Joe Satriani is WRONG! THIS is Van Halen MOST DIFFICULT Guitar Riff!

- Joe Satriani said that "Mean Street" is Eddie Van Halen's most difficult (and impossible!) riff to play.. well he's wrong! The pedals I used to get Van Halen tone ⬇️

What's the Van Halen riff that drives you the craziest?! Let me know!🤘🏻👇🏻
All of them :) Girl Gone Bad always gives me trouble
I think Spanish Fly.....i dont know why....for that´s a crazy one!!
And of course Riff drom Humasn Being!!
the song cant this stuff no more crazy chords.
Listen to the actual chorus riff to Amsterdam (no vocals) and it’s INSANE, the rhythm part is so DIFFERENT. Theres early footage of this riff while he’s working on it in the studio, such an Interesting riff!
The tapped intro to Hot For Teacher. It's not a difficult riff but my little stubby fingers can't cope with the 3-7-12T stretch 😂
It’s the old joke: how many guitarists does it take to change a lightbulb? Just one. The rest stand around saying “yeah, well I could have done it better.”
😂
mmm
Hahahahaha !!!!
I found out all my friends always played a song differently
Nice job, Danilo. Ben Eller argues that Hang Em High is another riff that is nearly impossible to play because of the swing element on top of the speed.
Yeah that could might as well be because of the exact reason, uncle Ben is not wrong!😁
I've seen that Ben Eller video too but if I had to guess who can pay it right other than Wolfie I'd say Pete Thorn gives it a good go
Agree with the above comment about Hang'em High. Re: I'm the One, I think Phil X plays it pretty close to the original.
Satsuma can play it, but he's one of the VERY few.
@@j1shot2 With regards to I'm the One, Jacob Deraps is another one. He does it while actually singing the song live. I think Satriani can do it, since he has a lot of the same kind of swing on Satch Boogie, if only big name guitarists are relevant.
Your full speed version at the end was pretty damn close
Kinda..more or less... haha But thanks so much!!
I disagree it was way off - this dude knows what he’s talking about. Eddie’s dad was a Jazz musician, so he grew up listening to that swing which Alex carries as well. I agree - very hard to make rock swing like Jazz.
Edward was definitely one of the “swingingest” rock guitar players EVER in my opinion. Yes, his solos are incredible and incendiary. But it was his rhythm playing, swing and feel that got me hooked back in ‘78!
Totally agree with you, the swing of I'm the one is just insane 😅
It is! 🥲
Conceptually, the intro to Meanstreet seems among the most inventive licks of all time. Eddie gets credit for a lot of those. When Joe answered this question he was talking to Howard Stern and his audience. Thank you for posting this and reminding me of how great EVH is.
Agree, and that's why I said it's one of the most "confusing" intro I've ever learned. If you think it was made in '81 it's something super different and innovative. Eddie was the best
Great video! I agree with you. The intro to “I’m the One (show your love)” is crazy. I haven’t attempted to learn it since the late 80’s. I think I need to try and learn it again.
Eddie Van Halen was like Mozart. Just on another level…
To this day, I still don’t understand how one is supposed to swing at faster tempos.
I would have guessed with "practice".... But now I think the answer is "talent" 🥲
Grande! Fin troppo modesto, e la battuta sul "crying" mi ha spezzato.
Comunque bel video su due pezzi pazzeschi, e la tua versione di I'm the one è davvero forte!
Never cared much for the INTRO to Mean Street. But the song itself….thats one of the nastiest riffs of all time. The band was killing it.
Same here. That intro gets all the attention, but it was probably just some doodling around that Ed did. The song rock but the intro never really grabbed me the way it does for other people
What? No way, that intro “to this day” still gives me
Goosebumps . But Mean Streets is such a great tune.
Just when I think I have the swing nailed, I listen to the album and cry.
Really u nailed it, Man...
Thanks man, I appreciate it! Although master Eddie is just on a different planet haha
Just awesome great playing, I might have to buy that 5150 overdrive sounds great. Hey question for a home amp what do you think about the Vox VT20X Combo? or do you prefer something else? Thanks;)
Thanks so much! That 5150 overdrive just blew my mind. The day I got it I sent some recordings on whatsapp to different friends and they all thought it was the 51510 AMP! Personally for home practicing (combo and around that budget) I'd go with the Boss Katana, I think you can find some used ones for under $200. (the MKIII is coming out next week so maybe you'll find the MKII even cheaper!) Another great amp is the Blackstar Debut 50R (which has a power reduction from 50w to 5w for home usage) and it sounds great! The Vox VT20X is still a solid choice nonetheless tho!
