Here's my new daily driver and a V12 engine update! • I Sold My Performance ...
Here's part 2! • First Start Of The Aba...
I bought a former fastest SUV in the world for only $750. It came from an auction and was abandoned for 5 years. In this video, I briefly go over the history of this amazing machine, and then we discover the SUV together. I find some weird stuff inside, we replace a bunch of parts and try to get it started. Enjoy the show!

2003 Dodge Durango 4.7
05 Hyundai Terracan Diesel
1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It ran back in December. Can't get her running now. I think the starter is on it's way out. I put a new battery in last May and replaced the spark plugs. I really would love to get it running soon. I'm gonna need it :(

Alex might be the only guy on CZcams buying cars at salvage auction for a reasonable price! Go Auto Auctions!!!
I'm trying over here but man, cars are expensive right now. Great time to sell!
Auto auction rebuilds???
With the high prices, imagine if you have a field full of cars. Fix them up, sell them and you make good money 👍
@@tuneskramer69 I like you and I chuckled
@@LegitStreetCars curious why you didn't scan with the Autel or the Launch tools to see if there were any other issues that didn't result in a CEL
True story. My wife called me and said the car won't start. I told her to tap the starter with a hammer. She called back and says no start still. I go home and try to start the car but, the ignition switch and keys are beat to a pulp. She said, you told me to hit the starter.
Lmao
🤣😂
My wife knows nothing about cars and she said she knows better then to do that 😂
His dishwasher was slapped around till she was unconscious.
lmao
This was one of your most entertaining videos, Alex. Not gonna kid, I like seeing older/beater/attainable cars getting worked on more than high-end mercedes luxury sedans. But either way, you're fun and document the car-fixing process really well. Keep up the good work!
It's funny I was going along with Alex while in my head thinking of the next steps of what to do. Every time I thought of the next step Alex went ahead and said it. I love these videos, Alex keep up the hustle.
Check the cam and crank signals. I noticed the tach doesn’t move when you crank it over. It is a common failure. And if one is bad, replace both with ONLY mopar parts. Those computers do not like aftermarket parts.
wouldnt have had injector pulse without it
I agree, both of those sensors go bad from time to time and cause issues on otherwise good running ZJs
The gauge cluster could have been messed with as well, tach
if you don't have cam or crank signals you won't have spark or injector pulse
Its not a normal cam sensor. Its a pick up coil. Rarely fail in a jeep. If it does thats because your distributor is shot. No tach signal asd relay curcuit will shut down. No power to coil or fuel pump while cranking. You will have system prime at key on. But will loose asd relay function when it fails to see crank signal.
These crank sensors are super easy to test.
Now you know why the starter was burned up 😂
Your videos are second to none. Full of valuable content. I like the fact that you don't fill your videos with fluff. I have no reason to skip forward and jump through unnecessary nonsense. I find myself watching your videos with curiosity and vicariously live through your videos. Thanks for the entertainment. I enjoy watching your videos each and every time.

Thanks! This means a lot. Appreciate the support!
I love it, a youtuber that actually works for a living and does youtube as a hobby. CZcams is not a career people! I have a 4.0 xj and that engine is bulletproof as well, I can attest to that.
I had diagnosed one of these a few years ago, went through similar symptoms. After several hours of messing with it, on a hunch I had the catalyst unbolted and cranked it over. It fired right up! Previous owner didn’t do the maintenance it needed and it melted the top of the cat, so basically it had no airflow. Hope this helps!
I would think this Jeep has dual exhaust and 2 cats.
@@blueribb99 just single tip exhaust maybe two cats off the header.
I agree
@@lakeportxj nope single cat mounted right in the Y, two inlets one outlet. But he's spitting gas through it, so something is moving. Should at least start an idle.
@@blueribb99 Nope dual headers to a single 3" cat back exhaust.
This will definitely run, if it sat that long, the rings might be a little stuck and when you get it hot they will loosen up and restore compression.
I'm going to guess its a bad timing chain or sprocket like this : czcams.com/video/eXPvquDI_mw/video.html
Sam learning things from his own comment section i see
Yeah cos arsecrac is a shit hot mechanic. The guy can't do anything without someone doing it for him.
Somehow I don't think Alex needs unsolicited mechanical advice from the likes of Samcrac.
He tested the compression and it should start with 100 in each cylinder. I vote for a weak fuel pump.
i hope this car sticks around the channel and gets saved. ive have my 5.9 since 2008
How to lift a Cherokee for extra working clearance when replacing the starter: INFLATE TIRES
This video is like a textbook example in how to diagnose a dead car. Bravo!
I absolutely admire your determination. You work your butt off showing love to these cars that people would normally look passed. And with all the grind you still work a full time job. That’s what I call a true enthusiast
Man, I was so happy to see that silhouette on the thumbnail. Knew instantly by that shape. I've dreamt of having a 98 5.9 zj since I was 10 years old and my mom was looking at used ZJs and we test drove one new. I've always wanted one since then and hope to realize that dream one day, especially a platinum silver one. Take good care of it please! Oh, and research just how many unique parts came on the 5.9 only. Pretty neat how many little things they had on these.
Another great video! I dealt with bad gas in maiden voyage of 38 ft boat with 2 351w yesterday, barely limped into marina. Super helpful and relatable!
Please don't make us wait another week for Part 2!
Judging by the fresh oil on the dipstick- the guy did an oil change but didn't have a pan so just took a garbage bag full of dirt to absorb the oil.
Best explanation so far as to the back yard butchery.
The way it was chuffing and backfiring, the timing is all to hell but as the spark plug weren't changed, it wouldn't explain why the HT leads got all mixed up.
yup. emptied it onto a pile of grass clippings.

