Storyline:
Once again, the loyalties of the Cartwright clan are divided by the ongoing Civil War. Confederate sympathizer Judge Terry (Harry Townes) hopes to use the Cartwrights' influence to become the governor of Nevada. As a byproduct of this political finagling, Joe Cartwright falls in love with the Judge's daughter Morvath (Joyce Taylor), infuriating-and ultimately alienating-his brother Adam, who remains faithful to the Union Cause. Weaving throughout the proceedings is celebrated British secret agent Bill Stewart.

There was an episode of Bonanza a few years earlier where Pernell Roberts born of a New England mother and Michael Landon whose mother was Louisiana French got into when a southern sympathizer came to Virginia City to get the territory to commit to the new Confederacy. Now years later the issue is Nevada statehood.
The real life character of William Stewart played by Barry Kelley is in this episode. Stewart was in real life one of the big supporters of statehood, he was a Nevada silver king. His opposite is Harry Townes who is a southerner from Virginia who lost a son during the Civil War. His daughter Joyce Taylor is in love with Little Joe.
As in that other episode Roberts and Landon are at opposite ends. But when Lorne Greene sends Adam and Hoss on Ponderosa business away from the statehood convention, it's Greene and Landon who become delegates and the southerners are appealing to Landon in a variety of ways.
Alan Caillou is in The War Comes To Washoe as a touring British Shakespearean actor who in actuality is in the pay of Manchester textile interests who want the south to win the Civil War. He gets Townes interested in an alternate agenda should the convention not vote statehood.
In real life Nevada was admitted to the union in 1864 because Lincoln was very concerned that the silver mines of the Comstock Lode not fall into Confederate hands. Nevada territory did not even have the required population to be admitted when it was, but such niceties were forgotten during wartime.
As for The War Comes To Washoe, I have a bit of problem with the idea that the Ponderosa itself was entitled to two delegates to the Nevada Statehood convention. Were there that many hands on the spread?

@Joe Owens. Hi Joe. I agree with you. This episode does make me think of the Civil War and the former President Lincoln. Please read my comment in the main comments section of this video. Also, my late parents fought in WWII. I always found it interesting that my mother was full English and her dad came from England and my dad was full German and his dad came from Germany. My mother grew up in Boston, Massachusetts and my dad grew up in a small town in Wisconsin. My dad's dad only spoke German when he moved to America. He died in October 1958. I was only 1 year old then. My sister was 9 years old and she said that he only spoke German at home. Of course, England and Germany were on opposite sides of the war and that's why I find my parents's background so interesting. My mother became a college English teacher and my dad became an American college history Professor. Whenever someone gives false information about American history, I can usually spot it. What I put in my comment in the main comments section to this video does explain a lot about this story too. President Lincoln was a born again Christian which was obvious in his speeches. He didn't want a civil war. He tried to avoid it, but he was forced into it on April 12, 1861 when Southern soldiers fired on Fort Sumter, South Carolina. The Civil War had started then. Of course, he issued his Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863 which gave freedom to the slaves in the South. There was more that I wrote in my other comment. Adam Cartwright was always the voice of reason on this show with his brothers. A real intellect, brave, courageous guy with a lot of integrity. He was every bit right about what the South stood for, Joe was just blinded by his puppy love.
That's why he was little Joe.

I disagree. Not with everything but with what the South stood for. It’s a complex as todays issues. Transgender people want to start 3 and 4 year olds on hormone treatment. I want equality in the US, but I’m not for trangendering children who have no idea of their identity.

You see how Little Joe is staring Adam down! As if he's trying to intimidate Adam. He's been giving that piercing gaze the whole time they were in the barn...the whole time! But Adam don't seem to be phased in the least...😁😁😁😁 That's a cool cucumber right der.
And you never know if it was scripted that way, for him glaring at Adam, or was that really coming from him. There may have been some petty jealousy going on. And I do believe Adam was feeling the weight of that hostility. I found it mighty strange that Adam left the show, mid-stream. Though they said he wanted to do better roles, I don't think none of his roles, after, equaled to greatness, as when he played Adam. It very hard to work in a hostile environment, it's not a good work atmosphere. Anyhow, Michael Landon did unleash that genius in him, and went on to still be a great actor, in his other shows, but also a great producer, writer, and director. I thought he was the greatest. It's crazy, but when he died I thought for sure the world would be soon ending. But I know now that we're all just human beings, and it doesn't matter about one being greater, over another. We all have our individual road we walk down. We all should work, to have good hearts, because that's all God is looking at.
@@c.calliecoleman1531 Yea Adam left because, it wasn't 'character growth', he was used to theatre, and his contract stated he could not do a movie or work on other projects. So he said on one of the night time interviews. Ben, 'Lorne Green' gave Adam, Pernell Roberts, great advice, 'Stick with it and you will come out with a pile of money. Then you can hire Tennessee Williams to write a play for you.' Obviously 'Adam' did not listen to the sage advice.

