  • Eddie Van Halen Demos the 5150IIIS
    When Eddie Van Halen wanted a rig with “more gas in the tank,” we delivered in the form of the loud and lethal 5150IIIS. Custom-modded to suit EVH’s evolving tastes, this powerful all-tube head is packed with new features for tailoring your low end, including new independent rear resonance controls and increased gain on channels two and three.
    In this video, the legendary guitarist puts the 5150IIIS’ deep bass contour and seamless switching to the test. Experience this seething addition to EVH’s own touring arsenal, with a “blackout” cosmetic treatment inspired by his main Wolfgang® guitar.

    I saw Van Halen in 1984, and to this day, has been one of the greatest concerts I've ever attended...and as aways, Eddie is first and foremost, a "tinkerer", and God Bless Him in his continuing endeavors!! "Those who stop chasing their tones, will never progress"...

      I remember the first time I heard "Hot For Teacher" off that same album. I had just flown from Texas to Los Angeles, jumped in my dads convertible (I was 14 at the time); he turns on the radio while we're still in the parking lot at Bob Hope Airport (Burbank) and I couldn't believe what I was hearing as we cruised down Hollywood Way with the top down. I hated TX; was SOOO happy to be back home & that song was the icing on the cake. I'll never forget that day.

Dave is a joke as a vocalist (he basically talks his way through most tunes) and his onstage persona is utterly cringe worthy. He was a bad ass when he was young but now he's just creepy. Ed is actually a ground breaking figure in the history of rock and roll. He could have done it with any competent vocalist.

    I really liked the tone of the Ernie Ball guitar and Peavey 5150 amp back in the 90s. The guitar sound on the F.U.C.K album did not come out "bright"(if that's the right word to say), seemed a bit muddled when mixed with the bass, drums and vocals. Maybe where he switched to Ernie Ball(new guitar for him then) and also the Peavey 5150 being new, just made it more of an experiment and somewhat a trial, butholy smokes did that tour for the F.U.C.K album sound great. The tone here is ok, it's Eddie, but I miss the past tones since I grew up with it...both the DLR and Sammy years

    • @SimplyGooch
      @SimplyGooch Před 6 lety

      late to the party but i think at least from a production perspective and looking at the way he used to tune the amp's settings, its because the mids were cut on an amp thats meant for higher midrange. Most players who use the Soldano SLO-100 shoot for the 12:00 or higher on the mids for that amp. its just what its meant for. The 5150 amps were always very high end and bright, with the mids scooped hard, but yet it cuts through even at low midrange.

      FUCK was done with a modified Soldano amp. He ripped that off and sold it as his first 5150 amp.

    I'm glad to see that Ed is keeping his jones for tones well fed. One of my early mentors, a Mr. Foster told me, "Everyone one of us has a muse and that muse has a creativity craving that demands to be fed if we are to receive the muse's inspiration in return." I reckon for Ed, it's realizing on the PC board the components and traces that allow his ears to hear what he already hears in his head and seeks from the without from his ears.
