Great video for what looks to be a tough job (I'll have to tackle it myself soon)..... but the love you show for your son is heartwarming. Boys that grow up with a dad who loves them, and shows them how to do stuff, will have such a terrific head start in life..... it's great to see! Matthew is a fortunate little guy, and you're a fortunate dad. Wishing you many happy years of wrenching together - It gets even better as they get older! I have 2 sons (aged 27 and 25) and 2 sons in law to be (aged 23 and 21). I love working on vehicles with all of them.
Couple things I learned doing this job the last 3 times. Don't use the O-rings that come with your kit, even if they look to be good quality. Buy the Motorcraft O-rings from the dealership. Mine were around $16 for all 4. Do you really want to do this job twice over saving $16? Putting the Up-pipe Y/ Turbo clamp on: I torqued both up pipes to the collector and left the exhaust manifold-up pipe bolts very loose on both sides. I then wrapped a ratchet strap around the driver side up pipe and ran the strap up and over the turbo near the wastegate (leave enough room to place the clamp around) and hooked the other end to the tire changing tools. The ratchet strap will hold the Y collector firm in place against the turbo while you put the clamp on with both hands. Also before removing the exhaust manifold bolts: first spray them with WD-40 the day-week prior. DO NOT BLINDLY USE A 10MM & 13MM! You can strip the bolts and have to cut them off. (Some don't have the tools to cut them) Try using a 3/8 wrench for the top and 1/2 socket for the bottom first, I found they fit much more snug. (This is assuming your bolts aren't completely rusted out) Hope this helps and makes things go smoother for somebody.
I did the same up pipe mod from Riffraff about 3 months ago. I also wrapped my up pipes to keep some of the heat in and dump thru turbo. I had to leave the 4 bolts on top collector a little loose plus the bottom bolts to align the turbo and collector guide pin. you should have done EBV delete because once this is together you are not gonna want to do it again. change the pedestal also. Good luck.

it is possible to get all 4 bolts out of the collector from the top side. I did it! Of course you need to soak the bolts down just as you suggested. Build you a bed on top of the 7.3 to get every inch you can get. The two visible bolts to the collector were easy enough after 2 days of soaking. The 2 you cannot see--- you can feel. With a 10mm combo ratchet you can patiently get these bolt out from the top. Make it easy on yourself, I did!

Haven't had any problems with Dorman up pipes yet, my F-250 has had a set for 80K miles, and my dually has a set that has about 10K on them. I've done this project enough that if I have any problems it is a easy repair.
Just a bit of thought! The fuel line you have connected the fuel rail on the driver side is in your way as you remove and insert the "exhaust collector" Y or splitter , which ever you prefer, bolts at the top of your up pipes! Still, overall, you did a good review of what can be very useful for other 7.3 lovers! I like you!

Just did my up pipes today and same thing happened to me but it was my passenger side 😂😂, and it was also a pain to take the bolts on that one off 🤷🏻♂️, rebuilding my turbo tomorrow and getting the billet wheel in it along with the turbine wheel and a few other goodies
@@elis51501 If I remember correctly I didn't hear a rattle. It sounded like the turbo was boosting quite loud, and I used to get a lot of looks. The easiest way to check for a leak is to look for soot on the firewall and actually get your hands on the up pipes to check for any free movement.

After having done this job myself I'm wondering if it would be easier to install the Y-pipe on the turbo first loosely clamping it in place then installing the up-pipes.I had a real difficult time aligning the white pipe with the turbo alignment pin. Next time I do the job I'm gonna try it this way
@@FixItNick I went with the Dorman pipes, but yeah, not an easy job for lining everything up. I mocked it all up, then tightened. After a week, it started to leak at the collector, clamp seemed to loosen up. I am pretty sure I need to replace it. But now I am just looking into doing the Banks larger turbo set up...that way it is worth my time and effort....

I then wrapped a ratchet strap around the up pipes/collector, ran the strap up and over the turbo and hooked the other end to the tire changing tools. The ratchet strap held the Y collector firm in place against the turbo while I put the clamp on. Literally had it done in 5 minutes. I watched just about every video and saw every writeup on this topic and was dreading the Y-Collector/Turbo clamp, if anyone else is about to do this job...use a ratchet strap around the Y! Also when removing the exhaust manifold bolts, first spray them with WD-40 the day prior. DO NOT USE A 10MM & 13MM! You will strip the bolts and have to cut them off like almost every other person who's made these videos! I almost made the mistake myself going off a very popular writeup on how to do this. The correct size is a 3/8 wrench for the top and 1/2 socket for the bottom. Hope this helps and makes things go smoother for somebody.
@a98ctr62 this s**t is so aggravating... I have a ratchet strap around up pipe/y collector, I have everything loosened (exhaust manifold, Turbo from pedastal) and it refuses to come together. Really getting fed up with this s**t.
So I bought a 2001 ford f350 that needs new up pipes, and new oil pan. I wish I could hire you to fix it all. I love the truck and use it just for a work truck but its spendy to replace these things.

Take that fuel line clamp off of the passenger line connected to the block while you're in there freely. They will rub together and make a hole in the line causing a major fuel leak. "Look up 7.3 passenger fuel line leak"
I'm envious of your nuts and bolts coming off. Mine are almost non existent at the header, and welded solid with rusty cake. Gotta love sand and salt in the winter.
No! Your truck can be completely stock. If your Turbo isn't whistling at all and all your IC clamps/boots are tight, guarantee it's this. I've been searching for this bugaboo for 2 years now, I just found it.

We all struggling knowing that for most engine work ford pulls the cab. Not looking forward to these. Just pulled my turbo today and the up pipe vband was a two hour disconnect.

Are the aftermarket up pipes worth the extra $$$ with shipping those up pipes are around 500$ than while you have everything off you may as well rebuild the turbo and install a non EBPV pedestal and a new turbo outlet housing. Before you know it you spent 1k in time parts and tools.
Do you think is possible to put the up pipe y on turbo first set turbo on pedestal then install both up pipes after I cant seem to put back clamp on so I'm thinking of putting the up pipe y on then put up pipes from header up to y . I'm going to try
@@FixItNick got them on back clamp of turbo I modified it put a longer screw t screw I guess and made that metal thing looks like a tube made it shorter worked like a charm reached and grabbed it easily might need to patten.it call it the clamp you don't half to cuss out
Dang I'm pretty sure this job is way more horrible worse if you have a ZF6 or maybe 2 wheel drive ZF6 I just don't have anywhere near the room in some places , just a fun 7.3 discussion starter ...

Couple things I learned doing this job the last 3 times.

That's on the 6.4 Powerstroke they pull cab, not on the 7.3.

No didn’t have codes or anything. I use this reader amzn.to/3oF8KeZ and OBD Fusion App on my 7.3, haven’t found anything else to work

It’s kinda a pain yes, up ups have to go nun first then turbo, it will be much harder if not impossible after turbo is installed

Looked wet around the clamp on the passenger side head. Could be oil or something else. It just looked wet in the video.
