A day after arriving in Kathmandu, Nepal, I set off towards the place they call Thamel. A tourist spot filled with agencies and shops selling paintings, trekking material, cameras, and religious ornaments. Most of the people I saw walking on the streets were foreigners, and I was constantly approached by over-friendly strangers who wanted to lure me in their shops.
I found a restaurant called Jatra around Thamel and tried choila छोयला, a special newari dish consisting of buffalo meat in a spicy sauce, for the first time.

I have to treat the salesmen like i basically have to treat homeless people in America. If you say much to them or acknowledge them much, they will follow you forever. Might as well keep it short and have a quick excuse ready to deploy if not wanting to just repeatedly say “No” which is a bit harsher than a quick excuse, but they ask for it.

Most of the Nepalese people understand Hindi as Bollywood moves are very popular in Nepal but they might not be able to reply back too well. Most of the people you met on your blog - the vendors, the sadhu, the pani puri guy, even the pani puri you had in the streets of ktm are all from India !! Most of the Indian food restaurants, street food etc are owned by people from different parts of India… that’s why you can get around speaking Hindi !!

Those first guys operating the rickshaw always charge insane prices. Been twice and the price was ridiculous. This guy in your video asked for 1,000 for 2km. Taxi would cost 200 for a tourist, 150 or less for a local. My Nepali friends could taxi from near the airport to Thamel for under 200 rupees. That was in 2017.

Taxi's are expensive even for the locals. 300 rs. is the lowest fare I have paid till now that too after bargaining. Maybe u are talking about pathao or sth.because those charge comparatively reasonal prices.

”Choila” … “Sadeko” - stay away from these if you are not into spices!! These are typical snack items - made to be enjoyed with Beer or any alcoholic beverage … the sauce is made with raw minced garlic, ginger, green chili, red chili, raw onion, coriander, mustard oil - etc … !! Definitely not a breakfast or lunch item !!
