Riffing with Modes part 1 (Ionian) found here: • Riffing With Modes #1:...
Dorian is capable of way more than just jazz and funk. This video teaches how to write riffs with the Dorian mode, and also how to arrange those riffs into a full song. We explore a little bit of modal interchange, by borrowing from the parallel minor key, but mostly focus in on the 2nd mode.
Don’t take me too seriously when I say that dad rock isn’t “too complicated or insightful”. I’m generalizing, for better or for worse.
FAQ:
Q: Why does your song sound like “Turn The Page”?
A: Because the chord progression for that song is the same- except it is in E dorian instead of D, and this song the chord changes every measure instead of every two. Also he sings the lyric "There I go", and I sing the lyric "There he goes"
Q: Why does your song sound like Metallica?
A: Because I’m trying to sound like James Hetfield
Q: Why does your song sound like Bon Jovi’s “Wanted: Dead or Alive”?
A: Because it’s played on an acoustic guitar, the tonal center is D, and I bend the minor third into that twangin territory.
Q: Why does your song sound like Bon Jovi’s “You Give Love A Bad Name”?
A: Because of that big major IV chord in the prechorus that resolves to the tonic. It’s heard in the prechorus of both songs.
Q: Why does your song remind me of “Norweigan Wood” by the Beatles?
A: Because the pick-strumma-strumma in 6/8 is similar to the pick-strumma-strumma in that song.

I guess I pissed off a lot of dads with this intro. In case you couldn't tell, I love this kind of music, so don't read too deeply into my taco-bell comment. As a dad would say, "quit crying about it"
OMG seriously? If you're triggered by this, loosen up your man bun.
Best to quote "Dad-rocker" Don Henley - "Get Over It". :-)
Hey Jake, quick question.
Why would you be counting the 6 8th notes as quarter notes? Would't that just make it 2 bars of 3/4?
Your Taco Bell comment was really accurate indeed
I am almost 50. I enjoy listening and learning from your channel. If any other “dads” get twisted about this they have the issues not you.
1: your hetfield actually sounded like hetfield to the point that my ear forgot it was an impression
2: you become a father when u raise a child, u become a dad when u appreciate dad puns and/or dad rock. if this applies to any women reading this, too bad you're a dad now. if you look under your bed there'll be a new pair of new balances
3: if this were on an album with "a truck is a man's best friend" i'd listen to the hell out of it tbh
4: good video as always, cheers mate
Jokes on you. The dad joke is projection and I dont take offense to what boils down to an innocuous job title.
After your Definition i am already a Dad (yes i love stupid puns i regret nothing)
Guy needs to put together an album with each song designed to piss off a different genre

This looks like a song about a gunslinger getting revenge in the wild west
I was actually thinking of The Gunslinger and the Man in Black from Stephen King's Dark Tower series. The original opening line was "In the cold of the morning, far north from here, the man wearing black moves along". But Man in the Mask Moves along has more alliteration and I thought that would be better to sing
@@SignalsMusicStudio Very evocative and haunting. Great choice in terms of atmosphere and setting mood. Your videos are always informative and understandable.
Thanks for doing what you do.

"I was actually thinking of The Gunslinger and the Man in Black from Stephen King's Dark Tower series." I KNEW IT!!!!! Man, those books are ingrained in my code at this point, I could sense that there a relation to the Tower in that song even though you just masked it! :p
@@SignalsMusicStudio The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed.

This definitely sounds like it came off of Load or Reload
Exactly what I thought!! There's a Mama Said vibe to it
Turn the Page too. He's fucking right it's quite a powerful scale
Which, ironically, is how you become a dad.
Theres a little hint in the intro that reminds me of Bleeding me.
Absolutely could have been on load or reload.
" well all the green things died when Ronnie came to this place..."
I like it that dad rock is now being used as an actual term instead of a slur

You kids and your dad rock. I listen to grandpa rock.
Of course like 10 years from now the dads will be people who grew up listening to emo and hip hop and EDM. Will Linkin Park one day be known as dad rock? Stay tuned to find out
I can't wait to practice my impression of your impression of James' impression of Bob Seger.
You gotta growl, "Yeeeaaahhhh" every so often for authenticity.
Dad rock, absolute chad genre. This also comes at just the right time as I'm trying to write a sea shanty in dorian at the moment.

