Many mechanics tried but no one could get this Lexus to start. It was abandoned and the owner was fed up and said if I can get it to start it I could keep it for free! I started down the path of diagnosis and figured it out with just a paper clip! There's a lot more to this series so I hope you enjoy this one and the videos to come on fixing everything else.

This was a really cool and interesting demo of your knowledge and the way you work the debugging framework. New subscriber
Thoroughly enjoyed the video. I would suggest that you might need to put some heat shrink over the exposed output connections of your DC to DC battery charger to avoid the risk of possibly shorting it out and damaging the unit. Keep up the good work and stay safe.
I'm about 97% sure the car is just in "load shed" mode. The alternator isn't doing its job, the PCM is probably in a low voltage mode and is working with the SOLE priority of keeping the engine running, meaning it's probably not running power steering and forcing idle only, because all the power is going to powering the coils and the fuel injectors, and of course its greedy self. Happened to my c300 when the alternator died.
Great tip!
Okay so this comment sort of blew up, I gotta edit it to make it make more sense.
Did it turn on immediately? Or was there no turn. I have a 2012 c250 and it doesn’t turn on, we have to mess w the starter relay. And boom it turns on. But we have lots of faults similar to yours.
Yup and this generation IS it notorious for premature failing alternators!
@@sebaj8386 it turned on just fine, the battery was at like 9 volts after 2 minutes and the entire dash was lit up like a Christmas tree.
Awesome! Lexus time! Alex check the ALT fuse which is the main fuse possibly blown( can’t remove it it’s bolted down inside the fuse block) The throttle might be a ECTS fuse which is common to go when the battery dies. This engine is notorious for carbon build up on the intake which is likely on this one if it hasn’t been cleaned before. Good luck!
Thanks!!
A fuse that can't be removed/replaced!?
@@bobkilla430 i believes it has to be unbolt and requires the whole fuse box to be removed
@@raymondlong99 ok thanks

What I learned: Toyotas are great reliable cars as long as u drive em and don’t let em sit lol
Any car that sits for that long will run like crap
Thats for cars in general, theyre made to run and get messed up if you let them sit for a while
My parents have a 2010 Toyota Avanza, they bought it back in 2010, still works perfectly
A 1996 Ford F350 7.3 owned by our company sat for 9 years in the company parking lot. We decided to get rid off the vehicle; replaced both the batteries and it started like we parked it just yesterday.
@@Tyshkevich How long is long? I store my winter vehicle outside all spring until fall for about 7 months of the year. I don't even hook up a tender or remove the battery and it starts and runs just fine every time. Been doing it for 4 years. I use so much air fresheners that mice stay away too, I just usually get spider webs in the cab. Also tons of debris and tree sap and leaves but that's nothing a good wash won't fix.
He made it look so easy but that just shows how much experience he has with it.
Guy at U-Haul has never heard of a SVT Lightning?!?
What a chump
Or a single cab F150
There is no fix for stupid
Kid behind the counter is probably in his late teens or early twenties... So he either wasn't born yet, or was too young to remember that F-150 lightning.
@@TravisFabel I'm not much older and can remember F150s in that body style from highschool, the Lightning doesn't look that different like RL said it's a single cab F150
Real young guy has no excuse for not giving a quick Google
I live in the UK and even I know what an SVT lightning is…that dude at u haul must be brain dead
When you return the trailer, you should return it with the Lightning
Fuck yes😂
Hell yeah.....and film it.
Bruh please do this 🤣🤣🤣
They might try and charge a fee for that. Instead, tow the Lightning in with the trailer attached to it :P
He would probably get banned from U-Haul if he did that 😂
Your trailer rental experience is the sort of experience that eventually had me buy my own trailer. Of course that's now the convenient excuse to drag all sorts of vehicles home, which is an unpleasant side effect of owning a trailer.
Lol. I work at HD Tool Rental Center. I'll let you tow my heavy ass dump trailer with a tacoma. Come on over lol.
I've been working at a body shop for a bit now and extra tips I learned was if you're painting the door, it's better to take off the mirror and belt molding (the trim at the bottom of the window) for a better paint job in the end. The mirror can get in the way, and if you're unlucky, the clear coat could stick in that gap between the door and the belt molding.
I’d be surprised if you couldn’t get a lexus running
Those cars are as reliable as hell.