Love this kind of video. Reminds me of getting an old C4 corvette running after sitting for years. All it needed was a new fuel pump and good fuel before she cranked right up.
Thank you for posting this video, the noid light section helped me diagnose an issue with my Camaro!

4.6 second 0-60. get it in mud and water 4 1/2 deep and it will skip and jump right out of it. but I bet since it was a BLM/ BIA govt vehicle mods were made... I paint it with a special blend of interior house paint and kilz instead of washing it. people always want to but it . idk

I just sold my ZJ after getting sick of its issues. The sounds yours made in this vid triggered my Jeep PTSD lol
at least the guy cleaned up the oil spill. very oddly but at least he cleaned his mess. stay safe!

Might be my favorite video yet! the wipers coming on when you were screwing with the fuses might have been the highlight. :)
I’ll for sure be watching this series. Bought a 98 5.9L as a project last November and its been fun to ride around in.
So cool to see you so excited about a 750$ jeep.
That's what l love on this channel :D
same here.
Good luck! I’d rather watch someone fix something like this over a wrecked exotic any day.
Absolutely. The whole ‘wrecked exotic’ thing is over.
Same. Nobody I know owns real expensive car. This is the type of stuff I work on and what I wanna learn about.

*Typhoon* has entered the chat.
Next video: drumbeats wen the city mistakes the Jeep for an abandoned vehicle and gets towed.
Pretty sure typhoon has It beat
Yes the typhoon was way faster
The explorer saleen xp8 was just as fast as this jeep. Maybe faster
My 80 year old neighbor has one but he just moved to Florida for winters. Cleans his golf clubs after every use. You know he does the same with his 2 door typhoon.
Haven’t used a hammer on a starter in decades haha. Awesome memories
Gen 1 sbc issues....I kept a nice boulder on the floorboard thru highschool, and a framing hammer after just for these problems

Great to see some exciting content back on this channel. Rock on Alex!

You should check fuel system, clean fuel lines, replace the fuel pump and injectors
Clean the interior and reupholster the seats, remove carpeting and clean or replace it

Awesome, you're living the dream! Well done.
Hey man, love your videos. I daily drive an immaculate ‘95 grand Cherokee limited with the 5.2 with 181k miles. I had the same issue, crank and no start. I replaced the crankshaft position sensor under the distributor and I’ve never had an issue since. Hope this helps!
Yes.... Love the budget series.... ❤️❤️
Love the channel!!! Keep it up
Love this!!! It's perfect viewing material whilst I am pushing out dinner
Those Magnums don’t like to start when the battery is low. The idle circuit uses battery voltage as a reference and it won’t want to start without giving it some pedal until it starts running and then it’ll get smart and start to idle.
In addition to the firing order, check the fuel filter. These have an external filter. If the plugs are original, I’ll bet that thing hasn’t been changed.
Jeeps an dodge's of this vintage don't have inline fuel filters. Only the sock on the end of the pump.
But he sprayed in starting fluid..... Should start even if there is no fuel at all!
@@eldonerc2524 I completely forgot. Starting in 1997, ZJs got the integrated fuel pump/filter. Prior to that, it was in-line and external. I remember changing mine every 30K or so, along with the spark plugs.
@@ssn608 It sounded like it fired for a split second with the starting fluid. But the fuel smell coming out of the tailpipe means unburned fuel. Could be as simple as incorrect firing order.
Every video you post keeps getting better and better.
Really nice efforts bro. Congrats...
The 9er is awesome!
I've always dreamed of owning one of these. A fully loaded, 1998, jeep grand Cherokee limited with the 5.9 magnum. Thats awesome you got one for $750. I love those things. Thats my dream car right there. I cant wait to see how you transform it into something awesome
Gotta see it fire up! Keep going and look forward to the next video!
Cant wait for part 2 !!!!!
Thats crazy 240hp from a 5.9 v8 😂
Yup. Everything was still hampered by emissions during the 90s, slowly but surely improving.
There is a product called "Start U Bastard".I'm sure we all could have used that at some point.

My 5.0L Mustang sat for 12 years in a garage. I bought a new battery and we started it with the old gasoline and it started on one cylinder and then finally on all. It has a carburetor. We never got rid of the old fuel, just added new and everything was good. Thanks....Jim
Very cool to watch..i always had a spot for those 5 9s, 💪🏾just the absurdity of the engine size is great. Youve come to far now, it MUST start no turning back.
Oh shoot. Didn’t know those had heated seats haha. That’s neat.

Alex , this is the type of content that will build your channel. The excitement was infectious, and I found myself rooting for the start it’s probably something stupid. 360/318 are damn near indestructible. Now w all have to wait an entire week plus to figure out what it is.
I had a 1997 jeep grand cherokee limited with the 4.0 a few months ago that i picked up for $480 with only 125k miles, running and driving. Replaced the o2 sensor and computer and it ran perfect, the zj grand cherokee is one of the best jeeps you can buy for the money and in my opinion the last of the og jeeps next to the cherokee
Just picked one up for 1200$, a White one with additional couple options that were available, including the sunroof. Needs carpet, headliner and a small hole around the driver seat outer bolt. It is being delivered April 22'nd and I can't wait. Your video was inspiration to get one,.. I remember driving them new in 1998 when I worked for Jeep. Took 24 years but I have one to add to my other Jeeps. It's a Jeep thing, I know you all understand!
