2017 Volvo V90 R-Design T6 AWD Review

  • So many companies seem to be dropping wagons from their lineups in favor of more crossovers, so it's refreshing to get into a proper wagon that lives up to all the clichés we longroof aficionados use to defend them: The 2017 Volvo V90 looks better, drives better, carries just as much stuff.
    Granted, I did happen to benefit from getting into the hottest V90 trim you can get, and it's made even hotter by the Polestar performance upgrade we sampled.

    That car could use the old inline 6. I worry long term about an overboosted 4 cylinder pulling a 4200lb car

    Test drove a T5 R design, it's still in my garage, in fact.
    1. Power is actually not bad.
    2. HORRIBLE effect when accelerating, even on expressways. Pulls the wheel, but not in a fun "torque steer way". And turning into traffic from a stop, the wheel is so light it's almost dangerous.
    3. Very light steering, even on dynamic. Makes our S60 R design's numb steering feel like a Porsche in comparison.
    4. Even on Dynamic,plenty of body motion in turns, though lean is not bad. Just not a buttoned down feel at all.
    5. Seats are best I've ever sat in. The thigh extension is great.
    6. Not very sporty, looks way cooler than it drives.
    7. Legroom excellent.
    8. Cargo area is 7" longer than our BMW X5. Width is the same, and opening height is only 4" lower. It is bigger than the specs would indicate.
    9. It is LONG. It fills the garage pretty well.
    10. The Sensus is not laggy anymore.
    11. However, it is still not that intuitive, and even after a few hours with it I get lost at times.
    12. The single most surprising thing was that the B/W sound system, at over $3,000, is good but hardly great. I ran it side by side with an X5 base unit and the S60 R design's Platinum stereo, and I like the other two every bit as much. I played with sub, tone, and equalizer settings and it got better, but nothing mind-blowing like the price would indicate.
    13. Pretty quiet, ride is fine. Nothing harsh.
    14. The lane keeping and cruise work fine, but it did false alarm an audible alert and big red "STOP" warning despite no car turning in front of me once.
    15. It had $11,000 of pretty much worthless to me options on it, which is part of Volvo's problem when they try to sell wagons here. It was $63,000
    16. The engine is grainy, but not a big deal.
    17. The transmission is better in dynamic mode but slow to gear down and go from a rolling start.
    A T6 awd might help, but at $6,000 more it's overpriced for the level of driving fun here. For that price you can get fast, great handling, and fun elsewhere.

    I am looking for a 2018 V90R now in Dec 2022 and hope to find a 1 owner well maintained vehicle. I own a 2006 Volvo V70R 140K miles and will drive this until it hits 250K or unless it become unreliable and/or has to many expensive repairs. I like the Mercedes E series wagons too. That was my favorite wagon prior to the V70R. Either will work. The used prices are coming down and fortunately wagons are not highly desired in this country. I would take one over a SUV any day of the week. My V70R has more cargo room with the back seats up than my wife's 2017 MBZ GLC300 4matic.

  • @brucec43
    @brucec43 Před 7 lety +2

    $60-$70K. Man, you'd better need the extra space. Because a Polestar V60 would be $60K plus tax, and will run circles around this.

    • @PJPHughes
      @PJPHughes Před 7 lety +2

      As a '16 V60 Polestar owner, I can tell you it's much smaller inside, the rear seat is useless if the driver is 5'11" or taller, and the tech is very dated. That said, yes, the V60 Polestar is much faster, handles like a sports car, and puts more sport in "sports wagon."

    Volvo really messed up by putting a crappy four banger engine into this beautiful wagon That has the perfect platform for bigger displacement engine , like Audi did on their new RS6 wagon . Like the old saying says THERE'S NO REPLACEMENT FOR DISPLACEMENT , Volvo stop making costly mistakes you not only losing sales but valuable customers by allowing idiots installing crappy engines in this beautiful cars . Just my two cents

      Jonathan needs a loose cannon partner. He's too rigid (by the books) and needs a buddy cop to make his pulling-in-the-reins personality endearing. Seems like an okay guy though. Just doesn't translate in video format.

    In my opinion Volvo killed the brand with the elimination of all but 4 cylinder engines in their lineup.

    • @randomdriver
      @randomdriver Před 7 lety +3

      Yeah, it happened too soon, but that is not a bad since they are moving so fast forward with the technology. In just two years they will only be making hybrids or electric cars. The V90 T8 version is quite fast having 407hp and 4.8 seconds to 62mph and I believe that no additional cylinders could really make it that much better. Only downside in my opinion is the noise what four cylinder engine makes. I love my s80 v8 and the sound of it and plan to keep it for a very long time. I probably will get a second car hybrid or electric Volvo in year or two for daily driver.

      Damian Ross not gonna buy any new volvo ever. And I have been a volvo guy all my life. I am 18 and I already have two 960 wagons one v90 wagon with 600hp (the old one not this) and s60 r awd with 450hp

    • @topi7743
      @topi7743 Před 7 lety +1

      Damian Ross one of the 960 wagons is completely stock expect interior and the other one is just with bigger turbo and intercooler and those are my daily drivers I hope I never have to buy new cars not because I dont have money but because they have no soul. Electrics and hybrids and all that stuff would die before buying one

      I feel ya. the v90 looks damn good though. the xc40 is another story; all the new cars look the same. I miss the straight 5's and v6? from the old school ones(240 etc)

    • @kellypaws
      @kellypaws Před 6 lety +2

      I don't think they've killed it, but they have made it massively less appealing to keen owners. I've has a LOT of Volvos, but mainly because the 5 cylinder was a great engine and really interesting, as well as quick. I'm afraid the 4 cylinder sounds like a complete dog. Anodyne.
