Hilton in my experience has offered me the best experiences and value for my loyalty. I went to the Maldives alone for diving and they upgraded me to a grand overwater villa valued at 1600$ a night. Ever since then I decided to start going for a multiple aspire set up. Though I receipt have gained platinum status at marriot, while working towards the ritz Carlton card. So I hope that my Marriot experience is as good as Hilton if not even better. We’ll see 🙏

Being dedicated to one brand, I've managed to hit Titanium partially thanks to the Bonvoy Brilliant card. We just got back from the JW Marriott Cancun, where we got upgraded to a 1-bedroom oceanfront suite from a base room. The most baller recent status upgrade was at St. Regis Houston, where we stayed as part of an extended date night (nearby omakase + saki pairing), and we got the unexpected bump to the Astor St. Regis suite, including a butler and some amazing desserts in room.

I’ve heard great things about M Club lounges in Europe, but wonder what the footprint / experience is like in the U.S. I see a lot of CZcamsrs talk about airport lounges but there isn’t much out there regarding the top hotel lounges that these cards give you access to.

US it really depends on how expensive the brand is. Heard good things about JW lounges for example. Hilton ones have been pretty meh of the 10+ I've been to).
Asia it's usually amazing. Like absurdly "I could spend all day here" levels lol
It helps that a lot of them have breakfast, afternoon tea, AND happy hour for food and then drinks and snacks throughout the day. Also good views in most cases (i.e., top floor for some of the major cities).

So exactly how do theses hotel cards work for upgrades/benefits? I have a stay coming up in Anchorage in an IHG hotel (the Crown Plaza) which I booked with a different card a few months ago. • @AskSebby

Cards give you status. If you have status at check-in, you're eligible for upgrades. As long as you booked directly with the hotel (i.e., NOT with Expedia, or a 3rd party), then you're fine.

I just realized that the new free night certificates were posted even though they closed the accounts. The AFs were posted and Chase waived the AFs after the cancelation. Free night rewards were posted right on the anniversary date. They surely didn't pay for the AF renewal. The bank didn't claw back the free night awards Is that bank's error? Are the free night certificates good to use? BTW, their status changed to Gold now So IHG knows that they don't have IHG Premier anymore.

My take as somebody that earned status the “hard way” by hundreds of nights per year - I don’t want to see shortcuts to status, at least the top levels. It sucks being on the road all the time, so missing out on upgrades when some people just have it from paying an AF can be lame after a long trip. I’m lifetime Titanium with Marriott, but domestically would never get upgraded. Even when I had Hilton Diamond, it would be rare in the U.S. This is the main reason I moved to Hyatt. You get the upgrade basically every stay with Globalist. I still use Marriott as backup since the Hyatt footprint isn’t as big, but best I can hope for is the breakfast benefit with them.
The cards are definitely great for earning and giving at least lower tier status makes sense as part of the AF, but the highest tiers and benefits should ideally be reserved for those that are actually staying the most.

🏹 Hi Sebby, As far as upgrades, you say that a late arrival helps. My tentative counterpoint was that the availability of the upgrades themselves might be gone if they've already handed them out to others who came in earlier. I also remember that you like to check in early to enjoy the property... does that mean you don't score as many upgrades as you might otherwise? I don't know how many last-minute walk-in customers they might expect... I'm picturing this would vary severely depending on where the property is - and maybe the level of the property. Like - we're not likely to see someone just show up and buy a room at Conrad Bora Bora, for example. Surely they have their reservations set days or weeks in advance, if not months. A property like the Hilton Maui Waldorf Astoria might be almost as unlikely as Bora Bora to have a last-minute reservation... and then maybe the Hilton San Francisco Union Square - still a nice property, but more likely to have quite a few last-minute arrivals. ...indeed we saw several airline crews there - and I bet they come at all times and sometimes without much notice. Thanks!

Really depends on the brand and property. Hilton XLR in Vegas was super proactive.
If I had to guess, optimal check-in time is 5pm to 8pm. That's when they have a good idea of occupancy (and have already tried upselling to people who checked in earlier).
If you check-in at 2pm, you're usually opting for a smaller room (obviously YMMV). For a lot of our work trips (i.e., NYC) that's kinda what we do, especially if we're doing a redeye or did an all-nighter on the way there.
If you don't need the room, you can also have them hold your luggage while you use the facilities.
But yeah, lots of factors. Vacation ones are also different since no one is going to show up last minute to the island vs. NYC.
TLDR: It's hard to get upgraded with early check-in :)
