Gunpowder Technology in Medieval India | Military History & Empire

- In the late medieval era, Indian empires went through both a military and sociopolitical transformation thanks to the introduction of gunpowder technology (firearms and cannons). Gunpowder weapons led to centralization and innovation. It also created "big" winners and losers -- those who were willing to adapt, and those who were not.
In this video, we'll also be examining the introduction of gunpowder technology to India through the lens of the Vijayanagar Empire (and partly the Mughal Empire). Enjoy!

I always found it interesting that they could put guns on camels without it frightening the animal???
They used to tie legs of camels and make camel to kneel down in order to stop escaping battlefield
Indeed, it must've been quite traumatizing for the camel!
@@ayushrajput9479 Still though, what if the camel just jerks its body even really slightly? That would mess up the aim of the guns significantly, no?

Many decisive battles in india were won due to one side having superior gunpowder tech . Like panipat 1526 , talkikota 1565 and panipat 1761 .
Afghan won because of strategical superiority not gunpowder.
@@Abhishek-sr2pu gun powder weapons were important . Especially on the right flank where the tactic of creeping barrage and movement under cover of fire was performed by najib ud daula. Similarly on right side the bargi musketeers and articles men couldn't fire once the maratha cavalry engaged and the maratha cavalry was cut down by cannon fire and muskets .

Just facinating how much work goes into these videos. Amazing work mate
Fun fact: Sikh Empire had a professional western style army trained by the french.
Marathas had a small western style navy
The Mysoreans too, under Tipu Sultan, were attempting to build a European style navy using French technology but construction came to a halt with the increasing British, Hyderabadi and Maratha threat from the land.
The finest model drill army was created by the sawai raja jai singh II. just imagine what would be the future if he had even greater ambitions like uniting the subcontinent.
@@samarthmisra6064 Read about Battle of Gangwana where his modern army was brought to knees by a thousand Rathors on horseback.
@@_Manish_Kumar yeah, as he was ambushed by the rathore horsemen led by bhakt Singh. But I do not get your point. Even Americans were defeated by technologically inferior Veitnamese. In a battle, there are multiple other factors than just technology. @@samarthmisra6064 I havent read anything about this battle being an ambush. Wikipedia says it was a pitched battle. The point I am trying to make is he couldnt even control the Rajputs in his own background, how the hell was he going to unite the subcontinent.

Awesome video man. I have a video suggestion on Ishikawa Goemon. He is basically this Japanese Ninja in late 16th century who stole golds and other valuables and gave it to the poor people. After a failed assassination of then Daimyo Toyotomi Hideyoshi, he was boiled alive in public along with his son. His son survived though. It's a fascinating story and I haven't seen any history CZcamsr covering this story. Please consider reading about it.
Interesting! Thanks for the history recommendation
4:16 These Camels with mounted cannons played a big role in 3rd Panipat War. Najib effectively used them to create a wedge between Right flank and Vanguard of Marathas.

Additional info: it was in these battles that Shahajj father of Shivaji the first Maratha King made a name for himself. He acquired enough power to make for himself a semi-autonomous position within the Nizamshahi and Bijapur sultanates changing sides when beneficial.
He also got jagirs in Karnataka and Tamil Nadi (Thanjavur) which he gave to his sons (Half-brothers of Shivaji).

Edit: how did the Middle East get cannons before India?
The Mongol Empire.
@@Aaron_1428 Yes you're right, Mongols never used cannons for seige, they had the gigantic trebuchets for that. But, they were the 2nd ones to use rockets, mines and pole guns and hand cannons, from where the later mortars and first cannons developed. ( the mortars and guns developed in Europe, while the Ottomans were one of the first to successfully implement them on battlefield, not as a cavalry demoraliser, but as an effective killing weapon).
@@Aaron_1428They were first ones to successfully use it, it was being used already in the Eastern and Central Europe, and the later Khaganates in Russia as well.
@@Aaron_1428 And the pole guns I mentioned also have significant importance, in fact it defines the difference in approach towards gunpowder weapons in Middle East and in Europe. The former produced the first effective cannons, while the later produced the arquebuses and muskets.

Man I had been waiting for your video upload for so long. As a long time supporter it’s time we did something to boost your subs and also viewer numbers.
You are doing something no other channel is currently doing with regards to south Asian / Indian subcontinent military history.
You got to consider getting some Indian volunteers to get subtitles in major Indian language. Just Hindi alone will blow up your viewership as the Hindi heart land responds better to content they can understand.
