I'd like to think Skull, Bonez, and Zee were originally the main characters. Maybe they were a metal band who revisit the source of their music: the house. Maybe they made a bet with each other to survive the longest inside the house, only to discover that the house is not only alive, but also hungry. Given the original design of the house, I bet this was supposed to be PG-13 and the higher-ups were like, "We can't make money with a PG-13 Animated horror film!".

Skull and Bones are literally the two kids that caused Constants death. Well at least they look extremely similar to the kids in the movie when the back story was explained.
I am so glad that this is being re-examined. Monster House is one of my favorite movies as a kid, and I really love getting juicy backstories. Thank you, Theorizer.
Wow, I never would've thought that they put any thought into these two characters. Maybe it's not all true, but I think Skull being a part of Bones' band is pretty hard to deny at this point. Nice theory on a small detail most would miss.

CORALINE THEORY:
If the beldam has control over the real world and can see through anything with button eyes, then can she see through the squid stuffed animal that she has. Coraline her real father are seen playing with it towards the end of the movie. it has a button eye and the doll that she had is nowhere to be seen, but the squid can be seen in her room the whole movie and in the other world.
Haley your theory is half answered he said that the buttons the bedlam sews she can see through but she didn’t sew them to the real toys but she has control of the real world and there is Vernon her son so what I think is she sewed the toys but with very little of “soul sand” and let Vernon to take the dolls to the real world so it could but also the doll of coralline knows the layout of the house like the bedroom, kitchen, living room, etc so it’s 50/50 that the dolls can see or it’s wrong and it’s the coralline doll so rn I can say that it could be 50/50

...Here's something worth looking into: *when does this movie take place?* The combination of heavy metal, children being out unattended after dark, and arcade game cabinets at a pizzeria suggests to me it's probably some time in the 80's.
There is a book between skull and bones childhood and the black cop were all on this but the cop left and only bones and skull were the only one seeing Constance as a ghost made of fire

Everytime I watch Monster House (the arcade scene specifically) I always had a feeling that Skull somehow knew that Nevercracker's house was possessed. He does act like a total comic nerd and doesn't really know but I think that there's more to it than that for some reason.

This is honestly one of my all-time favorite videos by the Theorizer and I wish that more of the backstory was either referenced in the film or put into another film and released.
Also: I wish there were more fan-written stories on the relationships - possible and actual - from this film in general! (I’ve searched a bit already but haven’t found much.)
So,Elizabeth and Bones are basically Kirito and Asuna in Sword Art Online Abridged (except for the love triangle)
I love how your mind works, your calming voice is relaxing and I thoroughly enjoy your theories.
All I could think of was the parallel and how Bones clearly has a history with the house as shown with his drunken stupor taunting as well as the house luring him in, showing she remembers. Z has a bitter sourness told debunking the house and its rumors, which could mean she has had her own history with the house. Skull also shows some sort of knowledge toward the subject, could just be random "nerd" stuff he picked up on during his "travels" or it could be that he shares a history with the house as well. They all could have had a life-changing experience with Nebbercracker's house in their younger years, knowing they grew up together and that these hauntings have been going on for 45 years.

Funnily enough I noticed the similarities in the band and character names ages ago. I guess I thought it was kind of obvious, although this theory certainly went far beyond mine! Good catches!
Don't the three kids somewhat resemble the love triangle? The desighns for the characters seem to have some similarities. Like how the little girl acts all nice and polight much like the baby sitter did at the start only to show that she's more rough and ragged when it comes down to it. Or how the desighns if the two boys being hubby and langthy same as the two in the love triangle. I wonder if there ever is a continuation that the kids will in a way mirror what happened to the teens instead of music this time being a band of paranormal hunters?

YEEESSSS!!! Finally someone agrees with me omf. I've always wondered what was up with that line. I've sort of put it down to Fred Willard (who played the dad) ad-libing that line because he and Catherine O'Hara (who played the mom) are great improvisers in the comedy scene. But it would be really interesting if there was a deeper meaning behind it!
There’s a reason why there was Never a sequel
We know that Nebbercracker always thougt that the house was dangerous for the kids. But how Nebbercracker maneged to have dinamite without Constance to know about it? Also how the heck grown people missed everything. I found a little odd that DJ's parents came just when everything was OK. Never noticed that Constance died? And does the police know that people died there and appeared in the basement? I'm very glad that Constance didn't digest the kids... maybe she had like bulimia or something related. Obese people tend try to find a way to lose weight to fit in... And with Constance being at the circus and with kids throwing thing I bet she felt aweful.
This revelation with the babysitter and the former Skulls and Bones band was very interesting. Personally, I'm working on the lore for Trolls (Dreamworks film) and Bellwether among other theories. Monster House was always a movie that I liked because of all the unanswered questions left to interpretation. I definitely want to see your other thoughts on this. Fingers crossed I get my channel up in May so I can share my own theorizing goodness full throttle as well. Take care.

The theorizer I would like to point something out
Skull and bones *is* a clear reference to the real life rock band guns n roses in so many freaking ways that you could make a video for this reference only ( *hint* *hint* *obvious request is obvious* )
First of all the name is skull n bones aka something n something which isnt all that common in the world of rock bands
Second The name skull n bones just like the name guns n roses has the "n" instead of the "and "
Third the name skull n bones contains the names of the two "rock-stars"( skull and bones) and wouldn't you know it the guns n roses has the name of the rock-star singer (rose)
And all of that was just out of the top of my head I can't stress that enough

Im surprised you didn’t add the part where she drops a house plant and then pretends like DJ did it. She does this in front of him to demonstrate just how easily she can lie and fake something. Which, kinda comes out of nowhere in the story. It’s just supposed to show that adults listen to adults and not kids...but it’s also kinda over dramatic, however when you consider the idea that she uses manipulation to get the things she wants, it just sounds like a part of her character

I watched this movie in Russian dubbing, as I live in a Russian speaking country, and now I see how many details are lost due to translation. In Russian version Bones is always referred as ‘Mosol’ and skull as Reginald. I was trying to find the deeper connections between characters too, but the translation made it impossible lol

Also, in one of the earlier drafts of the script the circumstances that lead to the possession of a house was that it’d happen if they died in combat when defending their house/prized structure. Which is an additional reason why the kids believe Nebbercracker had possessed the house as their altercation at the start of the film happened. Then in the flashback, the same thing happened but w/ Constance before her death.

Dude, I watched this movie when I was 6 years old and it scared the living crap out of me and yet I would keep watching it over and over because its so entertaining and creative with it's story and characters! Although I kinda don't like the climax where the house is chasing after them and getting blown up in the end I do love everything that lead up to that and how it all became! Very good and underrated film that's perfect for Halloween!