@@DaniloVicari OK I'll check out those amps you recommended, I don't mind paying for something better, I used to own the EVH 5150 amp in the 80's and I just picked up my guitar after 25yrs of not playing, Thanks; )
Great video Danilo, i have just started to learn some of eddys masterpieces on my Wolfgang custom guitar , i see the pedals that you recommend but which amp are you using and if you can elaborate on a few setting , thank you for these videos and breaking down these incredible masterpieces
Thanks! I've tried the pedal in different amps and also the UAFX Lion 68. In this video I'm using my Friedman Be50 Deluxe but with almost zero gain to it and almost clean. Any Marshall style amp would work great. The important thing is to start with a sound with very little gain and let the pedal do most of the work! 😁
Don’t forget Eddies gear too! His amps, pedals and guitars the way his guitar was tuned and his epic playing style.
Complimenti Danilo, non è facile fare un video non scontato sul Re🤟🏼 e complimenti anche x come suoni! Per me il livello di Van Halen è quasi tutto assai difficile ma che ne pensi dello "swing" o groove di Hang'em High?! Ciao, Marco
So cool you made this video. I’ve seen so many covers that get everything right except the groove, which is essential for this tune. You and Phil X are the best I’ve heard (besides Eddie himself).
Can you tell me your entire gear setup of what you're using to get that VH sound? It sounds really good. I've bought so much stuff over the years and i can't get that close to it. I'm not nearly as good of a guitar player as you but i still love playing and learning VH songs. That would make a great video.
Nice post Danilo and term swing is a good explanation. I wonder also if it had something to do with the way Ed held his pick too which always struck me as a bit different. My vote goes to Hang 'Em High too for the same reason.
I’ve always struggled with Hang ‘em High. Eddie’s rhythm was next level!
Watched this video with headphones, and nice touch Danilo putting the guitar in the left channel and the reverb for the guitar in the right channel like Van Halen I album!
About Edward's timing, everybody has their own internal rhythmic meter, and most are able to copy it when learning from most of the greats, but Edward's was so unique to him and virtually impossible to nail because of how he felt the beat. No different than someone like Phil Rudd's drumming with AC/DC. No one can pull back on a beat like Rudd. Many try and get close but that beat feel is so unique to Rudd, it's impossible to nail exactly, Like Edward's beat feel.
Thank you so much, I'm glad someone noticed it 😁 you're exactly right!! Phil Rudd is another great example for sure!
excellent job Danilo congratulations !!
Thank you so much!!
Excellent video and GREAT playing! I think "ain't talking 'bout love" intro is played with a flanger.😁
Danilo è il miglior chitarrista italiano per contenuti CZcams …oltre alla bravura sullo strumento è quello che “ mette mano “ ai suoni corretti. Bravo❤
Sei troppo gentile, grazie mille! 🙏🏻
@@DaniloVicari ma figurati: il lavoro va sempre sostenuto se fatto bene. Buona Musica sempre ❤️
What a video!! Amazing!! I would add that if Eddie's feel is what defines his difficulty then it is present is SO many songs from Hot For Teacher to Beautiful Girls. It's the equivalent of the Pagey swagger.
thank you! yes, exactly!! And that feeling is not only present in riffs and rhythm sections but also in some of solos! He was the best...
Pretty damn good on The One your swing was very good ! Keep working on the fluid picking hand movement .
Excellent playing!
They really did capture lightning in a bottle with 'I'm The One' as it's played on the record. I don't think I've ever heard Ed play it quite the same way live, and I've seen all the live footage of the band playing this song...
I completely agree with your opinion. Been practicing “I’m the one” for about 3yrs now and I’m in the same boat as you speed wise.
I hope you'll get some better results than mine haha
Me too! Getting better, but eh....One ting that seems to help is tapping my foot and rocking the guitar back and forth a bit. It adds some imperfection to it. I got that from watching Jacob Deraps do it. His, IMHO, is probably the best I've seen.
Nice job!!
Well done young man! That was badass!
I love the way you look at things. Humility. We try our best to emulate our heroes, but respect that they cannot be duplicated. Ed had something special that can't be replicated; it was creative genius and FEEL.. RIP.
Wow man !!!! You are good.... don't worry speed comes with practicing over and over and over and over and over and over and over again....cheers man!!!
Great video. I feel like people don't highlight the importance of the swing feel to Van Halen's music enough.
Had to come back and say I would love to hear you try and play some of Joe's more amazing solos.
