Also enjoying my S12. Nice review, did not expect it to a top recommendation 😄I read some people dont like the elevated highs.
Lots of planar releases this past few months, Moondrop also planning to release their own probably this late September or early October.
Been using my S12 ($141) for the better part of 2022 and mostly paired with a set of KZ AZ09 Pro's ($26 on deep discount). The AZ09 Pro's had to be modded to B-pin, a simple 3 minute process whereby I used a sharp razor/Exacto knife to shave away about 2-3mm of silicone rubber from the C-pin (QDC/KZ type) shroud, revealing the correct amount of pin length to make for a secure B-pin coupling. This mod is perfectly suitable for my S12, or Olina, or Lea, or T3+, or HZ Heart Mirror.
The S12 shines when the AZ09 Pro's are placed in power mode (3 successive clicks to the LEFT earhook button). Power mode consumes about 15% more power...still plenty of battery life for my use case (about 5.5~6 hours; normal mode is closer to 6.5+ hours). Frankly, the BTR5 & cables are still collecting a lot of dust, with these earhooks taking most of the daily use.
If you prefer wireless, the AZ09 Pro version deserves a serious look. Forget the AZ09 or the AZ10...just the AZ09 Pro. This one has the QCC3040 Qualcomm chipset...a must in terms of sound quality and connectivity. As the AZ09 Pro has plenty of codec support (to include AptX) I use it mostly in AptX with a FiiO BTA30Pro DAC in TX mode with Office PC as source.
If you need a more secure active fit for sports...consider the CCA BTX, which has the same technical specs but is designed for sports (sweat resistance, tighter fit over the ear).

Great review. These are incredible value and deliver a sound that is vivid, lifelike, but yes a bit of hotness on the treble. it is like turning up the color on a high-def TV set a bit, it is an enhanced sound. That accent can help create the perception of reality. Also, that treble quality thanks to the planar is near clear as a bell. So despite its v-shaped tuning, out of the box the signature is best suit to moderate listening of high-quality dynamic recordings. A bit of EQ reduction however, can help if you want to turn this up a bit and feel a bit more oomph. In this sense, I may prefer my Fiio FH5S as far as tuning. Also, the bass on the S12 is not a dead sound, it sounds incredible on plucked and electric basses, but won't have the bombast that a dynamic will have (FH5S beryllium driver is superb in this regard). However, that is all part of the experience, one that is pretty much top-flight. My past references are Utopia, HD800, LCD2, Etymotic and other sets. My current open-back reference is the HD660S, which is still vivid sounding but much smoother listening.
They also work incredibly well with spatial audio be it Apple Spatial audio, Waves NX (iOS / Android), nPlayer Plus (using DTS-X), Dolby Atmos for Headphones , etc. and will give a very holographic presentation, again with a bit of oversaturation in both the bass and high-end.
Really impressed with this set. The build, comfort and cable are superb. Redefines the baseline for both IEM/headphones.
I really dig the new S12 Pro just released. A smoother version of the S12. Especially in the ear gain region.

Thanks man! 👍 I always count on your opinion you helped me get the Galaxy T2 and it's almost 5 years old but decided to finally upgrade and heard great things about this. I wanted to spend around $200 on something special others recommended the one and only Blessing 2 but honestly didn't sound like my style. Hopefully in the future I can find something worth $200-$300 because with IEM's they are worth the investment.
Edit: I was also planning on getting the Tfz Secret Garden but I feel by now there are better IEM's compared to it.
I currently have the Tri Starseas. How would you compare the two? I know that the Starseas are a favourite of yours.

My favorite keeper is the TANGZU Zetian Wu Planar .......all I can say is that if you like the S12 the Tangzu will make you go WoW !!!!!!!

Hmm. This is cleaner, tighter, than kato. More analytical too. Kato, has more prominent vocal position, more open fuller vocal. Diff sounding tbh.

I upgraded from T3+ and Olina to the S12 in 1Q2022...definitely a noticeable upgrade. It has a planar wow factor.
Was thinking to try another planar for sh!ts and giggles...maybe the TANGZU Zetian Wu...but the design is a bit to flowery for my tastes. Like the S12's clean engineered design. As well, not sure I would be able to discern any sound quality improvement as the S12 is IMO that good.

@@unbiasOrbit The S12 is not shouty for me...but then I use aftermarket tips that suit me fine. I also use for PC: Equalizer APO / Peace / autoEQ or for phone: Poweramp Equalizer, when and as necessary. To me, the S12 is a more versatile IEM vs T3+...much better technicals and a very good default tune.
S12 is an upgrade.
That being said, the T3+ is a VG IEM. IMO.

If you don't mind more questions, do you need a dac/amp for the S12 to sound better? Cause I heard that it benefit from extra power and that it sounds noticeably "muddier" without it.
I'm considering to buy the S12, so I wanna know if buying a dongle is needed.. and if so, what types of dongle do i need to provide the S12 enough power to perform at its best?
@@unbiasOrbit S12 really shines with good power. At minimum, I go cabled and use a dongle DAC (Abigail, $12) on my GS10+ (SBC codec). For wireless, the KZ AZ09 Pro's ($30 ish) modded to B-pin and in Power Mode (3 clicks to left earhook button, reduces battery by 15% to about 5.5hrs use time; CODEC is AptX via BTA30Pro in TX mode; source PC). Else, cabled to either BTR5 (LDAC) or off of vintage receiver jack (Hitachi SR903 with BTA30Pro in DAC mode, source PC). My personal preference...wireless earhooks for day to day comfort/convenience. BTR5 setup for LDAC quality, source quality dependent.

at defense of Dioko, it is 30% cheaper than S12 v:
I’ve got both and the Dioko has the horrible 🤢midd bass suck out.
Now the S12, with Final Audio E tips , in my IEM’s stable is one of my favorites.
I’ve found it’s impressive and for the sub $200 category in the iem world it’s a unicorn 🦄
