    My 88 year old Nan is just like this and even sounds like her. I saw the live tour of this show and she told a 12 year old in the audience that they were too young for this f**king language 😂😂. React to Mrs browns boys it’s pretty much the Irish version of this, my favourite scene in the show is when her family talk about putting her dog in an home and she thinks she’s talking about putting her into a care home.

    @ansionnachbeagrioga5260 Před 3 lety +3

    The stereotype about the Scots is the same as the Irish. That we're all violent drunks. It's half true. We Gaelic folk do drink a lot, probably because we live in a part of the world where it's frequently cold and wet and the best way to weather the darker colder wetter months is to join good company in a cozy bar and drink liquor that'll warm the the blood. But we don't all start beating the shit out of each other once we're drunk. I mean there are rough parts of Scotland and Ireland. But only a small few. The vast majority of Gaelic people are very friendly and can hold their liquor.

    Sadly Catherine Tate is making fun of a number of sterotypes some people do have about Scots. It is nice however the joke here is people who hold these views, and the Scottish woman isn't playing on them.
    In the 90s my mother a few years ago went to England on a business trip and was told by several people, "You're English is so good, where did you learn it?" Aparently there had actually been discussions among the people she was visiting about whether they would need to hire a translator for her.
    My dad also lived in London for a time during the 80s and was constantly challenged to fights by people who assumed because he was Scottish he must be a natural born MMA prize fighter and it would prove something to their friends to beat him in a fight. He's 5'8" and built like a beanpole.
    That said the same sterotyoes exist in USA media too - Grounds Keeper Willy from the Simspons, The Scotsman from Samurai Jack. The Scottish Pokemon trainer meme. Merida in Wreck it Ralph 2.
    The drinking is an annoying sterotype, certainly for those of us who don't drink that much/if ever, but sadly has some truth behind it. Scotland and England both consume more alcohol than most European countries in terms of units. And Scotland does have a higher death count than England for alcohol related deaths. So clearly there are Scots who drink way too much and into an early grave. On the west coast of Scotland there is an annoying culturual trend some adhere to that if you are at a social gathering and aren't drinking you arn't having fun. I've been to plenty of nights out where I'm only ordering soft drinks or perhaps one cider which I make last the night, and my co-workers and friends have started claiming I'm a party-pooper or not enjoying myself because I'm not on my 5th beer yet. I've even had people who've bought the rounds spike my coke with shots of vodka.
    I once went to an xmas night out where the collective drinks bill was £15 per person (that's about the cost of an entire bottle of wine). I refused to pay as I'd only had water, and I was called a liar by a number of people who assumed I must have been drinking as much as they had.
    So, no, not all Scots drink. Certainly not all the time. But there is clearly a good number of people here who do have an unhealthy relationship with alcohol, and when at social events get offended if other people aren't drinking as much as they are and will try and pressure them into drinking just as much.

    Nobody else is going to say it but yes, the stereotype of Scottish people is they drink a lot. Stereotypes always contain a grain of truth.

    My grandad would say some horrendous things. To listen to you'd think he was racist, which he actually wasn't. Homophobic definitely.

    Special brew and heroin are the two main imports of Scotland. Are they drunk all the time, they deep fry Mars bars in batter, no one sober thought of that? Old people don't care, they have realised stereo typing whilst not totally accurate, is actually the best way to go through life and its nice when you meet people who don't fit it. If you go in thinking everyone is great, you're bound to end up disappointed. Where as if you stereo type the people you meet, you some times come away happy and surprised. We tell our kids the type of people to not go with or hang around with, stereo typing is fine then. Oh dear that's an opinion, I'll lose points for that.
