Storyline:
On behalf of his father Ben Cartwright, Hoss delivers a large sum of money to the town of Dutchman Flats. Upon his arrival, however, Hoss is arrested by Sheriff Stedman (Denver Pyle) on a charge of bank robbery. Stedman knows that Hoss is innocent, but he's anxious to prove his worth to the townspeople. Stedman's plan goes horribly awry when the angry citizens form a lynch mob.
Reviews:
"While Lorne Greene is waiting for $12,000.00 in cash at a land office being delivered by Dan Blocker, Hoss has been arrested by Sheriff Denver Pyle in a nearby town when he suspects the money could be part of loot from a recent bank robbery.
There's murder involved here also as banker Roy Roberts's son-in-law was killed and the only description they have is the robber was a big fellow, Easy to see why this would be hung on Dan Blocker.
Pyle is a man not up to the job and won't let Blocker go even after he thinks he just might be innocent. A lynch mob is brewing and stoking the fires there is the widow of the deceased, Olive Sturgess. It's a recipe for the tragedy that unfolds.
Kudos going out to Olive Sturgess for a great performance as the widow whose grief is the catalyst for the events unfolding." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com
"Here is another episode that involves one of the Cartwright boys being accused of a murder that he did not commit. This time the character is Hoss when he is arrest outside of a small town that recently had a bank robbery that involved the killing of Ed Wilson, a respected town person.
One of the local drunks is duped into fingering Hoss for the killing. And this sets off the townsfolk wanting a lynching instead of waiting for a trial.
The local sheriff, played by Denver Pyle, is not the most popular guy in town until the townsfolk believe he has captured Ed's murderer. The sheriff likes his new fame and refuses to send out a telegram that would prove Hoss's innocents. But soon he realizes that he can no longer control his town as they demand a lynching with or without any evidence.
This is again a very predictable and repeated episode. This is played out again and again during the entire series of 'Bonanza'. Without needing a spoiler we all know that the last five minutes will produce some action that could possibly save Hoss from hanging. Just way too predictable." Written by kfo9494 on IMDb.com

It's such a hot day but I think I'll still keep wearing my leather vest over my wooly shirt... ;)
Don't forget the hat. In one of the episodes, Little Joe was in the desert with no water in the blazing sun half dead yet he still had his green jacket on.
@Nica LOL....an old auntie of my late Mum said the same thing. She'd wear her fur coat on a hot day and swear she wasn't hot in there - despite the red face and dripping
sweat !!! :)
That's how tough those pioneers were. 😂😂😂
And the shirts up to the neck with a necktie...
Aleah York ... it might be hot but it sure looks more respectable than shorts and a singlet.
They should've organized a neck-stretching party for the crazy widow, lol.
You know it's going to be a good episode when the incomparable Denver Pyle rides into the frame.
Denver Pyle was just a great actor. Loved this episode.
The whole episode needs a sequel like "High Plains Drifter" where a gunfighter (really a ghost) returns to punish the town full of terrible people.
Hopefully the girl gets a long prison sentence.

Incredible how much trouble the Cartwrights get into in one hour.
I beg to differ with you. The Cartwrights didn't get into trouble nor look for trouble nor ever try to make trouble. It's because alot of the towns people were greedy, desperate , and willing to kill and rob. The Cartwrights were hardworking, honest, taxpaying law abiding men. So let's keep the story straight. Another of times it was a case of being at the right place but the wrong time. Cartwrights helped people. They didn't hurt people unless they were provoked.
And always carry so much money, so many times they talked about how money thay have on their person loudly. Sometimes I felt like they wanted everyone around them to know .😊 Don’t get me wrong.
I just noticed something I hadn't ever noticed before. A hithching rail the Sheiff paused in front of had cribbing on it, just like you'd expect wood to display where bored horses spend any time. Thumbs up to SOMEBODY on that set. A touch of realism where it's seldom seen.
"A touch of realism where it's seldom seen." You NEVER see any horse manure on the street, when there certainly would have been - so there's that, too ! :)
@@voiceofreason7856 plus the fact you never see more than 2 horses outside the saloon and then the guy walks in and its jammed to the rafters!....look at any western and see this
not a touch of realism....these sets have stood for many years some of them...its just natural they take on the look of it
Hoss also moves his cylinder over to a chambered round when the sheriff showed up, the first chamber is usually kept empty on a single action revolver due to a tendency to misfire. A lot of people might not notice these things, but the ones who do sure appreciate it.
A lot of realism is missing in these shows. The backdrop in the scene with Hoss and the sheriff is the same one that shown over and over again and what is supposed to be totally different locations. The triangle shaped mountain Peak is very recognizable. And then multiple shows throughout the seasons they use the same Virginia City street scene over and over again- the one with the Chinese man walking into the street with a basket of laundry! And they used a scene with Joe racing down the road on his Pinto and turning the same corner every time. There are numerous scenes like this that are reused in different episodes-like they think we don’t notice.
The people in this town are EXACTLY as most of my co-workers. Gee, what a people !
They should all go to jail., sheriff first.
And behind him that lazy good for nothing little coward liar.
Bonanza often had thought provoking things in their series. I loved stories since a little boy and no matter what the story, there is some little nugget that we may take away from it.
Sadly, this is an example of art imitating reality. This is what happens when people listen to an idiot and let emotions take over logic. People don't care who done the deed, they only care that SOMEONE is blamed and punished. They don't care about that part til it's too late.
Andrew Coble, that's why this is one of my favorite episodes with Dan Blocker at the center of it, even though he is mainly in a jail cell. It is accurate on how people react to certain situations. Lynchings did happen, and this episode, to me, depicted the buildup and the intent in a believable way. The music is also very good in here, I think. Especially in the scene where Hoss is wrongly ID'd as the killer.
Jim Dowell ... yes Jim and the heat added to the intensity of the situation. It's a well done episode.
Thank you Grjngo for uploading it.
@@SaffronJ7R you're right, the heat of the weather added to the heat of the situation. As the sheriff said of the townsmen "They're hot, and they're dry, and they're broke".
I agree
@@jimdowell9030ya but what they try to do was wrong no matter what hardships they are going through. That’s what’s wrong with the world. No accountability just excuses
The sheriff did not do his job well. He would have let an innocent man lynched. He should have sent the telegraph and verify with the banker how much money was stolen. There were so many things that was done wrong.
They all wanted to believe he did it. I believe the sheriff wanted to “save his job”
That damn sheriff was just stalling to keep from going to the telegraph office. I see that every single man in that town is a sorry poor excuse for a man.....Bunch of weaklings.
I mean they were instigated by the woman. She got no trouble for literally lying.

