- New Jeans creator and ADOR CEO Min Hee-jin is under fire for allegedly plagiarizing the 1982 hit song 'Easier Said Than Done' by Shakatak. Min Hee-jin worshippers say she's just sampling the Brit pop song. However, everybody knows what a 'sample' is when they browse at Costco and it appears Ms. Ador ate the whole bag before paying.
Yet, even if the 'sampling' may be legal, can ADOR really accuse everyone else of copying with a straight face? And how does Shakatak feel about this situation? Oh yes, I got the receipts. I can't believe MHJ had the nerve to whine about plagiarism! Stealing someone else's music from a different country and copying some dance moves and creating a second teenage girl group while both groups belong to the same mother company just don't compare. She should have taken the financial risk and set up her own company, scout, train and debut her creation. Simple. She is in delusion. Grandiose delusion is not that uncommon in the creative industry. Because they want to be big and special so deeply, when they repeatedly want and fantasize for a long time so much, they get confused from fantasy to reality in the end. Her ill guided aspiration to be big and creative probably brought her to those illusions that everyone copied her work because she is so creative. She seems to need some rest to reflect on her own confusion to sort it out. A poor lady. I feel for her desperation.

She copied way before Shakatak, NJ's Attention is a direct copy of Japanese Group SPEED's Body and Soul, from styling, setting (the stadium at the back), choreo and even down to the camera angles. She prob thought she's getting away with it (and she did for a little while) cause most NJ fans never nee it existed and Jpop isn't as big as Kpop as a whole

The songs are musically identical. You can only sue for damages, so Hybe would be justified to shelve the song and commercials and hit MHJ with the hammer.
@@cjtay they would have paid the existing artists though that's the difference. You can't just take something and even just alter it with without getting permission from the original owner. In same case the original artist might weaver any royalities (fee's) or you get permission but also agree on either a fix one off payment and/or a small up front payment and on going small percentage or of sales/streaming revenue from said song depending on the contract made. @@cjtay historically, BigHit pays to use music that they sample or rework. The first two examles that come to mind for me are "Am I Wrong" which gave Keb' Mo a producer/writer credit for the use of his work and "Chicken Noodle Soup" by J-Hope and Becky G.

It's not even just the issue with "Bubblegum" and "Easier Said Than Done" by Shakatak. There are a lot of people pointing out the STARTLING similarities between the MV for New Jeans song "Attention", and that of the 1996 MV for "Body & Soul" by the Japanese girl group SPEED. The resemblance in Styling - and even complete SCENES - has a lot of people going "Hmm. Interesting."
There seems to be a trend developing. Perhaps Min Heejin's concepts are not as "original" as she wants people to believe. And in these two cases the similarities are startling - dear I say, blatant? - and so it seems hypocritical of her to accuse others of "copying" her.
Even if the "copying" - or outright Plagiarism - was done by her subordinates, she should be on top of things; and bears ultimate responsibility. "The Buck Stops With Her".

At least when BTS uses a sample they first get permission to use it. They will even pay to use it. On top of that they always credit the original artists.

Watched the NJ music video via link you provided (ty!) and there are many comments complaining that HYBE has not advertised the song and that there are no CZcams Shorts for it. It is ADOR's responsibility to promote the song and create/upload shorts for it, not HYBE's, correct?

The fact they are going to use this in a commercial use for advertising, and they already have it lined up with the Japanese firm, is outrageous. I wonder if the Japanese company who has signed to use the NJ song in their ads is aware of the potential legal tangle that may be involved? I bet not. If they knew what may be potentially a loud, public legal battle, I bet they would drop them really quick, and avoid being affected by the scandal. The more I hear about this woman, the more I am convinced that she is pure evil.

1. Crediting someone does not bypass copyright laws. This is an internet myth. You still need a license and depending on that license, you may be required to credit them. If anything, crediting someone without permission shows you were aware of the source and still tried to cheat them of their royalties.
2. Even sampling requires legal permission (clearance) from the original copyright holders. Sampling doesn't come under fair use. Only things like a parody come under fair use.
3. Concepts are not copyrighted because they are not unique. Choreographies cannot be usually copyrighted because they are not unique (it is very very rare like Beyonce's 'Single Ladies'). However some elements of a song are very much protected by copyright like the lyrics and melody.
4. The melody by itself is copyrighted content. Harmonies, pitch, tempo do not matter if the melody is recognizable enough. If you used just a recognizable melody without permission that counts as copyright infringement.
I would assume they were sensible and got the required license but with how entitled they've been acting I really can't say. These are the same people who encouraged their employees to have freelance contracts with advertisers instead of paying them incentives. 🤷♀

