    One thing I've always loved about Superman is that a well-written Superman is often "a simple dish well made." He's not without complications, but he's not overly complex. His simplicity allows him to be used to breakdown complex themes. And people forget just how subversive he was back when he was first create. 80+ years of existence has made him the "standard" and I love that for him.

    • @detremis
      @detremis  Před rokem +24

      Ooo love that line: “a simple dish well made.”

    • @Mai57
      @Mai57 Před rokem +13

      @@detremis I love it too. Not sure where the saying comes from, but my dad told me when I was learning to cook as a kid that "A simple dish, well-made, will always bring more joy than a complex dish that's poorly made." He wanted me to remember not to do too much because I kept getting a *bit* too excited with our spice cabinet. 🤣 I grew to appreciate simple things, not just foods, thanks to him, I think... and he's the one who introduced me to Action Comics and early Superman. 😆
      Then, I think a year ago, I heard OSP's Red call Superman "a simple dish, well made." during one of their diatribe videos, and it resonated with me. I was like, "If that isn't the most *_absolutely_* correct thing about Superman I've heard all year... 🤯"

    • @rottensquid
      @rottensquid Před rokem +4

      @@Mai57I love that. It's a perfect description of, I think, most Superheroes. And in fact, most movies. There's nothing more tiresome than when what's supposed to be a fun action movie gets bogged down with longwinded backstory. You get the impression that the writers just kept adding more detail in the hopes that it would give a flat story some dimension.
      Superman is simple, but that doesn't mean his story is simplistic. There's a lot of depth in that simplicity. Superman does great things because he's a good person. People misunderstand him when they miss the goodness because they're so captivated by the greatness. Lex Luthor sees only his power, not the importance of what he uses it for. Lois appreciates what he uses it for, but she doesn't see that his power is less important than his character. That's why she doesn't see Clark, only Superman.
      And the same can be said for the audience. The villain of Kill Bill delivers a villainous monologue about how Clark is the disguise and Superman is the real person, and people actually thought that this was an insightful truth, ignoring where this "truth" is coming from. It reveals the complexity embedded in Superman's simplicity. He's like a haiku, a very simple set of premises that reveal a complex truth about power and the highest good, a truth people often fail to grasp. So they dismiss him as too simple, too boring, because they don't see how much is contained in that simplicity. He doesn't need to be complicated by doubts or inner torment. He doesn't need to be reinvented as a psychopathic villain with limitless power. That misses the point. He works just fine as a good person with the power to do great things. It's the rest of the world that makes that complicated, not him.

Some of those perspectives may be very warped and overall very unhealthy and damaging to maintain for that character, which can lead to them giving to much to the point they can no longer give anymore and help no one ever again I think is actually way way more complex and thought provoking than simple gritty overly violent and dramatic revenge porn but hey that’s just me.

    There's actually was a comic that had Superman talk about that his invulnerability doesn't negates him from feeling pain but that he simply processes it differently. So while he may not take any physical damage he still feels the effects of it, which is actuality is something that has been showcased numerous times and if you read the comics or just Google images of Superman getting hurt would negate any misconception of this.

    • @detremis
      @detremis  Před rokem +2

      Makes sense! Yah, I always saw it as him as getting disoriented rather than hurt. The comics do flesh it out better, but I’m hoping for more “mainstream” Supes media to really emphasize the mental barrier that comes with pain: to keep fighting even though it hurts so much.
      Seems like a lot of people (who aren’t Superman fans but watch mainstream) just see Supes as an OP being that doesn’t get hurt.

Storytelling wise it makes sense but from a realistic perspective it doesn't most people don't know how fighting, muscle to brain connection and pain works so they won't notice it or care; but getting a small sting like pain repeatedly becomes dull after a while with endorphins kicking in and simply you getting used to it mentally. Its all nitpick but superpowers and writing are always inconsistent and pain is supposed to be a body reaction to a treat if you're pushed or hit slowly or and lightly no pain but you still feel it same should apply to superman getting hit by attacks that do zero damage, it's not like he's taking damage then regenerating like wolverine and others

    The thing that's great about Superman and his powerset is something OSP identified in one of their Detail Diatribes: Superman's powerset is great for *saving people* and only secondarily for making entertaining fights with bad guys. Sure, *Superman* is invulnerable, but the people in a collapsing building aren't. Crucially, Lois Lane isn't either. This sets him up for degrees of success in those rescues, and Superman is a good enough person that any degree of failure will weigh on him.

Imagine the mental fortitude needed to hear constant suffering and having superpowers but still being limited in how many you can save.
      Should Supes save his love Lois? Or should he constantly be saving other people 24/7. Can Supes live his life or should he always go and save others. Of course the answer is balance, but I loved that iteration for the questions it posed.