How did it go? Im sure it would be very popular right about now.
99% of the time, the CZcamsrs that have taught me so many invaluable lessons, whenever they wright a song, I can't help but think "you might wanna stick to teaching".
This is not one of those times. Good work. Great riff.

This is the perfect video to go along with my midlife crisis guitar playing.
I’d say that it’s fairly accurate to say that mixolydian makes mom rock and dorian makes dad rock.

ebsen raptzski Friend I was exactly the same about 18 months ago. Every single thing I know about theory is from you tube and mainly from this guy. Really worth it I promise you just start at the beginning and take your own time .

Wait I can’t read music does that mean I’m not a “genuine” musician? Because I have like 2 albums of supposedly worthless music then.

Obviously not I cannot read a note of music. But understanding a little guitar theory really took my playing to another level and I really appreciate everything I have learnt from this guy. I am just a bedroom guitar player and probably do not have your talent, but can hand on heart say learning some basic theory has truly increased my enjoyment on our instrument.

Signals Music Studio Hi jake, could you analize the sax part in the song Going Home by the Dire Straits (Mark Knopfler) and why it sounds so astonishingly heart-orgasmic?

Jake, your videos are absolutely phenomenal. Everything is so well structured, organized, and polished. You are refreshingly articulate. Your lessons are complete, immediately understandable, practical, and always extremely entertaining, often laugh out loud funny. The joy and enthusiasm you radiate is contagious and inspiring. This is some of the best content I have seen on CZcams. I hope you never stop teaching because you are building an amazing legacy.

Dude...a dad here...I LOVED it!!! Continue to be blown away by your stuff.
I'm a dad and I didn't find this patronising at all. I think this is about one the best theory channels for guitarists out there. You're content is outstanding Jake, please keep it up.
I'm crying with laughter at your Hetfield impersonation 😂 It's almost spooky how close it is.
I’m a music theory professor and no, I would not fail you for saying you’re in the key if D Dorian.
The key (pun intended) is the composers intention. Odds are Bach and Mozart wouldn’t have thought in D Dorian, rather D minor, with the G being a V/VII (even that’s not right, but I’m still pre-coffee this morning), but for modern songwriting D Dorian is fine.
didn't get popular until the late 50's coffehouses,,,clove cigarettes, berets, and a stoner noodlin on a beat- up stella guitar..the dead took it to a whole new level.
Isn't D Dorian the key of C Major, but in a different mode? Lol
I'm under the impression that you can't refer to Dorian as a key--it's a mode. So that would make this song a modal progression.
Eh .. what about JS Bach's famous "Dorian" toccata?
@@katorzhnik Why not? Let music theory evolve. Minor is a mode of major, but we're allowed to say "minor key", but not "Dorian key"?? Maybe we shouldn't allow people to say "major key" because after all the major scale is just the seventh mode of the Dorian scale! Not fair to Dorian. No need to impose that arbitrary distinction. If you're in "A minor" but your tonic chord is a D minor chord, then let's call the key D Dorian, it makes more sense!
man, you're my favorite CZcams guitarist. All of your videos hold so much useful content and actual substance.. and then you go and throw in Toss a coin to your Witcher.

lol dont stress it, Im only 25 and I'm already like wtf is this trap bullshit? I just want to go back to the 60s-90s music
Happens to us all. I feel like 2005 was a high point in metal and a lot of this djent/prog stuff all sounds the same. But thats part of getting older, and some people will have their youth defined by trap and mumble rap and some people will think Machine Head/Lamb of God/etc. is just noise.
I discovered your channel I think about 2 weeks ago, and I have to say that I think you are one of THE BEST teachers of music theory on the entire internet! I love your videos. Succinct, to the point, but so accurate and full of great tips and information.
Thank you.

