    I’m sure if you gave Rutten the choice he still would have preferred to coach the last game against Richmond even if he knew he was to be sacked.
    Rutten was clear on his intent to continue coaching as he was invested in the list and going by the character he showed during the week I think he would have seen it through.
    The media had been shitting on Rutten all year and now they feel sorry? Nah they just want a story.

  • @StuTheDon17
    @StuTheDon17 Pƙed 2 lety +16

    It's hard to argue with anything Slobbo said there.
    Yes, the timing of sacking Rutten was wrong and it was a bad look for the club, but he has been extremely poor this season and deserved to be sacked.
    If you've ever played footy before, you can just imagine how bad of a coach he was this year that the players had to get him to change the game plan. It was either too difficult and confusing for the squad they had, or the game plan didn't work.
    Either way, that is unheard of at AFL level and is an absolute embarrassment.
    Essendon could not risk another horrific season in 2023, so they made the right decision over Rutten. It was just handled poorly.
    And the board members need to remember they work for the club. They aren't the club.
    If they're not going to get behind the new direction the club is going, then quit.
    Those weasels resemble politicians in Canberra more than they do board members of an AFL club.

      @FullMontyGaming Pƙed 2 lety +2

      Correct on the game plan analysis,
      example - the media thrashed him for not using a tagger in the first 6 games, when it was an obvious need and before mid-season the lack of defence was also highlighted and was never amended..
      He needed to go and the leadership squad needs a reshuffle.
      The way they sacked him sucked.

It was utterly disgraceful, and whereas I appreciate it's a ruthless industry with sackings occuring galore and power-shifts etc etc...it was abominable they way they handled it and themselves and then used Ben as the scapegoat...ALLOWED him to coach on Sat and then sacked after Clarko snubbed them for North. Rutten was only in his second year as the senior coach after his apprenticeship with Worsfold. Hardly what you would call an experienced coach. If the Essendon board is to be consistent, they will be expecting a new coach to be having a team into the finals after 2 years if that is, the new coach is relatively a newcomer to the game.
    An experienced coach who has coached at the level previously and served an apprenticeship should be expected to have the side in the finals this time next year.
    With the rabble directing the Club at Board level, I can't see this happening.
    The President sets a selfish example when he states " my daughters 21 and hasn't seen the Club win a grand final" ( or words to that effect). Well sport, quite a few other Clubs haven't won one in the same time.

    They don't have a defensive game.They don't pressure their opponents.They are not competitve.In the last three weeks, Richmond, Port Adelaide and G.W.S. thrashed them.None of which are top six sides.Somebody has to take responsibility.The Bombers need a new coach.What is the big deal?He saw the season out.He had a chance to save his job.Some clubs don't give their coach that chance.They sack them mid season.All year the media have speculated Essendon was in the running for Clarko's services and when they finally made a move (all be it too late) the same journalists are attacking them.Give me a break.Essendon did not finish on the bottom.They have a good list.They just a decent coach.

    I don't know why Essendon think it's a coaching issue when they seem to have primarily invested in the draft the last couple of years and failed to bring in major trade targets like josh dunkley due to not paying up on demands of the other club. If your not bringing in the talent then you need to wait for the current talent to develop which requires both a coach and time.

      People keep saying "he got you to finals last year". No. We fell into 8th spot and got gifted a final. 8th means almost nothing. It would have meant something for say Carlton if they had made it this year but only because it's been so long. Hopping in and out of 8th and piss poor elim finals is nothing. No team has ever done anything from 8th, it exists to give the all mighty broadcaster an extra final not as a reward for being just ok. All it got them was a harder draw and the chance for Rutten to prove we hadn't improved one little bit in the 3 years, not 1, 3 years he's been in charge. Maybe that was too short a time but the club has been on this road now for nearly 20 years. I too thought he was treated shamefully in that last week but it was time to go.

      Richmond lost by 120 points in the last round of 2016.
      BOTH those clubs could have used the old "we were uncompetitive in several games" excuse but they didn't. They realized that there is more to a football club than just the coach and they backed the coach.
      And when Barham settles on a fix (relying on an external review ... no wait, get in Clarko ... ah, let's go back to the external review ... no wait, we have to concurrently look for a coach while the review takes place) maybe he'll get the benefit of the doubt.

      This is nothing new messydon has always been ruthless and arrogant. It hurts them not being competitive for at least 20 years. The suffering continues.

    16 Premierships for Essendon...the most successful footy team (with Carlton) ever.
    When its time to show leadership they have always faced up..and won.
    Only the voice vultures are picking...but they haven't won 16 premierships.

    "If you don't believe what they're doing, get out and they'll get people in who are on the same page."
    What exactly is that plan again?
    Doing an external review. Oh wait, that doesn't matter because we can get Clarkson. Oh wait, that's idiotic, let's do the external review. Oh wait, we can't wait for the review to be complete so we have to do an external review simultaneously.
    When Barham sticks to a plan for more than five minutes, then others could maybe follow.
