  • It's time for another addition to our ULTIMATE Series! This time we tackle a tuff one, the ultimate alcohol stove kit. There are many options with this one, but I chose to stick to a primarily alcohol stove specific kit. My gut was to use my Firebox Nano as a stand...but let's change it up!

    ERNIE- First of all, It's YOUR KIT!!! How could it be wrong? Your Kit, Your decision! Nothing wrong with that for you.
    Secondly, There it is ! I've been waiting for what I felt was the right stand for me and My Trangia stove. Thursday is my 68th Birthday and for my birthday I've ordered the Trangia 27-3 Ultralight Hard Anodized Stove Kit and was going to also order the Firebox Nano but was hesitant. This stand is what I want! This Kit will handle both stove kits for me, the Trangia 27-3 for me , family and friends OR the Trangia Spirit Burner stove with this stands for me for day excursions, overnight and what I call "Ranger Light". We had a saying in the Army Rangers about "Travel Light and Freeze at night" With this I will Travel Light and NOT freeze at night! Getting one for my Grandson who is now in the same unit I served with

    Nice set up. Using a lighter, matches, or fire steel is the most common way to light an alcohol stove. You have the potential to burn your hand (lighter or short match) or knock over your stove (with a fire steel). I've done both. An alternative - find a small stick, dip it in the alcohol, light the stick as a match, light the stove.

    Odd. The Click Stove made your Ultimate list. Don’t believe I’ve seen that stove before - or since! 🤪

    I own both the Clikstand and the Trangia Cookset. Love them both!! The Clikstand is lighter and does great for 3 seasons. The Trangia cookset is heavier and bulkier but totally wins in a blizzard, due to the supreme windscreen. Both stoves are dramatically improved with the Trangia winter attachments that allows you to light your Trangia burner on fire to preheat the alcohol. Great review.

    You are not wrong. But, as you said, its your kit. As far as the creamer, again, its your cup of coffee. Coffee can be enjoyed natural, sweet, creamy, or flavored; or even, dark roasted, mild, or even weak. Its not a competition. Whatever maximizes your enjoyment is the right thing for you and a good host would always try to satisfy his guest. There is no right answer, only the answer that is right for you. Your videos have increased my knowledge about making coffee and for that, I thank you. Keep you excellent videos coming. Ciao

    I use the Firebox Nano with a trangia. This gives me the ability to use alcohol, wood, or solid fuel (with the nano plate). It all packs really small and compact in itself and you know that you will have a fuel source no matter what.

    • @staalefo
      @staalefo Před 3 lety

      I agree! Firebox Nano is compact and with the Trangia spirit burner you can choose between wood or alcohol.

      Firebox Nano is definitely an excellent choice, however, you would definitely need an additional wind screen.

  • @pete67aus
    @pete67aus Před 3 lety

    It's your kit so it has to work for you and what you want to get out of it.
    I have several different options. For bikepacking where I need to carry gear in my frame bag (in the triangle of the bike frame) and it needs to be narrow so it doesn't interrupt pedaling. For this, I use a Toaks Ti siphon stove and stainless steel mesh pot stand. I have added some cut up aluminium can to the inside of the mesh as a windshield. This all fits inside a 400ml Ti cup from AlpKit which in turn nests inside a Toaks Ti 750ml pot. The GSI Java Drip filter sits on top pf the pot. I carry a cloth and small ferro rod inside the cup too. All very compact and it suits my requirements well. For hiking, I might go with the Trangia if I need to cook something where simmering is required. I also use a Toaks Ti windshield (like a roll titanium foil) to wrap around pot, stand and burner as required when using the Trangia. The best thing about a stove addiction is having so many choices that satisfy whatever the particular need is for the adventure you are on.
    Thanks for the great videos.

    Depends on the application. Car or motorcycle camping, my ultimate would be the trangia 25-3 or any variation of it.
    For backpacking, my ultimate is hands down for me is the fancy feast with the trangia fuel bottle and a DIY windscreen. I can interchange any pot I want with this.
    Nice vid!! I Love alcohol stoves!

  • @donaldwalter1317
    @donaldwalter1317 Před rokem

    I got 2 models of the clic stove. Both can use the Trangia burners but one version has a slot in side so I can use a butane burner.
    Just recently I saw a demonstration of pill bottle stove. Small circular pucks of firebrick (used in pizza ovens). Soak the stones with alcohol than light.
    You can utilize these stones with clic stove which provides a wind shield and pot stand at same time.