After Mom Jeans were reclaimed by the young uns it was only a short matter of time before Dad Rock's turn.
Listen to "The War On Drugs". They are the Platonic Ideal of younger peeps stealing Dad Rock and making it better.
I love how you break down songwriting to very elemental blocks. You are the best teacher for songwriting I have seen. Thank you for sharing your knowledge Jake!
This is amazing content. And the song is fantastic. I could listen to it for hours over and over. I've been watching your videos for awhile, and have always been impressed with your teaching style, but never realized how truly talented you are.
I've become a fan of yours. Your videos are filled with valuable information and watching you construct a piece of music is enlightening and inspirational. Often times I watch and rewatch the same video. Thanks for putting out such valuable content.
The way you are so familiar with all the elements to construct a piece of music and the way you manipulate them to create a very specific mood is so inspiring, you make it seem almost effortless (and I know it's not at all!)
This guy is a great teacher. Whew. Last time I played guitar was when a teen, but this guy makes me wanna pick it up again.
I feel like Dorian is one of the more versatile modes. This has a totally different vibe from the jazz and funk applications that you mentioned, but also from liturgical music I’ve heard that uses Dorian to create a regal, majestic energy. We Stan a mode with RANGE.
Unsurprisingly, yet another fantastic video. Song is awesome to boot. I look forward to writing and recording with the Dorian mode thanks to your incredibly easy to follow and awesome instruction. Thanks so much; your channel deserves immense growth. 👍🤘
First, you listen to this kind of music, then you find a girl who listens to this kind of music, and then you become a dad. Your dad did it it too.
You're the best guitar and music teacher I've watched... My goodness you are amazing
This is your best series by far, I sit at the edge of my seat every minute of the video with my notepad and guitar. Easily the most helpful videos and easiest to understand, when it comes to writing music and using different modes!
Great job Jake, I just love your humor.
I love seeing you implement the modes in non-traditional ways, like you were saying with Dorian usually being jazzy or funky. I hope you make a cool melodic song for Phrygian instead of the typical metal stuff you hear! Awesome video, and I hope the next one comes out sooner!!!!
This was seriously great. Idk why CZcams recommended a two year old video but it was just what I needed right now. I don’t even “like” the tone/timbre/quality of dad rock, at all, but it’s perfectly simplistic for an example & explanation of basic songwriting. Terrific execution dude, it sounded great.
This video is GOLD! Just what ive been working on and this is great structure! thanks man!!
Man I absoutley love this short song, it genuinely sounds incredible!
excellent Hetfield impression
Jake. I’ve only just come across your lessons in recent days. After playing guitar for 30 years on and off I’ve only ever learned songs I liked to play using tab and heaps of time, never really understanding why it sounds so good. I’ve learned more in 3 days than I have in 30 years thanks to you and more than that, getting excited because I’m beginning to understand music! The way you explain it has just clicked with me, thanks so much! This particular episode made me laugh a few times, the Taco Bell one lol. But the little clip you made was so funny overlaying Jame’s mouth...haha. The sample itself was great. If James ever gets laryngitis you might be getting a call 😜 If that fails I’m sure radio would take you on for sure. Keep up the great work 👍

A powerful piece of dad rock. You could have taken over the world with that sound if you were composing in the 70s.
so impressive.. man what a great video Jake. Just found your channel and it's full of amazing things, like a candy store for musicians.
So since I’ve been in quarantine I’ve picked up my guitar again and really enjoying your lessons I learned one of the parts of this song while watching you so that’s pretty cool. I sadly only have an acoustic but I can still rock out to dad rock on it great stuff jake!!
The idea of if you’re in dorian or aeolian mentioned at the end I think is funny considering that aeolian was originally just considered an altered version of dorian back in the medieval period with early Gregorian modes. So I’d say that the idea of using dorian with aeolian borrowed chords is more accurate to the original concept of the modes.
I didn't know that. I mean aeolian altered version of dorian. Very interesting, but with a lot of sense. Now I can explain myself why some songs using dorian it seems old, maybe even medieval to me, but never for aeolian.