Dam, nice job bud. Great sound and shit your playing is excellent
Yeah, I can hear what you mean. You have a little more "space" in your "swing/Shuffle" compared to Eddie. His Swing is a bit tighter with not as much space. This is just how diffrent people express the swing. Thats why no drummer swings exactly the same to the pocket.
Precisely, and I don't think it's related to just practice or different techniques, it's the way Eddie felt the swing and played it. He was incredible
HE WAS ASKED ON THE SPOT ON LIVE RADIO. LOL Put yourself in his shoes. HAHAHAHA
Exactly, without ever really practicing it. I'm sure Joe could nail it with some practice.
You're serious? You think up until that moment Satriani had had no time or reason to contemplate which of Eddie's riffs were hardest to play? Did you no realize why Joe was there in the studio that day with the rest of VH?
Think that Tosin thumb picking technique is more difficult, but at that time it was a riff from another planet...still today.
I'm The One and Hang 'Em High have always been a huge struggle for me to play because the fast alternate picking is just not at my level and you have to swing them too.
Complimenti sei bravissimo 👏
Pensa ancora non mi sono mai cimentato in un riff di Van Halen…😅
😱😱 malissimo! Tocca rimediare haha Prova a vedere la sua versione di Pretty Woman, Ain’t Talking about Love, Running With The Devil o Unchained. Sono tutti molto belli e non troppo complicati per cominciare 😁 e grazie mille!!
@@DaniloVicari Ok 👌 grazie per il consiglio provo a breve 🎸🎶💥🤟
you played it awesome 🤘
Thank you so much!! 🙏🏻
Bro you fucking killed that
What was the signal path here?
You inspire me so much
Thank you!! I'm so happy to hear it, you just made my day!
That is a good take, that is a hard riff to play perfectly. I also think the solos are very difficult to nail cleanly. Especially the first one with the fast triplet picking. A lot of guys can play it sloppy, not a lot can play it crisp
I absolutely agree,I remember learning it from tab and I thought it would be easy but I was like wtf
Where did the reverb suddenly appear from ??
I've added the reverb post recording using H-Reverb (from waves) panned to the right to make it sound more like the Van Halen I record 😁
well done on the one!
the hardest part is the fast scale after....you did it perfect....still stuck on that part......what is your opinion on Jake E Lee? my fav Ozzy player
Deraps does a perfect cover of mean street intro and everything van halen
Awesome playing and respect to the king.
Thanks so much! 🙏🏻
That sounds better than my 5150 Iconic amp with the eq, overdrive, and boost already built in. I wonder if the dedicated pedal would sound better or a waste of money?
Ciao Danilo.....Sei Grande!!!!
Does Sweetwater landed in Europe??
I guess they could ship to Europe 🤔 In any case I've put the links to the pedals also from Thomann cause I guess it's easier for Eu shipping!
There is a full isolated guitar track on yt of 'im the one'. Its scary. Sometimes when im feeling brave i try to keep up with it, but fail every time.🥴
Yep, I actually listened to the whole isolated track a couple of times and it's incredibly inspiring!
Nice!
Eddie started on piano and drums… as I did… very rhythmic instruments
The rhythm is the easy part for me… it’s the guitar stuff that’s very hard lol
Yes, this one and Hang Em High are the hardest because of his rhythmic genius. Edward was the king of rock and funk!😊😊😊😊
The end of little guitars is 1 of rocks best
Oh my. You are so good
you're too kind! 🙏🏻
In my 20’s in the 80’s I could pick up a lot of Van Halen. I’m the one always baffled me, there’s a lot going on and a lot at speed.
I would say summer nights because it was making use of a trans trem
I put about 6 hours into I'm the One and it is damn tricky. I am still nowhere close to having it smooth and swingin'.
I am not a professional musician but I thought you did a great job. At least 95% of the way there. Have a wonderful weekend
Has anybody ever put the midi tab of the riff into DAW and then applied a swing percentage to see where eddies was?
I don’t play guitar. But I was in high school when Van Halen came on the scene. How he had so much fill in his rhythm I never understood. But it sounded awesome. It was like to opposing forces dancing with each other. Oh no Sammy. David was the better singer for that style of play.
Not him using phase for the flange part of ain't talkin' 'bout love
Nice job on I'm the one though, I think you could get it, it's almost there
A thumba slappa on the lowa E'ah stringa
You got a point! But would dare to say that strings instrument players (as drummers too) aren't "mimicable" if you understand me lol... but there are one or two people that will be 99% accurate tho
Very good job regardless! With the king, everyone has their own issues trying to copy, emulate him. I’m the one, is tough due to that feel and swing! That swing is in everything he does!
