  • Helldivers 2 is being cancelled...
After an extremely controversial decision, Sony has decided to require PC players of Helldivers 2 on to create PlayStation accounts. PSN accounts have been an optional decision for players since the games inception, and now it's looking like Sony is making it a requirement.
The resulting backlash has seen Helldivers 2 getting review bombed into oblivion on Steam, and players facing a choice. Security concerns, as well as international customer concerns being the biggest issue here. But how big of a deal is this really? LittleBobby is here to talk about it.

As of 24 hours after the initial post from Sony, those who live in a country that can not make a PSN account will still be able to play the game. If players in those countries want to refund the game, they can as well (at this moment the refunds are for these countries only. Not everyone).

I would've said that people's reaction to this is very extra, but as someone who recently got their whole Apex Legends account deleted by EA recently, I can see the frustration. These big companies don't care about protecting our data and they give us reasons time and time again not to trust them.

People are starting to get tired of giving their data to everyone. I think this one just so happens to be the last straw.
Helldivers 2 also has, by its nature, given a habit to its players to unite under a common cause. The patriotism that people express about this game is probably much more real than anyone realises, because no matter what the current political landscape is telling us, people miss that sense of unity.

I get that, but unfortunately, we don’t make the tech. Until we can get lawmakers fully making it illegal, there’s not really much we can do and still enjoy digital entertainment from certain companies.

So I understand the outcry for those from countries that can’t make a PSN. Perfectly understandable.
But as usual waiting provides more details. In 24 hours it went from notice, people review bombing, confirmed that those who can’t make an account will still be able to play.

Honestly, I got 152 hours of fun out of it - I don't regret that purchase in any way. I would have loved to see it last longer, but part of security is picking your battles. But you also have to remember, many of us had accounts *long before* the big data breaches began. So, for example, I played grounded because I already had a microsoft account from my days with xBox and technet. I also had a friend who refused to because Microsoft's security isn't exactly top notch, and they did not already have an account. I've also closed or abandoned accounts for services like Ubisoft when they got too offensive.
End of the day, security is balancing risk vs reward. You will never be 100% safe. The question is how much do you give to who, and is that value enough to accept the risk. Security isn't safety. It's acceptable risk.

Absolutely nailed it. And that’s what I’m talking about. It’s a personal choice, but to pretend that Sony is the only company jeopardizing security is silly.
And jumping on the hate bandwagon is even more stupid. I’ll still be playing HD2 from time to time, personally. But people need to speak with their wallets by not supporting next time instead of trying to cheat the system now that they’re done with Helldivers and feel like they can get an undeserved refund.