Once DJ / Producer 250 was mentioned, any uncertainty there may have been was lifted for me. SM is prolific in "Kpop Remake vs Original Artist" compilations (source material from Bruno Mars, Kesha, movie soundtracks, even an ex-Disney kid 🐭just to name a few).
The company has appeared to be generally savvy in paying dues / giving credit, so there doesn't seem to be any public blow ups or potential career-crippling lawsuits. If MHJ was behind the creative re-branding of any of those now classic SM re-imaginings arrangements, I wonder what has happened to change nearly two decades of success.
Min Hee Jin may work well with Lee Soo Man. But the world has moved on from backyard gangster million dollar kpop company. It is now global multinational billion dollar companies. Perhaps that’s what’s changed.
The fact that miss MHJ refuses to use Hybe's own music production teams they have invested since BTS built Hybe and use 250 and Jin-su Park from Bad & Natives Records she used to work with at SM.
2021 did Hybe invested major on in-house music production when they used BTS earned money for good things at the company. Aside from BigHit's Slow Rabbit, Pdogg, Supreme Boi and hitman bang they had a joint-venture with CJ on Belift where Wonderkid and Cashcow were hired as one production team under Belift to work on Enhypen's discography.
Big investment in 2021 when they decided to give Source Music its own music production team. 13 (Score/Megatone) in late 2021 and Ju-hwan Noh in Sep 2023.
MHJ had choices to use within Hybe labels but she rather work with her former partners at SM. That is a red flag from the beginning.
The audacity Koreans have towards Bang PD to compare him to Yasushi Akimoto must be stans of other companies like SM or YG. The difference is Bang is a music producer, Akimoto-sensei is a lyricist and a producer of girl groups that order music from freelancers and private recording companies who send in recorded demos to him he listened together with sound producers from different companies like Sony Music Japan if it applies to Sakamichi. Hybe gives their artists freedom to grow and develop. It's not a idol factory as MHJ wants the media to say about Hybe and Bang PD.
Her smear campaign against Hybe and Bang PD in May is working for short term. I don't think stans of SM will keep up in long term. Korean Bunnies will eventually give up on bullying ILLIT and call their Magnetic song, plagiarism. Because it was only the concept of the MV that was accused for plagiarism, not the song itself. Slow Rabbit is more original than any music producer MHJ partners with.
My first impression of NewJeans in 2022 it looked like a SM group than a BigHit/Hybe group to me. Call them unique or original was only coming from their deluded fans. A fandom of SM accused ILLIT's Lucky Girl Syndrome for plagiarising a intro sample when it was produced by the LA producer, Stint. The artist didn't even care to sue Belift because it was nothing burger of the case.
The problem with Bunnies majority contains SM stans MHJ promoted NJ in 2022 to support them. That's why they surpassed Le Sserafim's subscribers with nearly 2 million despite the edge LSF had with IZ*ONE fans. That's where all the hate comes from towards other Hybe artists. Bang PD hired a trojan horse in 2019 by mistake.
In my opinion they need to dissolve ADOR as soon as possible and get MHJ out from Hybe. These SM stans are cancer to the industry.

He literally copied a lot of pop songs from Milli Vanilli to Smashing Pumpkins, but he never admitted, and his fans never admitted which is the worst part of all this. Idk about music, but I do have some idea when it comes to IP like research articles and patents. The companies that help authors publicise/write/translate research articles that can be published in well known research magazines and stuff have a certain software/s. When you put in your written article into this software, it runs a match through all the reearch articles published across internet and gives you results in terms of % of how much of your article matches an already published article if the match % exceeds a certain point they'll mark it as infringement(even if you wrote it on your own). That is just how IP works, it does not matter if you came up with an idea on your own if it already exists/been publicised by someone else and has been copyrighted in your country/all over world you can't publish it. And if you do, you can be fined for infringement even if you are unaware. I hope the band sue/ file a petition against HYBE so HYBE can use it as proof of deriliction/breach of Duty on MHJ's part and kick her to the curb atleast.

Apparently NJ will being going on a long vacation after June or July. I tmakes sense as they have to re-do the entire business, or put the NJ group under another label IF they decide to stick together. I started checking up KPOP because of BTS, I remember back in 2018, when I became fan of BTS, I did check on other previous KPOP groups, and to my surprise, SM groups had a lot of Western sampling and covers. Not surprisingly, this producer who worked at SM before will incorporate Western songs into NewJeans' songs.

One of the reasons why New Jeans was successful is the fact that Hybe now has Ithaca Holdings and all the connections so that all of HYBE's artist can benefit when there's a new release, new artist etc. If MHJ created New Jeans when she was in SM (hypothetical) SM doesn't have the connection in US the way Hybe do. So she can't really claim that the success of NJ is because of her. Its HYBE's money, capital, connections, that paved the way + the talent, her "creative", music etc COMBINED. Not a single deciding factor why New Jeans was successful.
