refreshing to watch a guy who knows his stuff but doesn't get a big head about it. Informative, concise, and to the point. Well done and thank you for explaining this in a way that a novice can understand!
I used to work for a lumber and hardware store and sold a thousand of these Swanson Speed squares!!! I never learned how to use one until watching your videos. Thanks for the great tips, Paul.
I just love the way you talk it's easy understanding you NOT LIKE THE OTHER GUY'S try to teach people that don't know how to use a speed square you make it a lot easier to understand thanks again Paul you're awesome.
I have a couple of speed squares, but I simply used the to make square cuts. I had no idea there was so much information on them. Thank you very much for the instruction. You made it simple.
Thanks Paul. I just started watching your videos because they are easy to follow for beginners. I do not have a lot of power tools or tools at all for that matter. Believe it or not I'm 60 years old and never took the time to have a hobby. I regret it often, so now I'm getting ready to do some simple projects that keep me busy and hopefully can bring enjoyment to others. Thanks Again.
This was a fantastic tutorial on the speed square ! Excellent work, great pace and explained well ! It's never wrong to slightly over explain and repeat yourself - it helps to learn and reminds one of the basics as the video moves along ! A++++
I really enjoyed your two tapes, on the speed square. You are very clear in your instructions and concise. At 68 I am finally learning how to use the speed square. Keep up the good work and keep loving America, VHM
Great Video! I'm a cabinet Engineer in California. I been building cabinets for 20 years and never truly knew how to use one. Thanks for all the helpful info. Keep up the great job!
Paul - I really appreciate your heart to help people and teach them the things you have learned over the years. I recently refinished all of my kitchen cabinets using your tips - sanded, primed (that spray can primer was amazing!), painted and finished with the Deft spray lacquer. Thank you so much - I must have watched those videos 10x each to get it just right!
Thanks Paul, your instruction is the easiest on CZcams to understand because, your building at the same time. Starting my first backyard shed build and the knowledge has given me faster and correct building methods to cut down on trial and error. Looking forward to learning more with you. Thank you!
Great video Paul. When I learned framing in the 70's with my dad who was a home builder, I always wondered what the speed square was for. He would rarely use it except to square up lineal. He only used his framing square to layout rafters and stair treads. In the 90's the speed square was never far from my hands on layouts...
man thank you for these videos me I'm a young Carpenter done a little bit of everything but grew up doing floors hanging metal studs hanging and taping drywall over the past 4 years I've done a lot of decks and roofs is inside in with a good boss but all your little tricks and everything else put all together and it is very useful
I've never done any framing but am getting ready to build a small shed and your video has helped me understand something I was worried about getting right. Thank you for such a well done, easy to understand video on the Speed Square. I'm looking forward to watching and learning more of your videos. Thanks Paul - well done.
Always good to see videos on how to use tools. Took me a long time back in the day to learn all the tricks of the speed square. Man, if we would have had CZcams back in our early years of getting started in life in our building professions, we all could have been faster, better, more informed. Thanks Paul for making these videos for those who do not understand how to use the tools of our trade. Keep it all up. You are doing a great service brother.
I learned from the last video how to get the angle for some handrails using the speed square from you. It was right on. I used a string and socket on the end for the plumb bob. Who knew? Thank you. I was sweating it cutting the top rail that costs $50 for each trex board.
Thanks, for the great Video! Your a great instructor. Your small scale visual helped a ton. I always found it hard to grasp when it was a large scale rafter.
Wow Pual thank your for all these tutorials! I'll be building a tiny house from scratch soon. The tutorials you give are life saving when planning, to make things faster, easier, and saves me from making simple inexperienced mistakes. Thank You so much!
yeah i made gambrel rafters with the typical 5/12 pitch. I used trigonometry along with a framing square to do layout. I don't mind the speed square but i always preferred the framing square honestly especially using stair gauges for consistency.
Great video Paul....Have been using a speed square for years, but you have shown me things that I didn't know about it. Will definitely use these tips in the future. Thanks!
Thank you. I was shown this before by my dad. But being young and supposedly knowing it all I said sure. NOW IT MAKES A WHOLE LIY IF SENSE. even more now cause I use it often. Thanks again. You make it simple.
Hooked on your videos.Came across your channel the other week and loved it. Look forward to all your posts,. As a complete novice I've learned loads. Gotta agree with Robert Hardy ; I bought a speed square and with your help I can use it correctly now. Keep the videos coming.
Thanks for this video! I will be building a gable roof over a deck sometime in the future and needed to know how to cut the roof rafters! Perfect!! I have watched many of your other vids, thanks for all your expertise!
fantastic video. I've only ever used a square for as a straight edge and saw guide. There is a lot more to that little guy then meets the eye. that Swanson looks like a upgrade from my plastic orange one. Lol. thanks for the tips
Hey Paul. Hi from Canada. So thanks for the Great SPEED SQUARE videos . It's good to have a refresher course. If you don't mind, Please enter me for a speed square and booklet. Please keep the videos coming , I like the NO babbling bullshit, that a lot of videos out there that seem to be made just to hear themselves yap. It's OBVIOUS you have worked in the trade. So thanks for passing off your knowledge to us.
WOW!! another great video always full of helpful information Thank You!! My current project is handicap ramps with a 1/12 pitch which is code in most areas for wheelchairs.
Thank you for your videos Paul. they have been really useful. I actually built a gate for my fence using your video ad a guide. it doesn't look as good as yours, but you could swing an elephant from it...
My name is Alfredo pizarro and I have been carpenter for more than thirty years that does not mean that I know everything I always watch these videos to gain some extra now how and I must say this fellow Paul does an great job on instructing you I can tell that this guy Paul knows what he is talking about it's a pleasure to see his how to videos thanks Paul
Hi Jesse, Thanks for the compliment. I try to make sure I explain the detail that people need to finish their projects successfully. I do have plans for some new videos soon. Please subscribe and hit the bell for notifications. Also check out my websitewww.paulsttoolbox.com Have a great day! Paul
Thank you very much for sharing your wisdom. I am still not very sure of the three methods of cutting the bird's mouth, although I watched your video three times. God bless. James
I grew up working with hand tools and power tools. I never actually learned how to use a speed square though nor did I ever give it much thought. Definitely an under valued tool, and one I'll start making more use of.
Hi Paul, always watch your Videos! The last two I found very interesting and I learnt more from you, as a joiner my self I found your way alot easier the way you explained. Thank you for your Videos I watch them all the time!!!
These two videos have been the most informative information I have ever seen on speed squares. I am a recent subscriber and have learned more from you in a short time about basic carpentry and cabinetry than from any person I have followed on CZcams. I would love to have a Swanson Square and booklet. Also, where can I find a tape rule that has the numbers on both sides. The manufacturer name or source of the tape measure would not only help me but also many others in getting that tool. Again, as I said earlier, I have learned a great deal from you in a short time because you share things in a way that makes since.
thank you paul for the videos ive watched them all , and ive learned something from each one ,keep up the good work because your helping alot of people
I have to see stuff to learn it. You show it very well. Loved your other video too. BTW, since you showed how to use the Swanson book, now I can use it.
66 years old and enjoyed learning from your video on how to use the speed square. Never to old to learn !

Excellent video, the Swanson book is good but actually seeing how the square is used just makes life easier.
Informative, helpful and very well presented! Been using Swanson's Speed square since 1990 and still learning, so thanks!
Thanks, for the great Video! Your a great instructor. Your small scale visual helped a ton. I always found it hard to grasp when it was a large scale rafter.
Nice! Thanks for the information! I've been wanting to build my own shed. This will definitely help me with the project. Keep up the great work!
