      Tiafoe is a great player but today it was alcaraz who did very bad until the tie break, much worst than his usual.

      @@milanavujicic6854 Not true. Tiafoe ended with 39 winners to 30 unforced. For a 5 set match, that only 6 unforced per set! He did 10, 6, 4, 4 and 6. So he played at a great level. But he ran out of gas in the 5th. It is hard to maintain that intensity over 5 sets. It is just that Carlos started serving much better!

    Alcaraz is now 12-1 in fifth set deciders. What an absolute beast! He didn't play so well today but really stepped up his game at 6-6 in the 4th when it mattered.

    Carlos truly has the mind of a champion. Able to dig in when he needs to and close it out. Hopefully the match does well for his confidence!

Especially with Djokovic and Nadal, they often had to dig in to win... mainly because they were playing against each other, Fed and Murray. 2012 AO final comes to mind, as well as Djokovic's several comebacks against Fed (USO Fed's match point on serve, Wimbledon 2019)

    It rare for a young player of 21 years old to dig deep like Carlos ( so many Unforced errors in fourth set before tie break) Then in tie break, he win 5 point in a row with winners and forced Tiafoe to make errors. Win the tie break then fifth set with 6-2. But again HE IS three times GS winners.

      Yes, respect but WHEN is he going to pull through when it really matters - or will he always be a "Top 20" player - was really hoping he could be the next US star...that actually wins a grand slam. He has the game just not strong enough in the critical points. He had Carlos on the ropes and then blew it - again.

    He had me a nervous wreck, and I had my doubts. King of the tiebreakers and so tough at the end of any match. I should just always keep the faith he’s incredible.

      Top 5? Not even close. 13-14 losing for the year before this tournament. He’s barely above 50 percent winning percentage for his entire career, and only 3 small titles. He’ll never even reach was someone like Cam Norrie has accomplished. Thanks for the laugh though.

    It's onw thing to win by dominating, but Carlos was clearly off and yet figured a way to win. That tiebreaker and then the 5th set were pure clutch. Frances tested him again!

      @@pureffm No,I felt that too.. he looked flat or distracted. He didn’t play at his usual level till he got to the tie break. For instance Carlos played well against Draper at Queens yet he lost. That wasn’t the case today. I mean glad he managed to win, but wasn’t at his usual best!

      Word! my Brother in Law is from Baltimore. He doesn't play though unfortunately. BTW during Cam's live feed there's all the "clown this" and "clown that" which is thinly-veiled #racism. No "clown" goes up 2-1 with a tiebreak on Carlitos. I'm just bummed they had to meet so early, two of my favorites on tour. Also love Grigor and the Bublik Enemy. I respect Sinner but his game bores me.

But Carlos is not only a great tennisplayer but also a sportsman in every way. When Frances slipped on the court, Carlos helped him to get him up.     These are the games that champions dig their way out of in the earlier rounds. How many matches have we seen where the Big 3 survived early round scares and went on to win the entire thing? Alcaraz is cut from the same cloth.

    Carlos' clutch level is already rivaling Novak's. Feels like I haven't seen him lose a tiebreak or a fifth set in a long time, much like Novak last year (until he lost, wait for it, a fifth set to Alcaraz in last year's Wimbledon final).

      @@colethomas903 and that is why it went five in my opinion. i honestly believe Alcaraz could have won in 4 as many predicted. the good thing is round 4 is next week i think, (unless they decide to hold it on Sunday). so carlos has time to recover from a physically gruelling match and be ready. plus see what didn't work today (imo, his forehand...lots of errors)

    This really came down to experience. Tiafoe collapsed after that fourth set. Alcaraz has enough experience and stamina to win 5 sets. Tiafoe didn't. Should have closed it out in 4 but pressure got to him.

    Ugly win by Carlos. Today he was really off for 80% of the match...worst I have seen him play in a long time, but congrats to Tiafoe for standing up and upping his level for this match. Carlos is getting to a point similar to Novak and Rafa, just being clutch in the moments needed and upping the game the longer it gets, even if they are not having a good day on court. This is happening more and more to Carlos, which is great...if he gets his concentration at 100% for most of the matches and the duration of them, there will be only a slim chance of beating him.

      yes, but his tennis has to improve and it will. not just stroke specifics, but also overall quality and i am sure he will. he is pacing himself, but also gave a lot of points away today. its a process though
