    I have found the tonal difference with the smile/open soft pallet Before on some of my better days vocally.. but Couldn’t put my finger on how to accomplish it all the time. Your analogies are great and I’m working with just performing the muscular actions with breath but no tone to create a new healthy habit

    What you did at 3:46. Lits the soft palate and make the sound much resonant and brighter by bringing up the hand. You can get the same results with putting your hand in front of you and facing you, and bringing toward you. If you push the hand away from you, the sound is less resonant and clear.

    I was taught this and the hack that worked for me, is imagining that my crush is right beside me and I have to keep a straight face and not be obvious. 😅

    The ear one is awesome thank you! Also good to know that the singer smile is mostly a soft pallete thing and not some other secret sauce lol. I would always try to do like a regular smile and it messed up my embouchure i think

    Arden? Last night, I suddenly remembered your hack. You had said to imagine seeing our twins, and smiling, during your appoggio bootcamp a year ago. You had also said to imagine a Christmas tree coming out of our backs, and leaning into the lowest part in one continuous fluid motion. For me, it works to imagine a pyramid, and as long as you keep moving down that pyramid without stopping, even for a split second, so, too, does the air keep flowing. Last night, I imagined an upside down pyramid, on top of the pyramid of support. Point to point. The upside down pyramid was inside my mouth. I lost any and all jaw tension. You said a couple of days ago to PAY ATTENTION, and really be in your body when you sing. I didn't even realize how much jaw tension I had! I think that it is because I have the temporomandibular joint thing, where it can become locked in an open position. Granted, this hasn't happened in years, but my body remembers what that feels like. It hurts. Oh. My doctor thinks that I have fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is akin to phantom limb pain, where your toe can itch after you have had your leg amputated. But, this inverted pyramid image REALLY worked for me! It may work for someone else as well! I felt my soft palate stretch, and my throat open right up! For me, you keep this open idea going BY moving down the pyramid of support in one fluid motion. I am practicing again, and I am realizing that the inverted pyramid keeps getting bigger and bigger, and keeps going further and further out the back of my head. Its a counterbalance or butterfly that gets bigger at the exact same rate that you go down the pyramid of support. And, if you imagine the whole front and sides of your face from your cheekbones up as one giant room with echo, it works! You don't have to speed up the velocity of air to get through. Just, let it happen. You are RIGHT, Arden! The body knows how to make a supported, resonant, effortless sound! It's just a question of getting out of your own way! THANK YOU for everything that you do for us! And, I will say it again. You really sound amazing! Your voice is lovely! Take care. Love, Susan

    I like your imagery - it looks like you increase your internal space without having odd unatural outward contortions. When I do it that I notice an instant shift while the outward contortions just tense me up
    I do however find it easier with higher notes than lower ones - what’s the insight about this
    What a phenomenal voice and ability you have!!!!

    My soft pallet moves on its own while listening to music and I can match peoples frequencies and tones. It's kind of cool but it gets annoying after a while if I tend to focus on it. I even feel it moving if I hear songs in my head. I must have more control of it than other people? This is why I took up singing because of this strange feeling I felt one day and I kind of enjoyed it.

    You are amazing.I live in Cyprus and please don t stop to do such great video.You are great.I learn from you to many things about singing and I understand that if someone want to become a good singer he must learn how his body works ..I Have a question for you .which is the right way to take air f while singing?From the Mouth or from the nose?Thank you very much.God bless you.

    • @ArdenKaywinVocalStudio
      @ArdenKaywinVocalStudio  Před 5 lety +1

      Hi Andreas, thanks for writing. Both kinds of breathing (through the nose or through the mouth) are fine for singing. A nose breath tends to be a slower inhale, so a singer would generally use that when they have more time to breathe. But it doesn't really matter which kind of breath you are using as long as you release your body into the breath rather then tensing and trying to grab air.

    I notice that some singers alternate between the smiling technique and dropping the jaw depending on what they are singing. I watched Pavarotti and he mostly drops his jaw even on his High Notes...What's the difference?

    i have to tell you Arden, that the reality of where i come from in the UK, kills an artists chances of getting on, there are agents in our community, that if they get their small minded way, and if they dont like you, they phone around the other agencies and tell them not to work you, tell lies about you, so the venues dont work you, i experience this everyday, these are nasty people and believe me i am not paranoid, they are usually narrow minded people, that would sooner see you paralysed than do good for you, these are the obstacles i face everyday ,even after the pandemic, it will be a struggle to get work because of these low lifes.