    Agree with you. Clikstand with a Trangia was one of my first stove kits. Spent many years trying other alky options but was never really able to do better. Lighter, yes. Better, no. The notched wings that hold the windscreen is part of what sets it apart from other similar systems. Like you, I've had lots of fun trying systems but in truth I had the best from the beginning.

    I have just started to mess around with a Trangia stove after watching all of your alcohol stove videos. I have found that an Esbit Mini works with the Trangia so this gives me a couple of fuel choices and a small compact and light setup. Thank you for all the information.

    That stand is pretty awesome. Im put off by the necessity for a huge pot tho. For coffee, I only boil 300ml so a huge pot is a waste.of space and weight.

    Trangia.
    Simple cross stand sit directly on top.
    Lixada 350ml cup.
    Folding lightweight windscreen.

    I use the Trail Designs Triway Fuel system with the Kojin EtOH stove (has lid to store EtOH in it and carbon "fluff" to keep EtOH from spilling ) the Triway cone is specially made for you pot so the whole thing will fit in the pot. It can also use solid fuel with a "Graham Cracker" stand AND wood with an extra insert. If you haven't tried it I HIGHLY recommend it!

  • @pgpagaia
    @pgpagaia Před rokem

    Good choices. Those triangle style stands are a great design in my opinion. My ultimate kit is BCB firedragon,a pot from Czech mess kit and gel alcohol. Gel alcohol can be found everywhere these days as hand sanitizer and it even comes in tiny bottles. Perfect for day hikes.
    The BCB fire dragon has great wind resistance without the fuss of a large wind screen. And the large diameter pot maximises heat usage. Would you test this setup on you channel? You won't be disappointed with the results, I promise. I also drink from an enamel cup which I find adds to the whole experience rather plastic cups.
    Btw... You Americans spoil the coffe with your creamers. Just add ground coffee in boiled water, let is set and decant.

  • @ORflycaster
    @ORflycaster Před 10 měsíci

    I've got the Clikstand, and just about EVERY other alcohol stove and related gear...................very similar to Ernie's collection. IMO the "ultimate" complete alcohol cook kit is the Trangia 25. Two pots, a kettle, a frying pan lid, and a bomber stand and windscreen that are all as perfect as the infamous burner. In second place, the Trangia 27. I just prefer the extra volume of the 25 kit for a small weight penalty, but that's my personal preference. I'll continue to use, experiment and enjoy my huge collection of stoves, but when I'm serious, it's the Trangia 25 every time.

  • @hike-bike-paddle-and-drone

    LOVE IT!!!!! I got so happy to see you love the Click-Stand too! The only thing I have surmised after using mine though was that using only an alcohol burner on week long trips necessitates the need for a LOT of fuel. So I am putting together a kit that integrates a wood burning stove and doubles as a wind screen for my Solo Stove alcohol burner, then no worries!

      @camojoe83 Před 3 lety

      Nah, lots of em do. I mean, you need a stand with a trangia, first off. Second, carrying a meals worth of fuel in the can doesn't mean crap unless you're just out for a CZcams coffee video. They crack when you run em long enough in cold weather and then they leak, they have all sorts of extra parts to not drop. Adding the extreme cold weather accessories adds even more bits and weight. Most any well designed diy stove woops up on the trangia pretty easily.

  • @hypo345
    @hypo345 Před 3 lety

    100% with you on this, the Clickstand is for me the ultimate light weight yet flexible burner stand, one can use gas, Ethonol and solid fuel. Its very wind resistant when used with the windshield.
    In Titanium it's unbelievably light and can be carried in a pocket.
    So I can use small-diameter cooking pots or my Turkish coffee pot (Ibrik) I took a Tangia pot stand and cut the outside pieces off to leave a 3 legged stand that fits into the pointed pot supports of the Clikstand.
    If using a frying pan one just needs to open up the windshield a bit and place on the ground and it still gives some wind protection.

  • @kenknight5494
    @kenknight5494 Před 3 lety

    Great vid and I do like your non-arrogant approach to right/wrong best/worst etc. May I point out one error you made regarding pot size on the click-stand - At the sides of the raised 'pot holder' tabs are notches. These are to take 3 tent pegs which will then support a smaller diameter pot (note, the click-in base should be in the lower slots to allow for the drop in pot height). All the best.

    I found out that I can use Nespresso coffee pods with an Aero Press to make top notch coffee. You can use a pour over system if you prefer. I like the pod because it's measured for 7 oz of water and it keeps the coffee dry since it's air tight. They're compact and lightweight. All you need is a knife to open the aluminum seal and you can buy them off Amazon if you don't want to go through Nespresso's website.