I'm still hoping others will like it but i wrote a comic character and universe built around a Superman clone of sorts. One who caused a lot of destruction, but not by choice. If Superman had to be simplified to one word, it's "perseverence." And it's such an important characteristic of his that it's literally been passed on to every single iconic superhero you know and love. He's a simple nice guy, who PERSEVERES in his decency, despite and especially when, the world around isn't.

    Superman is the pinacle of heroism because his strength doesn't comes from his powers, but his resolve to do the right thing from a very stable and mature perspective. Now: what's the right thing to do? That is the conflict of Superman. He has to make decisions using his limited worldview that is the same that you and me have and that is what makes him relatable.
    That's why Lex Luthor is his perfect antagonist, someone devious that seek to control and manipulate normal people to achieve his goals.

    The CZcams channel Overly Sarcastic Productions put forward the argument that Superman works best when his rescue efforts are front and centre to the story instead of some supervillain fight. For instance, in the classic Superman: the Movie (the grand-daddy of all modern superhero movies), the cataclysmic final act isn't a cinematic final fight against Zod or whatever; it's Superman struggling against....the damage and danger caused by a massive earthquake. He's racing across the West Coast, faster than a speeding bullet, trying to save as many people as (super-)humanly possible, and using the full extent of his considerable powers to do so.

      Absolutely agree. I think for My Adventures w Superman specifically, since it is a young Supes, battles against villains may have more weight since Superman is inexperienced. Also I read an iteration of Supes where his hearing is so good that he can hear tragedies across the world. Even with his powers he can’t save them all. Imagine the mental fortitude needed. Crazy

    Superman's not difficult to write; just put him up against threats that can't be punched into submission. And that implies a deeper error writers make: they act like Superman's deal should be punching supervillains. While that should probably happen sometimes, Superman's main deal is saving people. He fights supervillains because they threaten people, not because punching supervillains is his life's purpose. If you read old Silver Age Superman comics, he contends with all sorts of issues that have nothing to do with supervillains, from convincing a blind girl that he isn't a fraud (spoilers: he cures her blindness) to finding a lost infant.

Lois Lane is smart but the audience that says she's dumb for not realizing it sooner, probably don't know that most people wouldn't imagine Superman living a mundane life as a reporter since he's got powers most men would dream of. And Tas did give Superman hardships like Parasite kidnapping him and discovering his secrets, Darkseid killing his friend Dan Turpin, being sent to a dystopian future, and having the world turn against him. personally I am thankful that we are getting lighter DC stories, sure I love some angst, but the endless progression of torturous angst of the hero and reality for the sake of complexity is a HUGE turn off because I am here to escape reality. If I want tragic reality I can just turn on the news. I want to laugh at silly jokes or hyperfixate on a character who is adorable and want good things for them, because that's how I cope with reality. If the writer wants the hero to fall into an endless pit of darkness then put it in the tragedy genre section

  • @jagnestormskull3178

    My biggest problem was what they did with the villains; Intergang is now a group of three petty thieves? It's INTER-gang, as in *international.* Or making Livewire tech-based, or making Ivo into a Lex Luthor clone, rather than an android designer. It's not necessarily the quality of these villains, but rather, that they're taking the names of comic book top villains and attaching them to entirely different characters.
    And yes, I know that there is some liberty in adaptation, but cohesion is also important. Darkseid can't be an anarchist, for example, because that's not Darkseid. Darkseid is anti-life, the hollow shells that people become without their free will.
    I also disagree that Superman should feel more pain. I think he feels too much pain, because even if Superman is discovering his powers, invulnerability is a not something that has to be discovered, it's an innate property of Superman's being.

    I personally am not the biggest fan of the mental pain angle as to me it just feels like a way to say that pain itself is the worst factor to endure.
    To me, the biggest factor is to showcase that Superman just can't save everyone. This to me is one of the main takeaways of his character as a person and as a superhero. He's still deep down is unable to save everyone from factors that if he could would in some way make the world truly a better place for everyone.
    But at the same time, he comes to know that it is irresponsible of him to truly be that absolute savior because it would take away what he's trying to stand for, in that everyone can be Superman like him. Everyone deep down can overcome what they truly fear, hate, and are challenged by, and through their own means.
    Superman is a person that doesn't mind pain, cause pain is superficial to him, just a thing that everyone has. What he can't mind is a person being unable to overcome obstacles in their way. Superman is a very reactionary person.

