  • Hilton or Marriott. The age old question really. Would you rather stay at Hilton or Marriott? Both have great rewards programs, but only one can win this showdown. Which one has the best hotel rewards?

Marriott and Hilton have always been competing with one another to be the largest hotel chain. Marriott currently takes the cake with over 7,000 properties. You can base the purchase of Starwood back in 2016 that really cemented their status as the world’s largest hotel operator.
As you would expect, both hotel chains offer great benefits in their rewards programs.
There are a number of cards that provide instant status with both Hilton and Marriot. One card gives you gold status at both Hilton and Marriott and that would be the AMEX platinum card. It does have a $550 annual fee.
The Marriott Bonvoy Boundless gives you automatic Silver Status and the chance to earn gold through $35,000 on purchases in a year. It comes with a $95 annual fee.
The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant gives you automatic Gold status with the card. A $450 annual fee.
The Hilton Honors card gives you automatic Silver status with a $0 annual fee.
The Hilton Honors Surpass card gives you automatic Gold status with a $95 annual fee.
The Hilton Honors Aspire card gives you automatic Diamond status with a $450 annual fee.
Okay now onto the actual benefits of each program compared directly to one another. Both programs offer you a member level which is just when you sign up.
At the member level both programs offer free Wi-Fi, member rates and mobile check-in/key or in Hilton’s case, Digital check in. It’s the same thing as mobile check in. Hilton offers you the ability to choose your room and get no resort fees on reward stays. You also get Hilton Experiences and here are some examples of them. It looks like fun little things to spend your points on.
To move into the next category, you need to stay at each place at least 10 nights. Marriott likes to add the word elite on their tiers, but we are just going to ignore that. At the Silver level on both reward programs you get a points bonus, 10% with Marriott and 20% with Hilton. Marriot you get late check out. With Hilton you get your fifth night free on reward stays, that’s book five nights and one is free. Two free bottles of water with Hilton and Elite rollover nights.
Moving onto Gold status for both. You need to stay 25 nights with Marriott and 40 nights with Hilton to get these. Marriot gives you a 25% bonus on points while Hilton gives you an 80% bonus on points. Both give you room upgrades if available. Marriott might give you a hotel welcome gift, which was water when I stayed with them once. Hilton gives you free continental breakfast.
Next onto Diamond Status with Hilton and Platinum status with Marriott. You need to stay 50 nights at Marriot and 60 nights at Hilton to get this status. Hilton has a 100% bonus points and Marriot has a 50% bonus. Both give you lounge access and a room guarantee, which is actually super nice. Hilton gives you a diamond status extension you can use once if you want to.
Marriott has two more tiers though. Titanium elite at 75 nights, gives you a 75% point bonus. A two day room guarantee and another annual choice benefit.

Hilton Receptionist here for 1 minor thing.
When you're a Hilton Honors Diamond Member: you get point and some form of food credit or snack (Depends on Brand, I know Doubletree you get 1000 points and $15 F&B Credit, Hampton I think its 250 pts and a snack since they already have free breakfast for all guests)
When you're a Gold Member, you get the choice of either points or snack

      @@ronaldcaudle7167 Maybe ask?
Hilton got me hooked as it has been my first 2 years right now as Diamond and I'm going all the way to the 10 years for lifetime.
I have had very good service by asking.
I'd say they have upgraded me 80 percent of the time, including properties that should not be upgradeable like a Hampton Inn or Hilton Garden Inn. Every time I ask, they try to accommodate me some way.
But I guess it varies from person to person.
My biggest upgrade has been at a Waldorf Astoria property. They gave me a whole cottage all to myself worth over $1,000 a night and I paid for the lowest room possible that night with all points even, no cash. The receptionist even gave me a tour of the whole property while he asked an employee to take his place while he checks me in to my room.
An unbelievable experience and that's what got me hooked.

I have Marriott Ambassador status, its hands down better than Hilton overall, especially since Hilton’s only lifetime status is diamond and it doesn’t accompany any airline status. Marriott at least offers Premier Silver with United with Bonvoy Titanium status.

Breakfast is no longer “free” at Hilton. They have a “food and beverage credit” which varies from property to property. The idea is ok but, the credit rarely adds up to the price of a breakfast item so you end up paying out of your own pocket.

I plan to stay loyal to Hilton but also join Hyatt to expand my options. I prefer Hilton for resort stays and whenever Hyatt is not available due to their fewer locations compared to Hilton and Marriott. For conference stays, I prefer Hyatt. I do not have a favorable opinion of Marriott since they are owned by Mormons, and I am unsure if they are accepting of the LGBTQ+ community. However, my opinion may be biased. Additionally, Marriott partners with United Airlines, which I would prefer to avoid. Lastly, I find Hilton's credit card to be better than Marriott's.

I do like the new promos mostly because it would have been difficult for some people to keep their elite status this past year. Most of the airlines adjusted their 2020 requirements so it’s only fitting the hotels did as well

@@JacobFisher Most airlines and some hotels auto extended all statuses for a year or more . So keeping Status isnt a problem . The current Hilton double elite nights and bonus points make it easier for those going for Status to attain it. The only problem is we would be limited to the domestic sector and don’t know when we can resume International travel to use the Status and reap the benefits. I am wondering if it’s worth doing a Mattress Run, am considering it. Am based in SE Asia where we have reasonably priced Cat 1 Hotels . Hyatt and Marriott Bonvoy are also having promos. Likely I will hold off till early next year to do my Mattress Run.

The Hilton Garden Inn San Francisco Airport in Burlingame is beyond unreasonable. If you want to be insulated as a paying customer, go ahead and book it. I hope you will enjoy their peloton offering.
Here is what happened to me. First I checked in using the app and got my digital key. When I arrived, there is another guest in my room. We went to the concierge, they told us this happened because we shared the same last name - is this a legit reason? Anyway, they gave me a new room at a lower floor. The next day, when I check out, they asked for my credit card. This was surprising because I put my credit card down when booking and was not asked when checking in. Plus, there were two rooms assigned to me. It’s reasonable for anyone to check a few details before handing out the credit card. Not to mention that it was 8:30am, hours before the check out time. I have every right to confirm the legitimacy of the request for credit card. However, the woman at the front desk accused me of refusing to pay and interrupted me multiple times when I tried to explain to her why I needed to check a few details before putting my credit card out. Also, she threatened multiple times about calling the police without listening.
If you think the above is ridiculous, hold on. After I made a few calls to the hotel customer care and my credit card company, I was ready to pay. So, I went to the front desk and asked to put down my credit card. During the process, I found out that that women was filming me using her personal phone! Without my consent!!
