$250 Heritage Hotel in Kathmandu, Nepal 🇳🇵

  • My first ever visit to Nepal. I decided to ease myself into Kathmandu by staying just outside the tourist area, in a luxury heritage hotel.
I stayed for two nights at Baber Mahal Vilas, which was built and is run by the descendants of Maharaja Chandra Shumsher Rana, Nepal's longest serving prime minister.
From my research, it should cost a maximum of 500 rupees ($4 USD) to get to the hotel from Kathmandu airport, by taxi. So imagine my shock when the pre-paid taxi counters were asking me for amounts between 1,500 - 2,000.
I decided to just walk outside the gates of Kathmandu Airport, as I've done in many countries, and try my luck with the taxis on the street. The first one that I flagged down agreed to 500 straight away, without any negotiation.
I had a little bit of trouble finding the hotel as the location on Google Maps was wrong. I've been in that situation many times before. Thankfully local SIM cards are available and cheap at KTM airport arrivals, so I was able to call the hotel from my phone and hand it to the driver for them to communicate. That never fails.
The SIM card provided 28 GB of data for 28 days with a bunch of calling minutes included for only $10. Instant activation as well. A much better experience compared to Pakistan where there were no SIM cards available at the airport and it took 48 hours for activation once I found a shop that could sell SIM cards to foreigners.
I was warmly greeted at Baber Mahal Vilas and given a tour of the complex and hotel by Prabin.
The Baber Mahal complex is a few dozen fancy shops, bakery and restaurants. The hotel started off as the residence of the owner which was converted into a hotel in 2015 and is currently being expanded in size. The complex and hotel are built from an area that was originally the horse stables and cow sheds for the palace.
I was given an upgrade to the highest category of room because the room I booked was right next to the noisy construction. Regardless, the construction noise could be heard from anywhere in the hotel, just at different decibel levels. I wouldn't have booked the hotel if I knew it was under such heavy construction but I was able to put up with it and it at least stopped at 6 p.m. each night, so it was possible to relax in the evening.
For a small-ish boutique hotel they have a lot of facilities such as gym, swimming pool and spa that you wouldn't expect of a hotel that size.
As I had an overnight flight to get to Nepal, a nice swim in the pool was welcome refreshment.
After getting settled in to the hotel I went on a momo hunt. Momos are bite-sized dumplings that are normally steamed. The are famous food around this part of the world.
It didn't take long for me to find an inviting-looking momo shop. Just up the road from my hotel was Durbar Momos. 'Durbar' means royal. This shop had momos with different stuffings such as veg, chicken, buffalo, banana and paneer.
I ordered Fried Buffalo Momos and Special Chicken Momos.
The fried buffalo momos were small and crispy, with a taste of Scotch Pie. The special momos, in their own 'Durbar' style, were steamed chicken momos covered in cheese, salsa and jalepenos. Those were my favourite. It was like eating a combination of momo and loaded nachos.

Never been to Nepal, but the Nepalese I have met in UK are all very genuine and respectful people. Most Nepalese I have met in UK have had family members who have been Gurkhas, so there is a rich mutual history there. Kathmandu is definitely on my bucket list.

Enjoy your stay in Nepal, it is a great place, I am in love with the taste of the water in Nepal. Nepal has some unique architecture (such as the pagodas and temples), the country flag is not the only unique factor. From world hardest cheese (churpi) to the most expensive fungi (yarshagumba) is found and consumed in this country. I recommend paragliding at Pokhara as it one of the world top 3 places and it one of the thing I definitely want to do again, for flora and fauna I mean word can't describe it (it literally known as the Amazon of Asia) , 9% of all the bird species in the planet can be found in Nepal at given time bird far north from Serbia to south from Australia, I get that many people are not into animals but in food wise Nepal has it own unique varieties of food for it many ethnic groups (also considering the connection of silk road and spice road from it neighbours. Many may describe the Nepalese food as primitive as it really focused on energy factor (not to spicy like indian food (like over 11 spices which I doubt many can even differentiate), Nepal also has it own unique spices such as Timur, in Nepal you could technically become vegetarian or even vegan if it suits your diet but again I don't want you to miss some special meat dishes. Lastly Nepal is a go to destination for many indian and Chinese people (it not to expensive, and a Korean show rated Nepal with very high rating compared to Paris, Thailand, Korea, Hawai etc. As it has many thing to offer. I don't recommend staying completely at Kathmandu because yes you have Hanuman dhoka, swambunath, or even other area but Pokhara , Chitwan and other areas are equally beautiful. Like I said Nepal has alot to offer and definitely try visiting Pokhara and my favourite sunrise has to be at the world peace stupa. It magical and I have been in many countries sunrise in beach or in mountain nothing can beat the sunrise in the highest elevation, my personal pick is in Pokhara (world peace stupa I think that what it is called) definitely worth it

How is water good in Nepal

    • @pranavr9783
      @pranavr9783 Před 2 lety +5

@@Roji.1979 it tastes good, it my personal preference, I live in Australia and the water taste different from different area with in the state where I live. Like if you go to rural areas like Dubbo or something you can clearly see difference as I prefer the water in sydney. Your taste buds will definitely get custom to it, it like when judging wine, sure they may have same grapes with same sugar/ acid content and so on but the distillation process may be different or the factor of the region where grape is produced such as costal and highland. Which contribute to the quality of the wine. In another word try the desalination water in America or from costal areas with in the world ( where they get water from sea) to the water in Nepal or glacier area. Keep in mind you have to clean/ boil the water in Kathmandu ( as people that are foreign to the region don't have the stomach imunity against the organism in the water, for example in Hati sufferd a natural disaster, Nepalese went to Hati to help, and they created more death than the natural disaster by introducing disease from water ( they basically flushed there waste into the water source). It just like Spanish with introduction to chicken pox that affected the Aztec and the incas. But again finishing my point water in Nepal taste amazing and this is my personal opinion. You do have to boil it or what ever cleaning process you have to do. The water of Nepal is probably the thing I miss the most 😅 it may just be the deadly diseases that may lived in the water but when you try one water in a specific day and next day you try another I guess traveler will know the difference. To answer shortly just travel and you will know.

I love that he's creating such entertainment over the little things. Reviewing the chairs, getting a tour of the hotel, testing out the bed, going to the supermarket, reviewing the supermarket items. It's not boring too, very engaging. It's kind of brilliant when you realise this could all easily be ignored. It's good to stop and appreciate these things.