    It’s providing the good things we like or want to see more of, while also mixing things up with its story building to provide something new. And while some of that new can be hit or miss, it’s at least interesting enough to keep me invested (such as the villain origins being more tech based)
    And one really big but also really small change I’ve noticed, is that Clark still doesn’t know about Krypton and Jor El because the hologram speaks Krptonian. Anywhere else it’s pretty much always English and we all understand it, but here Clark doesn’t and with a new interpretation we also don’t understand it either. It’s a simple change, but also a pretty big one for Clark’s story, and it’s something new and old fans can be interested in because of what it might lead to in the future and how that changes and develops from what we’ve known in the past

    Along with the whole "other Loises saw Clark as competition" part, the other Loises were also already established reporters before their respective Clarks showed up at the Daily Planet. She is Clark's SENIOR in those versions; she has to show him the ropes of being a reporter in the big city. In particular, '90s animated Lois went out of her way to treat Clark as a clueless Kansas hayseed as opposed to her streetwise city slicker-ness, constantly deriding him by calling him by the name of his hometown, "Smallville".
    Whereas the new version of Lois starts off at the same "know-nothing intern with something to prove" level as Clark. Here, they are EQUALS. Along with what was mentioned in the video, this equailty in their relationship from the moment they met also allows this Lois to quickly see Clark as someone who could be amazing like Superman... and someone she could fall in love with.

    The thing that feels missing from the show is the original dynamic that Lois is in love with the grandiose male wish-fulfillment fantasy of Superman, and that's not a basis for a real relationship. Because Superman is the persona placed on his acts of greatness, while the real person is Clark. Superman's acts of greatness come from Clark Kent's basic goodness. And if you only see value in one and not the other, you're missing the point of greatness. You love the super, but not the hero.
    So Lois already taking an immediate interest in Clark sacrifices that dynamic, and makes everything too easy for their relationship. It bypasses the traditional love triangle between Clark, Lois, and Superman. Why would they do that? I think this is an interesting question, and the show is set up to try and answer it. I assume the upcoming James Gunn film, Superman: Legacy, will return to the more traditional Lois/Clark/Superman dynamic. So the whole point of this show is to explore an alternate dynamic for the characters. We'll see where it goes.

Clark Kent had a friend group to support him in the "Smallville tv series". It was such a wining formula that Arrow and Flash both got large support teams in their respective tv series. Same goes for most of the CW Arrowverse tv shows, including Supergirl. It just works for the narrative if the hero is not constantly lying to his closest friends and they can help him out.

    This idea that this show is simple or wish-fulfillment is one I can't abide either.
    SIMPLE
    I wouldn't even say the characters are simple- what they are is uncomplicated. Superman is a guy who sees someone in trouble and wants to help them, Lois is a gal who sees someone hiding something and wants to make the truth known to the people who have a right to know it, Jimmy is a guy that sees things he can't explain and chooses to believe in unconventional explanations and find his own answers. The motivations are simple, but they make for consistent and strong characters, who still have a lot of complexity- Clark is struggling with the fact that he doesn't understand his identity and a lot of the problems he's found himself facing recently are bigger than he's currently equipped to deal with. Lois is grappling with how to trust Clark after finding out he was keeping his identity from her and she constantly finds herself in trouble trying to do the job she believes in, she doesn't fully know what her role should be yet, and her journey to find that is her story arc. Jimmy is struggling with how to reconcile his conspiracy theory loving brain with the mainstream world he lives in and the mainstream job he has, and is contemplating his friendship with Lois and Clark as they get closer and drift away from him.
    The plot isn't simple either, so far we have Deathstroke as an agent of Cadmus, Cadmus having beef with Superman but Eiling being conflicted seeing the good he's doing, Intergang is starting to pick up steam and while Cadmus is onto them, they don't quite have a handle on them, plus Intergang means Apokolips is gonna get involved, all the mystery box Krypton stuff means Braniac is probably gonna get involved, it's all building up a lot of intriguing storylines.
    WISH FULFILLMENT
    I don't even know where to start with this one- is it wish fulfillment that two sensible mature good looking adults like each other and discuss their feelings in a mature way that doesn't unnecessarily complicate their lives? If so that's a really sad wish and I hope your life gets better. Is it wish fulfillment that Superman gets to do good and his efforts to help people are actually successful? Because again, super pessimistic worldview man, very dark. This is just a normal story about normal people doing normal superhero shenanigans