I can't imagine being tied to a project you've come to literally hate - and he hated being on Bonanza,with their tight controls over his character development, or control over other projects he wanted to do - he just couldn't do them. Not really fair. What was he supposed to do during the time Bonanza wasn't filming, and was on hiatus - twiddle his thumbs ?!! He was too creative for that.
Oh yes, the beautiful, smart as a whip Adam, that used to melt all of the girls hearts. Too bad for Little Joe who was always lagging behind his older brother.
@@c.calliecoleman1531 Pernell wanted to leave so much the studio threatened to sue him for breaking his contract, I believe. As for the hostile environment, he'd contributed to a lot of that himself. He'd belittled Mike and his acting, badmouthed the show and sometimes did his job so badly it was noticeable on the screen. Obviously this created tensions. It was sad in a way. I always thought Pernell did feel excluded but that he didn't know what to do about it. He and Mike did make up in later life, however.
Is anybody else glad that the girl didn't die at the end like other Cartwright girl friends usually do? :)

LOL...guess she got lucky - she fell into the 'only had to leave town suddenly' category instead of 'dying of a sudden, deadly disease' or ' killed by outlaws, Indians', etc. as were the other 'methods of disposal' for 'Cartwright love interests' ! It was the running joke at the time the series was still on the air ! :)

Michael Landon made a humorous comment on the Tonight Show. He said, humorously, there was talk the the Cartwrights were gay. He said something like "None of use were, thankfully Hop Sing was".
Often it was a death sentence to love a Cartwright. PA had 3 wives, and more.

Historical fact represented accurately here. Britain did in fact support the south because of their desire for cheap cotton and they did try to run through the union blockade into Charleston South Carolina to support the rebels but failed.
So that's what Adam was talking about, British textile. Good, to know this.

Many of the northern working class in Britain stood with the Union. This was against their own interests too because their livelihoods depended on the cotton mills and easy access to cotton.
I love that the spy didn't even let his contact know he was a spy. Makes perfect sense, and I think that's the mark of a good writer. I do like action, but this episode shows you don't need gun and fistfights to tell a great, dramatic story.
I feel like this episode was great up until min 45 where it just abruptly ends....in other words, I wish they made it in two episodes.
Bonanza was mostly all gunfights, killing and Little oes weekly fistfights that got me seldom watching anymore. Little oe's absence from the series would have made it much better...he is so damn annoying.

Yes, watching this episode I thought the same. Now as it was in 1860-65, the differences that followed or supported mainstream division were varied. But obviously there were patterns, again now as it was back in history. As one might imagine, CW enlistment decisions for some were complicated. But for many they simply didn’t know any better and joined the nearest regiment because it was the thing to do. What I could never fully understand was how educated and trained military officers chose to serve the confederacy versus not serving to preserve the union of states. Today, many reason heavily on idealism being naive to the reality. This is because in America the public schools no longer teach history and civics from a curriculum.
Most were poor & just joined because it was their state.

Finally, something about the Civil War ! Bonanza is taking place from 1861 to 1868, and never the war is mention.
It was better than I have seen in the westerns where the main character is always a former Confederate officer and never Union officer or someone who just did not fight or was too old to.
There was another episode dealing with it too.

One of the very few episodes where location scenes were actually shot at INCLINE VILLAGE, LAKE TAHOE, NEVADA....5 years after this episode aired, the “Ponderosa Ranch” tourist attraction at Incline Village was opened to the public and remained a popular site for over thirty years....sadly, it has since been demolished

Adam Cartwright was the coolest character, I would love a grittier update of this show it would stream virally.
I would not main a reboot of Bonanza. They have tried with Bonanza movies and that prequel.
With the right actors and writers, I actually DO think a gritty/dark reboot of "Bonanza" would be GREAT. People would still be interested in the history of this country and the old West, if done in an exciting way. And the theme of a father and sons defending and protecting themselves, supporting each other as a family, I believe is always timeless.
To anyone who grew up with the show, or even watched it more recently in reruns, online, on DVD etc., you could NEVER replace the actors that played the original Cartwrights - and since they're, sadly, all dead now - the comment is moot.
Every girl Joe met was the most beautiful girl in the world and he loved her more than anyone else, seems there was a girl in almost every episode he fell for

