    About 25% of our video requests come from weldors that have a test THE NEXT DAY and want us to make a video to help them. Of that 25% about half are asking about 6G pipe.
    First, if you have a weld test tomorrow and you're just trying to get help now; you're in trouble.
    Now, for those who still have some time to practice, but don't have access to pipe here is a way you can get some arc time in. This also works for people that haven't yet ventured into 6G and want to practice on something that is easy to reset and try again.
    Bevel up some plate and put it on a 45 degree angle. practice making stringers in the plate until you get good. After you're confident in your abilities, you can angle the plate back towards you and this will simulate the 6:00 to 3:00 position of pipe.

    Love the banter, Mr. Moffatt. Your videos are very informative, and usually quite funny. I like how you poke fun at yourself and all around you. That's a sign of a TRUE welder. I also want to thank your boy for his service to this country, and to thank you as well for your service to this trade.

    Thank you Bob Moffett you are so great! I've been teaching welding for years and now I'm going back to TIG welding which I have been away from for a few years and it's quite challenging and ungrateful for all the tips that you and the great welding teachers and welders give all of us on CZcams!

    Hi Bob,
    Another excellent video, your comments on students doing a test having done no prep does not surprise me. And welding, like most manual skills, comes with learning the basics and then practice.
    I can also relate to your comments on the effects of age and losing that steady hand. I'm older than you, and the eyesight also doesn't cooperate and having bifocals regularly find the split line right where I'm welding and can't see a thing! Old age is not something to look forward to. The body doesn't always like getting into some of those awkward positions either.
    Best wishes, Dennis

    Thanks Bob for another great video. As a pipe welder who passed ALOT of tests over the years, I learned to run a root pass and (over the years)weave out to my cap stringers. No matter what the position. From 2" to 3" pipe. Anything over that, stringers.

    When I was in welding school they told us to 1) whip and pause on the root, rather than a straight stringer. And 2) grind the rough of the 6010 root and run a 7018 as a hot pass that way, rather than the 6010 like you do.
    Does one method have any advantage/disadvantage vs the other or is it personal preference?

And also, he has a second or third man on the fume extractor, another thing people in the field will not have the luxury of. I guess it boils down to, just practice. Definitely helpful tips for that.

    If you're not draging your stick on that 3rd pass, how do you know you are holding it say 1/8" up as you move? Is it the size of the arc? I am in tech school, 1st semester, and do not know how to tell my arc length or even know what to look for. Also, your root pass, are you draging the 6010 or holding it up slightly?

    • @MiguelMoreno-sg9bj
      @MiguelMoreno-sg9bj Před 6 lety +1

      It comes with practice and muscle memory. But u can never go wrong with a tight arc length if you’re loosing arc. After the rod is hot and running you can push the rod into the metal without it sticking.

    Bob, I started on 1G with an open back but I can’t seem to get a good root pass without whipping the bead in. I see that when you run your root, you have hardly any movement, if any movement at all. What would you suggest I do differently? Running 6010 1/8” rod at around 75 amps and about a 1/4 of arc strength.

    • @126inasplit
      @126inasplit Před 6 lety

      Bob Moffatt I don’t have a piece in front of me but I’d guess around a 1/4-3/8 root face. The gap is 3/32

    • @bobmoffatt4133
      @bobmoffatt4133 Před 6 lety

      Chris Harrell Plate is 3/8. If you had a 1/4 root face you essentially have no bevel left. And at that gap, you'd have to run way hot or you won't get penetration.

    • @bobmoffatt4133
      @bobmoffatt4133 Před 6 lety

      Bob Moffatt well, I’m sure I’m wrong on the root face. Lol! I can get a fairly consistent bead on the back side for the most part, aside from tying in. I just can’t seem to get it to work without whipping it in. I only have class two days a week and it’s a class more for the hobbyist than it is an actual class. I’ll get more information tomorrow and get back with you on it.
