I remember this game. The most exciting 10-3 game I ever saw, but nothing like the previous year's Orange Bowl: Penn State 15 Kansas 14, on a do-over 2-point conversion due to a Kansas penalty. I'll never forget that game. I wish the entire game was on CZcams, like this one. Thank you for the video.
At age 5 i got to watch this same time reduced film with a couple of the people who were on Penn st. I also watched the game live on TV. I started to remember around the 3rd interception. I came up with an offensive scheme that many coaches started using around this time, although Joe did not use it in this game .Being made from many eggs, i was known as Stewie the football head
The 1968 and 1969 teams were the ones that put Penn State among the big boys. From that time onward Penn State had national recognition, ranking, and playing in big bowl games. There were lots of really good players on the team that night. Harris and Ham went on to HOF NFL careers. But the guy that was the soul of that team was Mike Reid. He was one heck of a football player.
This game is how I became a Penn State football fan. Iknew nothing about college football, I was 12 and the Eagles stunk, year after year after year. I saw this and thought yes football could be fun to watch!
Lydell Mitchell and Franco Harris in the _same_ backfield? Wow. And John Cappellitti about to arrive? Penn State had a succession of running backs about as good as the fabled Southern California run.
68 Ohio State and 69 Texas were good teams 😳. Unfortunate was 73. In 73 Ohio State Michigan Penn State Notre Dame were all undefeated and Coaches gave title to Alabama based on regular season.Coaches finally caught up to Sportswriters in 74 and made decision after Bowls.Too bad another 40 years passed before Playoff introduced
Texas' gutsy long pass on 4th down and 2 that beat Arkansas in the famous 1 vs. 2 game was what persuaded the poll voters. When you try a gamble like that and it works, there's a feeling you should be rewarded. But the Nittany Lions certainly deserved a title somewhere in the mix of '68 through '74.
My first time to see Franco (Hated him in the NFL) and Lydell 🏆🏈👍💪✊👊 play colllegiate football Unfathomable we diwin't wm a title with such a backfield! #409Forever #IVP #weARE
Watching this game makes me sad at how the current college football playoff system ruined the bowl games AND college football. Back in the day, all four of the big bowl games mattered as did the teams that played in them. It was exciting because the way they played out, any of them could be the National Champion. Nowadays, you have only 2 or 3 teams with any chance to win it just about every year.
What TV STATION was this from? The staff announcer, when it went silent, telling everyone the audio quality was bad at the 12:10/36:22 mark sounded like RAY GOULDING of the Bob&Ray comedy team. I believe he was a staff announcer at one time. Is this a BOSTON NBC affiliate station?
Whose watching this in 2023 thinking about how they finna play each other in a NY6 bowl game to start off the 2024 season. IM A FAN OF BOTH MIZZOU AND PENN STATE
Yes, I believe this game was a contest to decide "Is it better to have your QB sacked every play, or throw an interception every play?" Sacks won out, narrowly.
@@chrisbath3956 Then Oklahoma ran those Lions out of the stadium everytime the two met. Never liked Paterno. ( We didn't spank them because as everyone found out later...they like that sh*t up there!!! ).
@@hermanator74301 yeah, because if one program has the right to run its mouth about morality, it's Chuck Fairbanks/Barry Switzer OU. What a bunch of crap.
9 turnovers out of the defense, and Charlie Pittman, Lydell Mitchell and Franco Harris on the field and Penn State still could only score 10 points. That really took some offensive coaching genius. :) But PSU won.
It's criminal that Mizzou didn't win that game. 9 turnovers, and Penn St. scored only 10 points. I can't believe how inaccurate McMillin was. During the season he was deadly. Waste of a great defense.
Penn State was lucky for the poor Missouri QB play with all the int's. Should have had a few more. PSU had poor line play on both sides...no discipline. Should have won by more but couldn't take advantage of those int's. Not JoPa's better efforts.

I was there!

Think Paterno had 8 undefeated seasons..??,..great coach

Charley Pittman was there first, what a freaking depth in the backfield.
Quite a defense by Penn state with Reid, Smear, Ham, Onkotz and Smith.
7 ints!
Penn State went undefeated in 1968 and in 1969 and didn't win a national title championship. The system should have been changed at that time

Pretty even game. Love seeing the old trapping run game so popular in the 70s. Football was played a lot closer to the line of scrimmage then.

Jeesum.....how many All Americans were on that team...?? LOTS of familiar names!! I like the pace of play....bet they got really tired... :*).
That Missouri offence couldn't get out of it's own way!
Penn State's first play from scrimmage a pass? In the shotgun formation no less!!! JoePa was ahead of his time.

Should have went to the Cotton Bowl and played Texas for the National Championship
Didn't have a choice.
Texas controlled the Cotton Bowl and wanted no part of Penn State. Knew it would have been an ass whopping. Still are cowards

Did the announcer really say the kick returner ran a 9.3 in the 100???🧐🧐🧐😂😂😂
Hmmm. 9.3 yards in 100 seconds? Most fans could do that -- even with a soft drink in one hand and nachos in the other!
9.3 in a hundred yard dash was how it was timed...that's fast

Did Franco Harris start running 🏃♂️out of bounds in NFL?
somewhat overexaggerated, I'll take the length of his career and results as a testimony that whatever he did worked.
Dan Devine had more success at Notre Dame