    I think the main reason i dont get into superhero type stories often is that they dont have much besides the origin story or face offs to consider. The plots of most superhero media is often not that good and mainly consists of schemeing from the villains. For stories to hold my attention in the genre it always needed something else, this is why Spider Man was and still is my favorite superhero, second to Iron Man. Because they are majorly faceted and human characters. Superman never appelaed to me but that was also cause i dont like DC and its extreme edgy universe where everyone just makes shitty decisions, and Superman was just not as interesting vs the other options. Spider Man was more relateable and had a younger angle which was closer to my age, and showed more of the actual person side of the superhero besides just the whole hero stuff. Iron Man was a man who created his own abilities but was never a powered being and in that was he was much more interesting especially with his amazing personality and being not the usual good intentioned citizen who wants to help those in need. He is many allegories on his own
    This is why i actually tried to make a superhero type story a long time ago that broke out of that rut where Heros and Villains were just good and bad, and people couldn't die or usually didnt have much in yerms of complicated relationships and issues outside of their alter ego, or having serious conflicts with their enemies and allies that isnt just punch first ask questions later. It made me also realize that superhero stories almost never have an overarching plot in general. That missing element is usually overshadowed by the grandeur of the action or other things, but i think we finally got some movies who evplved past this and those are the spiderverse movies. I have only seen the 1st one but the 2nd looks a lot like its even better and boasts a lot of things that havent been able to shine in supehero genre media in a long time. Yes i dont include comics in this discussion, i have not read them and only know a few vague things about them so im mainly talking about films and tv shows.
    I think its finally time we got superhero and villain stories that arent just origin stories too. While Marvel has made a few good ones they're definitely floundering and have been for a while. The recent Spiderman was one of the best in a while and its not a spectacular movie even though its good, which is worrying.

    Superman is NOT ' weak to magic'. I'm tired of people saying this. He is VULNERABLE to magic & has good resistance to it. If he was weak to magic, he wouldn't be able to tank powerful magic he does a lot (Shazam, Black Adam, Dr. Fate, Zatanna, etc), at all. Lost or not... He wouldn't be able to take little of the magic from DCs character tied for the 2nd strongest, aka Lucifer Morningstar (with his brother Michael Demiurgos being the other tied for 2nd). 1st is obviously The Presence (DCs god).

    Nah, I really disagree with the first point. Superman is already feeling a lot of pain in this one and it should really just be toned down as his powers develop and he gets more control of them, along with experience in fighting, and then come back when a major villain shows up with a level of power we haven't seen before. Depending on how stronger the villain is, or if kryptonite is employed, *maybe* he should feel the level of pain you're looking for. They could also make his development really slow but keep making the enemies stronger, justifying all the pain without breaking the "power scaling" (using that term leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Please, I'm no internet power scaler, typing this from my mother's basement lol).
    In any case, making him howl in pain and cry around from every weak sauce that shows up is absolutely a no-go since it will be, at least a far as I'm concerned, just annoying and undermining to his character. Right now, the only one that I'd see really hurting him would be the Krypton-tech-enhanced Deathstroke and maybe an army of those giant robots, but this growth has been pretty fast and that can change soon, if it doesn't slow down. I'd honestly only save the really major displays of hurt for kryptonite, unless something crazy shows up while he's still a newbie, like a bad kryptonian...

      I agree that episode 5 made Supes get hurt in the way I wanted 😈. I also agree that the pain should be toned down as he gains experience.
      But I still do think that within his first fights (the robots and against intergang), he was getting disoriented, but I still wanted a little more emphasis on the fear and shock of combat. I wanted the reality and pain of fighting to scare him more rather than him just getting back and immediately catching a punch (intergang). The dude starts as a gentle giant, so hurting and getting hurt should be new. He might be invincible, but fighting and the mentality of combat is still new to him. Those were his first fights in the series, so there was more leeway to make him much weaker to show his struggle into becoming a pro hero.
      But still overall, I think the series has done a good job with the pain.

      @@detremis I see, I guess what I feared is true -- you were mostly just being humorous in the way you expressed yourself in the video, but I took it too seriously and though you wanted something like, say, what we see with DBZ characters, who seem to take a punch and then scream for 10 seconds as if somebody is cutting their limbs off with a hacksaw lol. I could not disagree more about the whole "let Superman feel pain" thing. Superman is a story about how having immense power and being, in that power, separated from humanity, he doesn't feel their pain, he doesn't share their weaknesses, and that gives him a responsibility to them. The fact that he can be above it all puts him in the unique position to take on problems that seem above it all. Superman needs to be able to relate to human suffering without experiencing most of it himself, that's one of the most consistently interesting aspects of the Superman character. The more pain you make him feel the less interesting his character is.

    • @detremis
      @detremis  Před rokem +1

      I really like this dissenting opinion.
      Though the only issue is that Supes is “human first” then alien.
      A core part of his character is that he relates to humans since he was human first.
      He was raised human and might have already experienced some human physical pain when he was young. Usually he develops powers during his teen years. That’s another wrinkle I/we should consider.
      But yeah, the idea of being able to relate to human suffering despite not always experiencing it is relatively unique to Supes. I like your take!
      Extra:
      I still like the idea of making his first fights more of a reality shock that he has to get used to. I wanted the choice for him to be a hero a much harder one where his pain and instinct tell him to run away. Then when he’s older, more experienced, and no longer really experiences pain (except against other heavy hitters), he has to make sure he can still relate to human limitation.