    That is a great kit and I agree with your reasoning.
    For me for alcohol it’s the Trangia and fancy feast stove.
    I like Tokes titanium pots.
    I don’t like metal cups, I prefer plastic or silicone.
    With the variety of gear available these days if you can’t build a kit to suit yourself then you’re not trying 😊

  • @jefftp
    @jefftp Před 3 lety

    It's all your fault, Ernie! My cook kit is a brick: Firebox Nano G2 and a Trangia Spirit Burner (along with the Firebox X-Case and an Olicamp Convector windscreen). I keep buying new alcohol stove kits trying to cut my weight and keep coming back to the old brick kit because I enjoy using it so much more.
    It's frustrating that the Clikstand costs as much as a Firebox Nano when the Nano is so much more versatile. Sure the Clikstand is lighter, but at 2.0 oz for the stand and 3.4 oz for the Trangia you've already blown all illusions of an ultra light kit (you can built a Toaks kit with cup, stand, and burner at only 5 oz).

    I’m a big fan of the Evernew Appalachian Ti set. It’s super lightweight, the stove, stand and windshield nests in the cup and it’s the perfect size for a cup of coffee (two if you want to share!). Only downside is the lack of a simmer ring and lid for the stove. Don’t mind the Trangia mini too!

    Also the Clislcksatnd with windshield rolled up around a Nalgene bottle for fuel, Evernew or Trangia burner, lighter, folding spoon and a small Ferro rod will all fit into a GSI stainless-steel kettle with ease, or the anodised aluminium GSI kettle with some gentle persuasion.

    Your not wrong the click stand is a great little stove. It's also easy to assemble after you do it a few times. Light weight , packs small and in titanium cools quickly. Stoves...The Evernew titanium stove if it was more like the Trangia it would surpass the Trangia by miles Primarily due to the light weigh and the ability to cool quickly. The main problem with the Evernew stove it that it's a fuel hog. It has to be due to the extra set of holes/jets. In reality , all of us don't own/drive the same type of vehicle and it's the same when using alcohol stoves. For me it's the Evernew Titanium Appalachian set beats all the rest when it comes to only using alcohol as a fuel.

    Hello Dr. Ernie,
    Pretty good kit, but I still liked your Sterno Inferno used with the alcohol stove. Must faster boil times and less fuel use making ETOH more viable of a fuel for longer hikes. Since your video the Sterno Inferno is what I use for short hikes, but dislike that it is not good for wood fire as I always like this option. Maybe I like it for day hikes, but would choose something more versatile for longer times in the woods. Thanks again for another good video.

    I have the Clikstand and Trangia. My only issue and it’s a very small one, is the windscreen rolling up. It’s a little bulky. Otherwise it’s great. One hack I do is to cut up a coat hanger to get three small sections. I lay them across the Clikstand creating a sort of triangle so I can use a small cup.

    I pass over the trangia stove because of weight. I’d vote the Trail Designs Sidewinder with an Evernew 1.2L ultralight pot and a Zelph Starlyte stove. It will store excess fuel if necessary. Strong competition for a smaller mug would be a Flat Cat Gear Snow Leopard system with a 550, 650 or 750 mug. Both sets combine the pot stand and windscreen and the stoves are much lighter by UL standards.

    That Clickstand is cute but very bulky. The roll-up windscreen alone negates the rest of the system, as I believe the Caldera Cone does funneling the heat much better and without the added weight of a stand. Also, the Caldera Cone stores better in a pack and...the Clickstand is a 'One-trick Pony'. Trangia shaped alcohol burners, that's it. As for the 'best of the best'? Gram for gram, easy to store in a pack and just straight up versatility? Imo, NOTHING...beats the Goshawk Siphon EDDY-X burner(without the crappy stand) in a Firebox Ultralight Nano Stove, especially if you can afford the Titanium version which is SO worth it. Alcohol, Solid fuel, Charcoal, Wood? If it burns? It works! and it makes a great windscreen/stove for a gas burner, all at 4 ounces including a cute little metal storage bin that of course, doubles an your ash catch. Checkmarks in the Win column all the way down the list. 😉

    As most probably all of us I have quite a few favourite kits (😜)and one of my most favourite ones is a Swiss army gel stove (M71) filled with medical spirit (ethanol) instead of the original gel (I don't get such gel here but every pharmacy has medical spirit), carried inside a simple Indian mug with fixed handle, including a home made wind screen and a home made lid for the mug. As accessories I carry a ferro rod and an Opinel for ignition. And I carry all that set/kit packed in an old camera bag. Ultimate! 😁🤣😁

    Dunno about "cool morning" 18°F here in mid TN over an inch of ice on the ground and its snowing. 13 is the low tonight then it looks like we'll be on our way out of the vortex. Then maybe I can get out in the woods. I do think that is a pretty good choice, with all the possibilities out there everyone will have their own favorite. Maybe just memories of simpler times or nostalgia drive everyone's personal choice, ultimately.