Isn't the sheriff the actor who played Uncle Jessie in The Dukes of Hazzard?!
Yes and Briscoe Darling from The Andy Griffith show
And Mad Jack from Grizzly Adams!
Yes. That was Denver Pyle.
Yes
He was the Baldwin sisters cousin Homer Lee of Buckingham County, he took all their recipe and stole John Waltons truck too.
That Karen was so annoying
A man has to stand for something or he will fall for anything. Dont hesitate to stand tall with dignity and dedication in what you know is right .
The Shierf lost his way when he didn't send the telegraph to find out the truth. The town wimp knew he was wrong but he saw his chance to win the hearts 💕 💞 of the town folks so he sold his soul for the moment. The grieving Widow lost her mind and wanted anybody to pay the price in which her father did by her hands. Shows that desperation can turn the hearts and minds of good people into evil and money is the root of all evil as well as a bitter heart
The Sheriff is Briscoe Darling from the Andy Griffith show! What a funny guy! I still laugh myself silly watching those old episodes when he and his family would come to town.
His real name is Denver Pyle. He died several years ago. He was a great actor!!
I loveed when the Darlings were part of an episode of Andy Griffith! And Ernest T. Bass! 🤣🤣
And the banker in this episode also plays Mr. Jackson who takes Andy to court after Andy makes him come all the way back to Mayberry to pay a speeding ticket. I love watching old shows and seeing actors who were also in Andy Griffith! Some actors were in an episode of just about everything lol!
Fun absolute fact:
Denver fuckin Pyle was one of the best actors ever. Every role he played was sincere and realistic. Underrated thespian
Denver Pyle was one hell of an actor, its no wonder he was a Guest star in many Bonanza episodes. 👍
thats right. i like the way he acted in every episode, cool, professional, a perfect actor.
Pyle also guest starred in many episodes of #GUNSMOKE!
He's so young here, I didn't even recognize him! I only knew him as uncle Jesse from "Dukes of Hazzard". Lol
Superb beginning: tense, a scorching day. The achromatic strings in the soundtrack also lends a sense of doom.
Hoss is not resisting enough.
Is that uncle Jesse from dukes of hazard?
That loud mouth ass woman got on my got dam nerves! Good episode nonetheless. 👍🏿
Same. I wish Adam had been there to sort her out
She wasn't very ladylike that's for sure..😞

It seems like if you are so grief-stricken about your husband being killed, you above everyone should want the RIGHT man punished. She just seems to want SOMEONE punished.
Too bad her attitude doesn’t match her look.
I love denver Pyle, such a great actor
This has to be the worst town they ever visited. Where an innocent man could get killed by otherwise lawful people.
Always l9ve Denver Pyle.......he is in it a lot😍😍😍😍😍
Whole town is worse than the bank robbers
That loud mouth woman was getting on my nerves in this episode. Also, Denver Pyle is a great actor.

Nothing more worse in the world than money and a special type of women. Thanks for uploading and sharing this old series.
Best regards luck and health.
That's true.
Couldn't help but notice that annoying little character named Shukie, played by Terry Becker. He'd become better known to many of us as Chief Sharkey from Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.
Cartwright could never go to any town without getting falsely accused of murder. It was always on the flimsiest evidence to him.
Sheriff “The bank teller was killed last night and the bank robbed.
Cartwright “I’m just in town on business”
Sheriff “ that’s enough evidence for me, we hang you at dawn”
To be fair, it's the Wild West where in the real world search and seizure and due process procedures left A LOT to be desired.
Writer's were getting lazy with Bonanza at this point. Another Cartwright getting blamed for a bank robbery he didn't commit because he was carrying a large amount of money that belonged o him with stupid or crooked gossiping sheriff and townspeople ignoring their innocence.
Ya because that kind of thing never happens 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
The Cartwrights need to stay on the Ponderosa.
Denver Pyle
Professional, kind...
Good man
In other episodes they say "who hasn't heard of the Cartwright's?" I guess a whole town of people apparently!😮
Great.
