How To Fix explorer.exe Crashing In Windows 10

- This tutorial will show you how to fix the explorer.exe process as needed in Windows 10. We will accomplish this by stoping and restarting the explorer.exe process in Windows 10.
This tutorial should work for all major computer hardware manufactures that include Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1 and Windows 10 in their products (Dell, HP, Acer, Asus, Toshiba, Lenovo, Samsung, and so forth).
If your Taskbar, System Tray, or Start menu acts up, you might be tempted to restart your PC. Instead, you can usually just restart Windows Explorer-and Windows makes it pretty easy.
Windows Explorer (Explorer.exe) is a program manager process that provides the graphical interface you use to interact with most of Windows-the Start menu, taskbar, notification area, and File Explorer. Occasionally, any of these pieces that make up the Windows graphical shell can start acting strangely or even hang. Just like you can close and restart an app that’s acting up, you can also close and restart Windows Explorer. Restarting Windows Explorer can also be handy if you’ve just installed a new app or applied a Registry tweak that would normally require you to restart your PC. Restarting Explorer doesn’t always work in those cases, but it’s easy enough to try it first if you want to avoid a full restart.
Task Manager offers the traditional way to restart Windows Explorer. It was overhauled for Windows 8 and 10, so we’ve got instructions for you whether you’re using those or Windows 7.
In Windows 8 or 10, open Task Manager by right-clicking any empty area on your taskbar and then clicking “Task Manager.” You can also hit Start and search for “task manager,” which might be more useful to you if you’re looking at the Start screen instead of the desktop in Windows 8. And if you favor keyboard shortcuts, just press Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
If your Task Manager window looks like the example below, click “More details” at the bottom to see the detailed interface.
The “Process” tab of the Task Manager window shows you apps and background processes currently running on your PC. Scroll down the list of what’s running and find “Windows Explorer.” If you currently have a File Explorer window open, you’ll see it right near the top in the “Apps” section. Otherwise, you’ll find it toward the bottom of the “Background Processes” section. To restart, just select “Windows Explorer” and then click the “Restart” button.
That’s all you should have to do. It may take a few seconds and things like your taskbar and Start menu may disappear momentarily, but when it restarts, things should behave better and you can exit Task Manager.
This tutorial will apply for computers, laptops, desktops,and tablets running the Windows 10, Windows 8/8.1, Windows 7 operating systems.Works for all major computer manufactures (Dell, HP, Acer, Asus, Toshiba, Lenovo, Samsung).

i was nervous because i hit end task (i was trying to end FILE explorer and thought that was it) and the screen became dark. i panicked because i believed that i broke the laptop and all files were gone but thankfully i ran into this vid and all i can say is that this helped me a lot 🙂 thanks and keep up the good work

I'm watching this 4 years later. Thanks for the video. I normally use this method when I lose icons in the tray. Ctrl + Shift + Esc opens Task Manager directly. I was getting a weird error that said: WindowsExplorer.exe cannot open this type of application. I noticed this happening when I turned on/off Bluetooth. So bizarre, yesterday was the first time it happened.

Every second it does a pop saying "Click on ok to terminate this program." I clicked ok btw and I exited I did what you did but it closes in a second before I could reach the explorer.exe

Hit ctrl + alt + del-task manager,on file-run new task - type explorer.exe.... on process locate explorer.exe,restart the process... if this helps good otherwise go on cmd,type sfc /scannow,sometimes explorer.exe gets corrupts.

I think that my problem is that Explorer keeps suspending then restarting, but no matter how many times I restart my pc and unplug it, explorer keeps restarting making it impossible to use my taskbar or even use any applications. For more information, Whenever Explorer restarts, my screen goes blue (my taskbar theme color) for a second and then it shows my home screen again. It does it around every 10 seconds, or whenever I click.

thanks im 13 a previous xp user i do not have much experience with windows 10 .some youtube guy named thiojoe said if you end some tasks in the task manager your laptop will run better so i saw a explorer in the bottom of the task manager i randomly ended some tasks so i deleted explorer then suddenly all things went black i panicked that i broke my laptop my mom bought on my birthday.i had no chance to search on youtube with my xp laptop.then i saw your video very helpful.thanks.GOD BLESS YOU

I did both restart and end task. After hitting end task everything got screwed up. Now explorer is crashed, none of my files are accessible including computer properties. The windows open but only partial icons are visible, no words, task manager is the same way. I can't type in explorer because when I go to the area where the file tab would be to open new task the box that opens is a thin narrow box that I can't type into. This is a disaster and I would not recommend anyone hit end task for explorer...

What if you can't pull up task manager? I just had to restart my computer because task manager would not come up during a windows explorer crash. I couldn't ctrl+alt+del, couldn't hit the windows key, nothing... I've had to restart explorer enough times but I've never been in a situation where task manager was also frozen until now.

hello, i’m quite late to this video but my laptop has a black screen and ive seen a lot of videos saying to press ctrl alt and delete, and click task manager. i’ve been clicking task manager and it gives me a little tab saying “driver tonic crashed program alert, task manager launcher has crashed!” and it says to run a full scan. i was looking at a video saying it’s not safe to click run a full scan, but every time i click driver tonic that same tab pops up. should i run a full scan or what do i do? ive tried looking for videos about this situation, and i haven’t seen one. please help!

On start menu type cmd,right click run as admin,type admin credentials , type sfc /scannow ... it will repair corrupted system file from your pc.. see if it helps.. if problem persist upload screenshot of error to my acc. it will be glad to help anyone without any intention..

In my case it was opening on a secondary screen that was not in used. Fixed when selected only one screen.

Are you using the media creation tool? Use the media creation too and boot your computer from the utility and run the repair options from there. Also check your spelling and drive letter.

I'm literally internally panicking here. I was trying to delete a folder that can't be removed even using the remon.exe coz there are no results. While i look for the folder i'm going to delete i mistakenly clicked explorer.exe thinking that that would be the answer to finally delete that damn folder. So sorry to bother u but ah.
