A time when society had a sense of humour. Songs of humour about every Race abounded, and no-one took offence. Love it. Our true Indigenous people are real characters and respected.
I am now 71 years and still love this song. And I still have the little 45 record. Bless your soul Charlie. I still hope that boomerang comes back to you one day.
I'm 76, and this record was among those I got for Christmas with our first Dansette record player that replaced dad's huge sideboard of a wireless. I still have the record along with the others, but this is the only one I play. Thank goodness for Charlie Drake. We're not even allowed to laugh at ourselves any more, but who cares 😂

I first went to Australia in '86....the year Halley's comet returned, which was poorly visible from the northern hemisphere....and when climbing Ayers Rock was still permissable. Viewing it there wasn't much better, but since it comes around only once every 76 years, you take what you can get! Many years later, I met and married an Aussie woman, and we have now been to AU together four times. Although, at age 86, she certainly doesn't need to work, but, as I pen this, is at work right now. A local summer camp for young chidren, 'Plantation'...she is the chief 'Garden Designer' and has been for ever since I first met her 18 years ago. The Aboriginals have 'reclaimed the rock' with climbing no longer being permitted.....but is still an incredible sight to behold. BHE

Same here. One day we were listening to it and I think it was the first time actually paid attention to it. So when the punchline came, he actually laughed out loud. It was the only time I'd heard him bark out like that, and that makes it a great memory.

The original Heineken advert was brilliant, they built it up in every advert break through the evening, with Charlie throwing a boomerang in each one, and in the final one, he had a drink of Heineken, and all of the boomerangs came back at the same time. Best advert ever imho. 👍
I don't know why but this just came into my head and thinking of Charlie Drake. I saw him at a theater in Wolverhampton as a kid back in the 60,s. Just had to listen to him again. Not disappointed. I think it was a double bill with Arthur Haynes. Two fantastic comedians.

I grew up in Cook, in the middle of the Nullarbor. The black fellas out there loved this! They thought it was bloody hilarious! It was an insult...a friendly bit of banter. Said with affection. If an Aussie doesn't insult you in jest, then he truly doesn't like you. Thats OUR culture - and its what gave us our famous easy going nature. Sadly, my culture is dying out in this woke world these days.
My dad had the 45 amongst other albums 45s between Elvis, Fats Domino, Buddy Holly, etc. He had different kinds of music back in the day when I was a kid 30 plus years ago and whenever he was in a fun music mood this song would be one of them he would play and he would do funny dance moves and facial expressions with it. Good times. :)

I threw it and threw it but it just kept doing a nosedive into the ground. I finally lost interest and gave it to a friend. Ah the wonders of living in a right handed world with no instructions. It wasn't until years later that I figured out why the damn thing didn't work for me.

I’m from Penang, Malaysia. During 70’s and 80’s I used to listen to RAAF Radio Station in Butterworth. They used to play these song very frequent, after checking the squadrons history, they came from Darwin, Northern Territory, perhaps the servicemen and women getting homesick I guess!
I suppose that "the ABC" is probably something like the Australian Broadcasting Company, not the American Broadcasting Company, of the United States of America. I think that this ABC, is now part of The Walt Disney Company. Walt Disney might have been Humanist, not Christian, but you might have heard of Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse.
You're right. The ABC I referred to which banned that song was the government owned Australian Broadcasting Commission. Maybe Walt Disney had something to do with setting up the Australian Parliament!!!!! (There are a few Goofeys in there!)

I used to love this song when I was a kid. When it was written, it was never meant to be 'racist', it was just meant to be a bit of fun. To be 'racist' requires some intention to be racist, to wish harm on the other 'race' - for example the Klu Klux Klan. One should not view this song with biased twenty-first century PC glasses.

I think that this ABC, is now part of The Walt Disney Company. Walt Disney might have been Humanist, not Christian, but you might have heard of Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse.
You're right. The ABC I referred to which banned that song was the government owned Australian Broadcasting Commission. Maybe Walt Disney had something to do with setting up the Australian Parliament!!!!! (There are a few Goofeys in there!)
All the ABC, like all broadcasters, cares about is money, never mind that this record is nearly 60 years old. If there is the slightest possibility of offending someone with a fat wallet that the ABC is financially benefiting by -however that might be- then it's got to go!

I used to love this song when I was a kid. When it was written, it was never meant to be 'racist', it was just meant to be a bit of fun. To be 'racist' requires some intention to be racist, to wish harm on the other 'race' - for example the Klu Klux Klan. One should not view this song with biased twenty-first century PC glasses.

This was a great fun sixties track and meant no offence to anyone . Anyone who takes offence is a bit sad and over-sensitive ..possibly looking for things to be offended by! I bought it when i was about 11 and this has brought back fun memories. I think i will learn the lyrics and perform it !