    I just tried my trangia in my silverfire scout wood stove, with the silverfire dragon pot. Why? Well - because I really wanted to try out my new mini dragon pot, and I like stoves that can use multiple fuel sources. The scout is not designed as multifuel, though. The mini dragon is a double wall pot that is made to fit over the silverfire scout stove, and capture all the heat. I just set the trangia in the bottom of the wood chamber, thinking it wouldn't work because it was way to far from the pot, no where near the magic 1". This combination boiled 2 cups of water in about 4:20. That said, the clickstand is high on my list of things to buy. Looks great.

  • @MrFmiller
    @MrFmiller Před 3 lety

    Personally I like a wind screen that extends to near the top of the pot using a pot with a bail. The heat is retained along a larger area of the pot as well as less area to cool down. It helps heat a bit faster and consequently saves a bit of fuel. I’ve run out of fuel prematurely, although that was my fault because I hadn’t calculated the extra fuel needed at higher altitudes (I have a Docooler breakdown Solo knock off so I could just use indigenous fuel). Nevertheless, I do everything I can to conserve fuel and bring a bit of extra as well.

    Hi Ernie. In my opinion, you have come pretty close to the ultimate alcohol stove with that setup. The thing that makes the Trangia system work so well is the two part combined wind shield/burner holder/pot stand. The Click Stand with wind shield goes some way to emulating the Trangia system but in a more compact and easy to transport, light weight package. Please can you tell me if the Trangia burner simmer ring can be used with the Click Stand? With the simmer ring rotated to the fully open position, does it fit inside the walls of the Click Stand. Thank you.

    Ernie, the only thing I'd change is the pot and I'd use the nano. Excellent point about being able to carry fuel in the stove. Was surprised you didn't go with the Nano but you addressed that. Id go with the nano so, like the reasoning for your choosing the Trangia for its extra feature of fuel storage, the nano would be an additional tool for different fuels.

Ideally I will burn twigs and carry 12oz of Heet as a backup fuel source. This is for 5-8 day backpacking trips. Just curious if you have played around with the Solo Lite as a pot stand and/or if you have done anything using that combination and a windscreen.

If I want a bigger stove, I've started using the Firebox Gen2 Titanium 5 Inch. It's expensive, but its a beast as well. My favorite kit comes from one of your videos. The Trangia of course, paired with the Sterno Inferno. I have been using it on almost every day hike this winter, make soup and a cup of coffee of tea. The Trangia fits inside the Sterno Inferno base and pot kit with a small cloth and bic lighter. Because it comes with the integrated 500 ml pot it is compact and boils water quicker then any other alcohol system I have tried.

      Same here but I use the evernew burner. It will usually go into thermal runaway but I never load more than 1 ounce so it can only runaway so far! I ditch the stand on the bottom of the pot stand and I replaced the lid with a universal lid from Survival Resources. I can boil two cups of water before the one ounce runs out, less than 2 and a half minutes.

  • @bobinmontana777
    @bobinmontana777 Před 3 lety

    Well, since you asked for input on why you were wrong here you go. The trangia is great, but if you just go for a day hike why not fill the trangia and just take it without the fuel bottle? Then it is a good setup. The evernew is lighter, for a multi day trip, the fuel bottle would be necessary, but the lighter stove would make me feel like a true gram weanie. That said, I don’t own the trangia. The toaks titanium alcohol stove and toaks titanium stand are the only two pieces of kit I need. I have the toaks titanium windscreen if needed. I do agree the evernew pot is my choice also. As I have the titanium evernew kit I struggle not to just take the stand too, it doubles as a not bad wood stove too. If you read to the end of my critique, you realize I have a bunch of stoves and just want to RESIST buying your nice setup too. Ernie, thanks for your videos, always informative and entertaining.

    Do you think that this ultimate ultimate stove kit will still be your ultimate kit in six month's time? From personal experience I doubt it. My present kit runs to a Trangia burner, a stainless steel wire bi-fold pot stand, a lighter and scouring pad which fit inside a 400ml Ti cup with lid, inside a 750ml Ti pot with bail and lid which in turn fits inside an Ikea hobo stove. Food is carried inside a hard anodised mess tin which also has a lid and this can be used to boil or fry. That's my ultimate kit, at present, but in six month's time ,,,, who knows?
