- My order of BR Rinaldi axes has just come in from @emmanuel.belanger 's new shop @LaCognee in Quebec! I got the 600 g Milano (see Part 1) and the subject of this video: the 1100 g Rinaldi "America". This axe is different to the styles I am used to and it really punches above it's weight. I bought heads and sheaths and decided to make the handles myself. The "America" handle is made of Rock Elm ( Ulmus thomasii ) and I am chopping Trembling Aspen ( Populus tremuloides ) and Green Ash ( Fraxinus pennsylvanica ).

Baryonyx Knife Company carries Rinaldi in the US and has top-down silhouettes of some of the patterns, which is useful. You can see how much the Callabria has a fatter wedged cheeks than the America, for example. byxco.com/collections/rinaldi

You're really skilled at crafting those handles! It's a pleasure watching you work! Rinaldi America is really powerful for chopping. Also very practical for chopping logs on the ground.. I really like the Rinaldi steel, it's easy to sharpen and holds its edge well too.
Thanks and agreed!
Great stuff. I have two Rinaldi Trentos, 1300 and 500. Still want the 900. Shipping just crazy from Italy to here. Whats great about these axes is the fact that they are slipfit like the Basque. Thats handy because now you can make different length handles for one head.
11:23 man I never thought of it! Brilliant!
Thank you again Matt. I like that off set handle model that helps to balance the whole of the axe. I never thought too that those curvy handles could serve in that sense.
You are truly an axe savy!
I got the idea from @FortyTwoBlades
@@MattKeevilisn't that the Baryonyx channel? Good people to do business with, in my experience.
Nice work on that handle matt I'm a huge fan of rinaldi they are an amazing design
Same here, and thank!
Matt, thanks for another great video. I particularly liked how you utilized less than ideal material to your advantage. Best regards, Chris
Thanks!
Very professional video Matt. Great job on the handle. Impressive performance.
Thanks Brett!
Man I really liked the slip fit handle you made. Kind of reminds me of some homemade adze handles I've seen. Good to see you wearing a helmet. Safety is always on my mind and toes.
Thanks, gotta watch those toes! Re. the handle, as a maker of a homemade adze handle I will take that as a compliment.
@MattKeevil definitely a compliment. Adze handles are unique. I couldn't make one without copying
Great work Matt. Impressive as always. That profile is nuts. Knife on a stick essentially.
It is!
Always a great overall presentation!
You’re making those axes “trailers “ that I can’t make for now.
I surely learn a lot watching this one. I may add it to the Rinaldi America 302N4 page, if you agree!?
Agreed!
9:08 Damn close !
Not as bad as it looks! I've had this conversation with other CZcamsrs from the creator and viewer side and I think it's just something about some camera perspectives that tends to make safe placement look like close calls. In reality the axe went where I expected and my feet were in the position I intended.
Super enjoyed the vid !! Watched it twice so far 😂
Then I fell down the rabbit hole watching your Playlist you posted.
Love how you made the handle ! And the curves it has.
Excellent chopping also. The green ash would have been a great candidate for the Nouvelle Technique. With how Theud Bald puts in the initial splitting blows before the bucking blows.. Anyway. Just an idea.
Your Rinaldi American pattern REALLY appears to out chop my boys axe. Very impressive !
Thanks Glen! One thing Theud Bald suggested to me once is to try a heavy duty handle in a slip fit that I can crank sideways to pry pieces off. Might be a good use of the Ironwood I have and see how that works for buck-splitting
That a great idea ! I really like the length you made the handle! And I think Ironwood would work Great.
!!
Side comments.
Your sled looks the same as my big sled. I find that when full it's about all I want to pull. At times I will clip my wife's Jet Sled Jr. on and add 4 or 5 more cubic feet to my sledding out. But that's only for perfect trails.
Liked how you used a bow saw blade for a straight edge when tracing out the handle !
Again, thanks for the Great video !!
@@gumboot65 thanks Glen. Not sure if you saw the link but I just recently learned the bow saw blade ruler trick from East Coast Lumberjack
Is that a cracked handle on the HB Agdor ?
Fortunately no, just a bit of mineral stain (or something, I am not sure this falls under mineral stain) It’s a dark early wood band and in other handles I have it doesn’t seem to matter.
I wondered the same.
Nice vid! Good job on the handle, looks like a pretty cool axe. By your description the Calabria sounds pretty interesting too. 👍👍🪓
Thanks. Pretty sure the Calabrian is the one Ben Scott has
Yeah that Calabria pattern is nice too, I think to get some soon.
