    I was at a job making pretty dang good money for a 19 year old and finally got my first few credit cards (2 from local credit unions, capital one platinum) and started raising my credit. My credit got up to a 768 at 19 years old! With a car loan too might I add. Down the road ended up losing that job and ended up at a job where I wasn’t making near enough money to pay my bills so if it weren’t for the cards I would’ve probably got my car repossessed and just gone down hill. Now I’m currently paying off all that debt. About 6k left!

    I only got into the credit card points game a little over a year ago at 41 years old. I wish I knew about this years ago but here I am and I'm going to keep going. Luckily the CSR was out at the time with the 100,000 bonus so I got a great start. It's been such a mad dash that I couldn't even tell what all went on when. You have saved me from some major mistakes and have been a great guide through a big part of the time I've been in. I can't thank you enough Sebby.

    I can relate to your journey... started with the freedom and got the CSP later on as well as some other cards from the Chase suit..I'd traveled 3 times in 2017 including Hawaii (w/ my wife) all thanks to the credit card game. We have another trip coming up in 3 weeks to Peru and Colombia which we used points for the tickets...My wife and I also started a travel blog focused on Spanish speaking community because we came across plenty of people including family and friends who weren't even aware of the existance of miles and points. We believe everyone can benefit from credit cards. Again... Great stuff Sebby!

    Thanks for the insight Sebastian.
    Amusingly, the reason I got into credit cards is the inability to get a restaurant reservation for my anniversary. When I tried to get into the French Laundry by trying to call, it was such a onerous and horrible experience that I gave up trying to do it myself after a few days. I then started looking into Amex Platinum to use the concierge service as a way in.
    Then, down the rabbit hole for me.

    First there was nothing... then there was Ask Sebby. For real I had a card since college but I avoided using credit cards until about three years ago (I'm 33). I lived overseas for a while so that helped me stay away as well. My coworkers would talk about their points and their cash back. I travel frequently for business and pleasure. Finally I started looking into credit and found out that because of my mortgage and student loans I had a 795 credit score! I started using cards and Ask Sebby really helped to inform me on the best cards to choose. I feel disappointed that I missed out on so many points until now. Thanks Sebby!

    lol I am 40 and have just now over the past year gotten over the fear of having more then one or two credit cards! Thanks to your channel. Most everyone I talk to still believes that too many cards can get you in trouble. This is true but I try to explain that this is for the person who does not carry a balance. I still avoid the company credit card that is offered to me often. The turn around time for our expense reports is really quick so it never is an issue. I have received so many points this way on my CSR its been great. I have a calendar event to remind me when to change my CSP to a Freedom. I can't wait to take advantage of the categories there. Thank again Sebby. I refer lots of friends to your channel even one who has just moved here from the UK. It has been interesting for him. As usually, really helpful advice. I've been able to view credit through a different lens since watching your videos. This needs to be a required course in college! I signed up for credit cards willy nilly in college and destroyed my credit. I spent years trying to rebuild it but I was clueless about how it works. Thank God for CZcams because I probably would have continued in my vicious cycle of bad credit for the rest of my life. I think I discovered your videos when I decided that I was going to commit to travel and I learned that there was a whole world of people traveling using benefits earned from credit cards. I was of the Dave Ramsey-esque mindset that credit cards are bad and they will led you into the poor house. Credit card churning and just being smart about only spending what you can afford to pay off made all the difference. It's not free money which is what we though it was in college. Interest is a beast and to actually earn benefits rather than having credit cards pimp your finances is so empowering! Have an amazing new year!

    • @AskSebby
      @AskSebby  Před 6 lety +1

      Out of curiosity, what flipped the switch from the Ramsey to the Sebby mindset?

