  • At long last, a project I have wanting to do since 2017 is finally here...the story of the rise and fall of the Lochty Private Railway. For those who don't know, this is the story of the first heritage railway in Scotland regarding it's history, who were there, it's final demise and where they have all gone now.
Also see rare footage of Union of South Africa working in 1967 and life in the Kingdom of Fife during simpler and happier times.
Many of the stock now reside on the Fife Heritage Railway in Leven and you can find more information on it's website here: www.fifeheritagerailway.co.uk/
Lastly, I want to thank many people who helped with this project regarding photos, film and other information that otherwise would never had been possible to have made this documentary and here's hoping that Fife railway heritage will go on from strength to strength. Enjoy this wee documentary!

This is really interesting, I actually visited Lochty a few times with my Uncle as a young kid as he helped out there for a few years. This video Brought back some really good memories. Outstanding stuff Mr QTX.

QTXAdsy Good evening I found the film to be very comprehensive. The music and images were emotional and nostalgic. I am 61 and with pocket money bought Railway Magazine from about 1968 onwards as a wean. I remember seeing the A4 in a pic in RM. I asked my dad if we could go, he was a Glasgow tram and clyde Steamer authority but was not as up on trains as me. He sought advice from his railway boffin academic friend. Who said it was not worthwhile travelling so far for such a short and stupid venture. Boo Hoo,LOL. Never got there ,so your film is part of a missed childhood,at a sensible level. I am a bit hacked off at the big Heritage Lines . I joined my first railway society recently,Doon Valley Railway. I will be coming to Fife.Nothing adverse about this production. Thanks again.

@@julianturdfellow7168 Thank you, at Kirkland there are many who were there at Lochty who have many tales to tell when you do visit. Only a shame that Mr Cameron won't consider letting No.9 and Great Marquess come to our yard to stay as he wants them kept in Fife.

That was part of my maintenance section from East Fife Central to the Lochty station

Nicely done, a learnt a few things there that I didn't know, I used to live in Kennoway and volunteered at Kirkland, often cycled along the old trackbed before I moved away.

It's great to have found this. As a 14 or 15 year old kid in about 1983 or 84 I was privileged to get a footplate ride on the Austerity at Lochty on my only visit to the site. Is the Austerity still around? The video doesn't mention where it went after Lochty was closed.

You mean No.16? It went to Brechin after Lochty closed and has remained there ever since though has been just rusting away for many years now. Would be nice if it returned to Fife in the near future.

The Bamy pug aka BAC No 1, was a bad steamer, doubtful she would have pulled the carriages up from Lochty, or was the steaming rectified, ask Westy about the bucket with the fan on the places on the chimney to help getting the pug in steam !

That’s not as I remember it,there were 2 lines a ground frame with 4 lever a building a telephone connected to the signal box east Fife central signal box which controlled the branch and the shunting yard.
