Ergin Ataman deserves the coach of the year award. He created a totally new team from zero and made it the second best team of the regular season. Bartzokas is a great coach, but he finished lower than Ataman , and his team is almost the same as the one he had last year.

Your statement "his team is almost the same as the one he had last year" is contested. You seem to downplay the fact that Olympiacos lost two of its most offensively gifted players, Vezenkof and Sloukas. It's clear that there's a misconception about what coaching is.
Coaching isn't just about giving tactics per play; it's about building a winning culture and effectively managing both the team and game dynamics.
Ergin Ataman is an example of this broader understanding of coaching. Both his time in Efes and recent success with Panathinaikos, Ataman doesn't only "recruit the right players"; he build teams that succeed under pressure and adapt to the evolving challenges of European basketball.
For example, did you see the locker room videos of Pana? When Ataman walks in, unity and motivation visibly increase, players startt roaring and cheeering his leadership. His presence and strategic insights inspire confidence and a fighting spirit, crucial in a winning mentality. This isn't just about freedom on the court; it’s about setting clear objectives and ensuring every player is aligned and motivated to achieve them.
In this video, I hear that coaching is defined as improving a play for an individual player. Grigonis was going to be sold before the season started; now he is one of the major players in the starting five and has been offered a big contract. What is improving an individual player if not this?
Coaching involves managing players' egos and expectations. Watch carefully stars like Slukas and Nunn in Pana games; before a play, they look to him for cues, viewing gameplay tactics as guidance, not dictation. He doesn't micromanage every play. These players have big egos and big talent, but he smartly guides the ever-changing dynamics of a game. He undertands individual and team psychology. Ataman knows when to step back and when to step in.
Coaching involves strategically intervening in games when things are not going well. Ataman does this during games, like famous fists in the Efes-Barcelona matchup; he gets technical fauls and confronts the referees, these interventions aren't just for show-they're calculated to influence the game's momentum. He intentionally receives technical fouls to reshuffle the cards and motivate his players. Mind game against Pablo Laso in Efes-Real final in the last minute is also good coaching.
Let's please move beyond the simplistic "leaving the players free" argument, it's time to study, if not recognize, the complexity of what coaches like Ataman do.
He's a coach who's won every major European cup by mastering the art of leadership. Street basketball can not win these cups (a quote from him)

@@sarbelagamemnon my post was sarcastic my friend. it is the hosts (gytis especially) that refuse to give the man his flowers and mockingly call him a manager or a gm. Last time it was because of the huge budget that Panathinaikos is successful even though pao has maybe the 6th largest budget in the league.
I agree with almost everything in your analysis and just to add one point, if only those coaches that micromanage deserve to be called coaches then there are no basketball coaches in the NBA except maybe Popovich and a couple more. All the others should be called managers in that perspective.
Bottom line, the man is super successful. his style works. whatever anyone says, he deserves COTY for the best turnaround in a single season the league has ever seen.
everything else is just noise, clickbait and personal preference or dislike.

Taking a team that is second to last and in a few months finishing second? There is no doubt about the coach of the year.
There are many teams with huge budget that underperform for years(Armani, Barca, Monaco, Fener, zvezda, efes this year) and many coaches that can't do anything with huge budgets (messina most notably, even Bartzokas in his disastrous seasons with barca and Khimki) so no budget is not the answer.
It's the second time he does this kind of turnaround in just a season after he did it with Efes. Let's give him the respect he deserves

@@kostasflr what do you mean average by technical game? He builds a team with peaces that link together perfectly, he gives freedom to players who are good decision makers (micic, sloukas) and let the scorers do their thing (Larkin, Nunn). His teams have perfect spacing and play defence above their individual defensive talent. Pablo laso is pretty much like that. And it seems that in the recent years that is the most effective way judging by the results.
The only one that can control the game, make the perfect game plan for every opponent and build a roster is obradovic. Everyone else has something in the game they are not good at. Ataman is not that good at in-game coaching. Saras is too controlling and doesn't give enough freedom to his players. Bartzokas doesn't adjust in the game and sticks to the playing time and formations he decided beforehand. Sasa obradovic can't control his players and in the locker room there is chaos.