    • @DeeBelluptownflavor
      @DeeBelluptownflavor Před 6 lety

      To be honest I didn't know anything about Ramsey until around the same time that I came across your videos. As a matter of fact I think that is how I stumbled across your videos. In any event, I never really bought that credit cards were "bad" and the fact that someone had figured out how to essentially "hack" them was fascinating to me. Like I said before I was really interested in traveling and my friends had mentioned how they used credit card points but I never understood how since I didn't understand the tier system of credit cards (I like the way Credit Shifu broke it down) so between watching you, Beat the Bush, and Credit Shifu I feel like I can now navigate the world of credit much better. My long term goals are to spend only what I can afford to pay off that month, increase my credit score, and land a CSR or AMEX Plantinum to use for travel. I am also working toward paying off remaining outstanding balances which will bring my utilization down and save me hundreds of dollars in interest payments per year. ETA: I wanted to add that I find the Everydollar app very useful for determining how much I can spend each month so used in conjunction with cash back credit cards it is a valuable tool.

    Cashback credit cards are the only logical way to spend money over cash and debit if you're being responsible. I don't like that the media and adults are very apprehensive of credit cards. I'm glad my parents taught me about the benefits of cashback and how easy it is to avoid interest

    So.. 7 cards in a year essentially.

    I've had 2 credit cards since i started college in 2010 but never really reaped the benefits. I didn't even take the time to see what it offered. I did not have the greatest credit score and wasn't sure how positively affect it until i came across your channel. Based on your videos and advice, i have increased my the amount of cards by 3 this year, though my score took a dip for a couple months it jumped right back up in no time. Not only i am enjoying my cash back.. next year (2018) I will be seeking travel benefits, one thing I have noticed there aren't as many choices in Canada compared to USA. However I am loving the content and advice, keep it up!

    @silverwzw Před 5 lety

    I went through the exact same path.
    - Before I start: Credit card is NOT evil but I don't need it.
    - First year: I probably can use a 2% back card, set it up and forget about it.
    - Second year: Citi Forward looks promising, 5% food & amazon can save some bucks for me.
    - Third year: Citi prestige and US Bank Club Carlson
    Today, even though 3 of the 4 cards that lured me into the credit card world has died (FYI, the 4 cards are Fertility 2%, Citi Forward & Prestige, US Bank Club Carlson). I end up having a ton of cards, including the prestige, reserve and platinum.

    Poor decisions made worse by not understanding credit made my early 20s not so fun financially. I figured out how it works, and like you, added a bunch of cards to build a base. Hey Sebby, Thanks for this self reflecting video. Some family encouraged me to get a couple credit cards to (between discover and cap one venture) to build up credit and to travel (like for you with sapphire from chase as needed). At this point with 5 cards for cash back/ reward points (depending on their program), 1 travel card, and 2 cancelled cards (due to lack of usage), I do have one question for you based on this self reflection: which hotel credit card (assuming it’s from chase for Hyatt, marriott, or ritz-Carlton) do you have a preference as to which card you use the most or which hotel would you use the most that would be more beneficial?
    I’m only asking because if I to Travel, I would like to use my points from that credit card and/or my chase cards to transfer them over to that card to mitigate the cost. Like how you said you prefer in this video.

      Chase IHG and Chase Hyatt are easy "free money" to me. You're paying $49 and $75 respectively for free nights at each of those hotels. Perfect for emergencies or random weekend trips. If you want to talk strategy: www.asksebby.com/free-card-consultation/

    • @lawandorderking
      @lawandorderking Před 6 lety

      Hey Sebby, before I go to your consultation card site, what is the IHG card and are they issued for a hotel chain industry (nationally or internationally)? I only ask is because I never heard of them. Hyatt may sound solid due to random weekend trips / emergencies. After I do your consultation, I'll probably help zero in on those hotel cards that i would consider in the later future.

      Due to its high fees, the Centurion card doesn't tend to be a good value for most folks (initiation fee of $5k or $7.5k, plus $2.5k AF per card), unless you travel every week and/or spend a ton. Is there any way that you know of that I can pay my car payment every month with my credit card to get the rewards. My financing is through Ally Financial.

      Jeremy James Ally does not let you pay with credit cards but you probably can with some of the services out there like Plastiq but then you are adding 2.5% to each of your payments and that makes no sense obviously

      Jeremy James he wasn't sebby, lol. But yeah, I agree with him. Unless you have a card that gives you over 2.5% cashback on car payments, it's not wise at all