Nevada acquired Statehood in October, 1864, more than 3 years after the outset of the Civil War (1861-1865). Despite a longstanding tale (taught in schools) about Nevada Silver, but the real reason was the 3 Nevada Delegates to help Lincoln get reelected.
Nevada became a state in late 1864,giving old Abe 3 more EV's.
I didn't see it of lil Joe being young myself but he was rebellious and suttlly disrespectful he needed to be at least popped now and then can you imaginge telling your parents what you ain't go do or do at any time I wish Candy had fit more in than just a hire hand and lil Joe was always hot headed getting in trouble on top

Some people, not sure who, have Bern instigating for that. I think we are too smart. If it went to violence, it would be our own military fragmenting then actung...and the UN. No one that is a responsible gun owner would care to fire on nin-violent gun hating young that would likely just go take cover and try to stay out of it. However, we do have bad gang and foreign terrorist cells here. That is a different subject. If those opened on citizens in a played way, the rest would be suddenly grateful to have defenders.

Amazing how this show is far far far better than any modern show. Although the ideology that the south was fighting for slavery when it was simply over federal government overreaching. Slaves were never truly freed anyhow. United States code title 42 section 1981 and read slaughter house cases.
You'd know that the south was not fighting against government overreach or northern aggression. As the law is and has been "for the freedom of all men". Slavery was a disgusting stain that the south fought to keep. As stated by all but 1 state in their secession statement and the constitution of the Confederacy. Let us also not forget, the south attacked first. Attacking and stealing from federal forts months before the war begin.

In a half hour, the bonanza shows gave us all a good moral show in 1 half hour than any other movie series since.
I've just been enjoying reading comments, to find so many ppl that love Bonanza as I do, and learn good things from watching it.
All the episodes - start to finish, of the series - were an hour long. But I agree on the 'good morals' part ! :)

To be accepted in Hollywood Michael Landon changed his name bc he was Jewish. The doctor in Little House on the Prairie said he did not make that much money bc ML made all the money. Owner of Facebook Zuckerberg when his IPO went public on Wall Street sold several shares bc he knew it wasn’t that good a deal. I talked to an investor that short sold FB and made lots of money. Eventually everyone can develop greed to a degree but sometimes it seems to be a natural thing for some people.

This show's wardrobe dept must have had a severe budgeting crisis - that blue dress has worn by every other female guest of the week!
That was why the main characters always wore the same clothes from Season 3 onwards.
Adam n Joe were always fighting because Joe was so hotheaded and always falling in love with every pretty face, Adam was such a no nonsense type of guy

Well sometimes , in 2 Bonanza episodes Hoss didn't trust nor believed Adam, in one episode Hoss befriended the lady whom gambled a lot, ( episode The Courtship, Helen Layton) and Hoss fell in love with her and was going to marry her and when Adam found out once Ben mentioned her to him Adam already knew who she was and that she was a compulsive gambler and Adam mentioned her gambling problems to Ben, Adam recognized her when she and Hoss pulled up in the buggy and of course she recognized him because Adam knew her and late husband, Ben told Hoss what Adam had said and Hoss got upset and didn't want to believe Adam until he and Joe had to show Hoss the truth by exposing her as she was gambling, plus in the episode She Walks In Beauty, Adam knew about Ragan's lifestyle in San Francisco once he recognized her while she was visiting with her sister Emilia at the Ponderosa and Adam recognized her and knew about her lifestyle and told Ben about her, Adam even confronted her at her sister's house and that's when she kissed him but he politely brushed her off, Hoss came upon them kissing when he stopped over to visit her and saw them but he was moreso trying to blame Adam and didn't believe what Adam had told Ben and when Adam returned home, Hoss confronted him and beat him up until finally at the party at the Ponderosa she actually revealed herself to him but to him it really didn't matter whatsoever but at least she did eventually in her own way tell him the truth so in my opinion Hoss didn't really totally trust nor believed Adam until the truth actually physically presented itself both times even though Adam was telling him the truth because he didn't want to see his brother hurt and married to the wrong type of woman.WHEW, so very sorry to be so long winded, Lol 😂, yeah but to me Hoss was always trusting towards Adam