Agree. There are also some solos that have that swing feeling to them and they are so unique and incredibly good!
Depends on the player on what’s the most difficult
I believe he was demonstrating the difficulty alone. Each piece of music has it's nuances
I think Dirty Movies is actually Ed's toughest intro..
Wow! Eres un monstruo Danilo. 😮
Try "Hang 'Em High" 😘
it would be the same as I'm the one so I can't play that one either hahah
@@DaniloVicari no, invece l'intro di I'm the one l'hai suonato molto fedele all'originale, complimenti! È molto difficile renderlo così, bravo!
Ah scusa non sapevo fossi italiano😁 Comunque grazie mille! Sei super gentile ma non è ancora giustissimo purtroppo 😭
You're a Monster, my friend!
You're too kind!!
Eddie è Eddie! Però bravissimo, complimenti davvero! Risulta molto naturale! 👏🎸🔥
Sarebbe molto bello! Pensateci🤷♂️ grazie 😉
I'm The One. It's not that hard to learn the notes, but as Ben Eller and Phil X say, the swing is the hard part. That song has dogged me for 48 years. I swear I'll get it down this year. It's the same for the solo on Mean Street. Notes I can get with practice, swing...takes a LOT more practice. You did a great job.
Thanks! You're absolutely right and I really hope you get it down then, I believe in you! 💪🏻
@@DaniloVicari You did a fantastic job on it! It is still just about the hardest song to learn on guitar and play well almost close to 5 decades later.
Ed played a lot of intros off beat with extra beat on what most player play four notes but Ed played 5 because he didn’t start on beat 1. Ed and Alex had that in common and Alex played to Ed’s rhythm, so did Micheal Anthony. So to play “like” Ed which really no one can, don’t play like a classically trained musician. Same thing goes for SRV.
If you get close be happy with that. The magic is in those legendary musicians hands.
To me Satriani was quite right and you're not stiff or else, in that other case you're only missing the right delay timing preset. Namastè.
DOING THIS SITTING IN AIR CONDITIONING IS ONE THING, EDDIE DID IT ON STAGE.
... in front of 10's of thousands of people - LIVE - not in front of a camera (where you can edit out mistakes). 😆💯👍
Dude your shit sounds insane huge balls
Fantastico!!!
I'm defending Joe here. 5am broadcast, no setup or rehearsal, amp settings where they sit. Asked to play something difficult written by someone you spent most of your life listening to under pressure.... Y'all overanalyzing this shit. I bet Eddie would agree.... PLAY LIVE AND LOUD , LAY IT OUT AND AND FIND YOUR OWN SOUND!!!
(it will keep you too busy to criticize someone else doing the same!!)
I think it sounds great 👍🏿
Bravo!
Grazie mille! 🙏🏻
I can play I'm the one very easily. The impossible riff to me is Hang'em'high
back in the 60's it was accepted that if you did a cover it was likely to be in your own style.especially if it was blues. why now does everything suddenly have to be played note for note? what happened to creativity?
I think, “Hang ‘em High” played correctly is tougher to play…
Been saying it since first album came out- Eddies RIGHT HAND (picking hand) is faster, stronger, cleaner, better than anyone I’ve ever heard…still true today.
James Hatfield would like a word… both incredible.
George Lynch is God, and has been
@@williamvoorhees8201 I know George. He would be the first to admit his right hand isn’t near as good as Eddie’s.
Who should i believe Satriani or Danilo...
SATRIANI! Always Satriani hahah But I guess you could learn both of the songs and decided for yourself 😂
@@DaniloVicari Love your videos. Im far from learning any EVH songs, maybe one day i can do it. Keep up the good work.
Now do it from the eruption solo live . Without the pedals. Eddie didn't use the cheat stuff
I wonder what Satriani would sound like playing I'm the One?
IMO... incredibly good! hahah He's such an amazing player and he loves that swing feeling so I guess he would be one of the few people on earth to really make justice to it!
La parte iniziale ha solo una traduzione in italiano: cazzeggio. Che poi le si conferisca un significato musicale è un altro discorso
How about leaving for the reverb settings you’re using that makes all the difference in the sound. 😂😮😂
Ain't talking about love cover pleaaaase
Hahah why not! 😁
I think that JS shows which one riff is the most difficult for him and that's enough. But the your title is a RIGHT clickbait.
Bottom line is Eddie is/was a guitar god and your really f@cking good. 👍🏼