Ya’ll probably already know this troubleshooting hack, but just sharing. About 2 years ago, my 97 Honda civic beater was jacked and joyrided and left abandoned. The goofballs used a similar key that they jammed into the ignition switch to start it. Last month I was doing some errands and the car died on me while I was driving. AAA came over and towed it back home and their scanner said it was the alternator 3 times. The battery was good so I checked fuses and then towed it to a shop where they traced the fault back to the switch (that was a little loose from when it was taken). I was ready to have the alternator replaced so I was happy to have a sharp mechanic trace it back like you did👍.
Awesome find man would love to see the detailing vid on it and see it after you find out whats causing it to not get power properly
"It looked too small" The old F150's are the size of the modern Ranger, the modern F150 is just the size of a Hummer H2.
Looks similar to a 2dr colorado size wise
and the fact that the uhaul guy didn’t do an ounce of research, smh
he could’ve easily figured out what a lighting f-150 is
As an owner of an H2 that has driven the new F150 I can confirm this is true
Yep. My 50+ year old 3/4-ton is the size of a Colorado. 20 years ago, when a friend needed his '79 2dr Caprice towed, the U-Haul guy said we had to rent the flatbed; if it were the 4dr, the dolly would've been enough.
Towed the damn thing on the bumper ball too.
TL;DR, U-Haul towing policies are open to interpretation by counter personnel.
I would have hooked the trailer up to the lightning and returned it to U-Haul.

I'm new to this channel I'm loving it so far
when the power steering gave out on a vehicle, i used to call it armstrong steering because it took strong arms to turn the wheel.
I drove an old truck back in the 1970s it didn't have power steering, brakes or windows but it did have cruise control. A stick jammed between the throttle and under the dash, one quick tap of the foot and it disengaged.
PS: It had a crash gearbox no synchromesh on any gears, so had to count lamp posts passing by to get the revs right. Very difficult out of town to find lamp posts, so counted cows instead.
I respect the fact you're donating it. That could of been an easy flip for a few grand. Someone is gonna be super happy with it.

Hey Alex, I love the idea of fixing these cars up and giving them to someone in need👍 How about this - find something like this, fix it up, then offer to swap it with someone whose car is in need of some big repairs, then fix that one up and repeat. You would have a constant flow of cars to repair AND you would be helping folks out at the same time. Great constant content‼️

I've put a second batteries into all kinds of vehicles. Just ran 0/1 gauge positive and negative wires from the main battery to the secondary.
I DROVE THE 306 H.P. VERSION OF THIS CAR, IT WAS SO FAST I ALMOST BOUGHT IT MYSELF, LOVED IT.
Never rented a trailer, didn’t realize they even care what you’re using to pull it.
You can rent a trailer here if your on a bicycle?? 🤦
Probably a liability thing. Huge pain in the ass though, I had issues renting a car trailer bc the tow vehicle was a trailblazer and the towed vehicle was a 3rd gen 4runner and according to their website the size and power ratio of the tow to the towed wasn't adequate. All I had to haul that thing was like 15 minutes lol.
U-Haul specifically had some lawsuits for renting trailers that were unsuitable for the vehicles.
So now everything runs through their computer, where you have to say what car is towing, and then If it's a car trailer you have to say what kind of car is going on it as well.
If it's not approved by the computer system then they can't rent it to you.
Of course this just means everybody in the know, lies to U-Haul about it so they have to look at the vehicle and make sure it matches the description. And that's where you had the discrepancy because the guy was expecting to see a massive F-250 sized vehicle (like a modern F-150) And instead sees this factory lowered single cab truck and assumes it's a mini truck.
Love the way your brain works. This was almost funny when it started with a paper clip. Every other mechanic plugged in their lap top and declared it dead.
I liked the fact that his brain went "hey are the brake lights working?"
i had a similar issue. I had a 1998 Ford explorer V8 eddie bower edition. called places to rent a trailer, all said no, based on the vehicle i have..
5.0 L V8., and a sticker on a pillar saying i could tow... and a factory installed big tow recepticle too. nuts!
I’m a single dad that had to stop towing due to covid and ended up moving to Florida because my baby momma got engaged to a guy out here. I lived in chicago and ran Guicho’s Towing (you can google my business) which went out of business after covid hit due to my son being home full time. I was practically his teacher.
Anyways... would be nice to be considered for the car. I still have family in Chicago and can come down to meet you for a video shoot.
If not me, then no worries. Always loved your work and I liked the last car give away. It touched my heart. Keep doing good, cause we reap what we sow.
Meanwhile, here in Spain, I was looking to buy one of these just to drive something other than a rental, minimum 10k€
" It thinks Im trying to steal it" 😄 Yes You are, You are getting it for free 😄
I once started a stranded Cadillac with a safety pin. Placed the ignition switch in the run position, then I pierced through a power wire and poked into the starter solenoid wire. Started right up.
Blown fuses there's a hidden pcm fuse under the drivers front cover for the pcm. Last time I had one like this it had a couple blown inside and out from customer jumping backwards.
This video to me has Scotty Kilmer's name all over it. The love for Toyotas haha.. Good luck fixing it up and donating it to someone in need.
Joe’s a good sport for making this happen
You should have gone to another Uhaul location. They are everywhere. Also always clean the mass airflow sensor after a car has been sitting. It clears up a lot of crank issues.