a great example is a bonanza it was a great show on Tv, what we need more these days, like why is our country still divided in this country, like in this show we are still divided country because we do the same thing and repeat all of our faults again and again over time, different eras but same results we achieve the same all the time and thru time, we need one party in our country, A American Party u must belong to this party we cannot be divided anymore, we must be one people one country under god and be all patriots for this blessed nation we need a real bonanza of love with GOD it time to go back to him again make your life great again see u there. right next to u u do not see me I am here
I suspect I am on your side, yet...we need two main parties and a few in the wings. Even when not so infiltrated as now, the two options would allow the majority, what ever it is, to jump away from corruption that normally rears its head every 25 to 30 years. That is what it's designed for. A good plan, that was never meant to be turned into sports teams and cults of personality.
Also, both of the main parties are way too rich. You can kill em over graft or worse, but they will only reconstitute.
The old school Democrats ( not the first ones that were real racist, but later) were classical liberals, often fiscally conservative with family values and a extra measure of social conscience. The first members of the Rep party started with free slaves.

The Cimmunist lies about peaceful sharing actually mean lack and hardship. Only the top of it has priviledge and wealth. Opportunity for personal advancement and individual rights are marred by ther beliefs when put in place.
Even rhe head of China does not believe that a representative Democracy ( Republic) and Communism can co-exist.
So that is a burden like the burden of choice in this episode. Decide who you believe.
Even Libertarians are for more rights and freedoms. I hate to see the old Democrat party so abused, but have found that after years of looking at Republican leadership it has worked better. I don't like the old school Republicans that jockey to stay in power forever and want to push away any recently expansionist efforts by other more realistic Republicans..
Because like you, we beat this by suddenly changing what everyone thinks we are incapable of changing. And by fighting division and acting for all of our best interests, together.

The writers must have had a mindset like that, to have 3sons, with 3women. It could be why I kind of related, to them. Because my older brother dad was dead, and my 2older sister's dad was dead, and mine was alive, so from this show I never had a problem with us having dads, because we just loved each other, as full blooded brother n sister's.
Adam was this whole show, another excellent acting performance by my favorite actor...Pernell Roberts.

At this point in time, 1/2022 I'm proud and happy that American's have done a similar service to our Country and culture by standing up against would be attackers of our freedoms, standing for common sense logic, science, freedom of speech, and much more doing whatever is necessary to stand up for our future children. Joe here pays attention to his father's love, guidance and as always eventually loves his family, brothers, and his Ponderosa/home, especially at the sacrifice of his love, and potential marriage. Great script and interesting dialogue between ideologues pushing for violence to enslave an entire culture of peoples that have had enslavement pushed onto them by ignorance, greed, and abuse. As well the mention of the British commonwealth, is this an exposure of who was involved from Europe in our civil war? If so I'll have to do further research.

Guy Williams, Zorro, acted in five chapters with great success. He was hired to fill in for the announced absence of Pernell Roberts. But he, perhaps moved by jealousy of the immediate acceptance of the character played by Williams (he played a cousin of the Cartwright brothers) decided to stay another year in Bonanza. When Roberts left for good twelve months later, it was too late to bring the former Zorro back.

Only a handful of episodes feature shooting locations at the actual Ponderosa at Incline Village….this is one of those episodes..it was also the site of the now defunct Ponderosa Ranch Theme Park…went there many times in the early/mid 1990s..
The state of Nevada would not have helped the south enough to have made any difference.
Adam was the only one with sense either fight with Abraham Lincoln or fight with the south you can't run from war you have to practically picks side freedom or slavery i don't like Adam alot but he had sense

Love the writers of this show! They knew how to percolate love in the hearts of the Cartwright men and get those women on their way no matter how passionate they expressed love! Lol! Nasty little moral dilemma. The British decimated the Indian fabric industry, imported cloth made in the U.K. to India and made the Indians grow opium which they insisted the Chinese buy - they even had a war about it called The Opium Wars - right into the 20th Century there was a department of opium in the U.K. civil service and it wasn't to stop the trade it was to promote it. So this episode is definitely factually accurate. I'm British by the way.

i always placed Bonanza in the 1870s or 1880s..the pistols are Colt Peacemakers and everyone has Winchesters which i dont think were common or even invented in the ACW. Cap and ball pistols and carbines would be the type of weapons
