    TIME STAMPS below for your viewing pleasure! Terribly sorry for such a long video but Pontus has so military units to talk about that I struggled to shut up haha. I ended up cutting out as much as I could but originally this video was around 1 hour 20 minutes or so.

    Something to consider for you all, this is for the 1.2.6 DEI build. I realize 1.2.7 has almost been made official but I won't be updating until I finish my current campaign in order to avoid causing issues. I will still keep doing Faction Overview videos on the 1.2.6 build but I will avoid factions that have been altered heavily by the new update, such as the Nervii. Generally speaking though, the update did not affect too many factions in a dramatic fashion (See my update video if you like).

It was video games that got me interested in history to be honest. I would start with alexander the great..read about his conquests, issues, politic sqables..then movie into how Rome became a powehouse, with its fight with Veii that capitol of the Estruceans(sp?)..then roll into carthage.

      I did a Massalia playthrough on Divide et Impera on Normal and it was extremely fun. Massalia being a Helennic state in a Gallic-celtic land means they have the hoplites that the celts don't have... and they also can AoR Gallic/Celtic cavalry and swordsman in early game. In late game they get greek army reforms and cloned Roman-Style legionnairies which makes for some insane craziness where you can combine heavy hoplites, with amazing swordsman and good-enough cavalry.

    I would disagree with your statement that Hoplites fulfill the same role as pikes. I often use Hoplites as flank protection for pikes. Pikes are good in the center of an army but for the flanks I prefer spears and swords.

      I meant when you don't have pikes hoplites fulfill the role of a main front line unit, such as for Athens, Rhodes, Syracuse, etc. Your right though when you do have pikes, hoplites or other spears are a good option for the flanks.

    @andresalphie5400 Před 3 lety +1

    Regarding your question about the name hepteres:
    This is linked to the Greek number 7
    The Greeks used to name their warships by classes that are based on the numbers of roars on each side in a section cut of the ship. Similar to the classes for sailboats (three-master)
    So the name combines the 2 Greek words for the number of roars and the word roar (like tworoars).
    Starting with
    2di
    3tri
    4tetra
    5penta
    6hexa
    7hepta
    A hepteres has 7 roars in one line on each sides. This means it must have been gigantic. Although mentioned by historians many naval engineers doubts that such a concept would work.
    In Latin (language of the Romans) the word roar is remiges. So they called their ships e.g. trireme.
    As a trireme already needs approximately 170 roarers plus 20 to 30 sailors and soldiers you can imagine how high the crew would be on a hepteres.

    Good video; however, I don't think you're quite going into unit stats with a full picture of how Total War: Rome 2's mechanics work. Chiefly, armor. Armor is useful, but much less so than in previous games. Armor just takes away damage from successful hits. Also, despite it being a hidden stat, the most important anti-ranged stat is missile block chance, given from shields. So from the front or left side, units will have a certain % chance to block all hits at range. Those Spadabara spear/archer units aren't amazing, but they have a very high missile block chance, making them effective for tanking ranged fire--all thanks to their giant wicker shields. Melee stats are still trash though, and one an arrow gets past the shield it does a lot of damage.

    • @Immersaholic
      @Immersaholic  Před 3 lety +4

      Thanks for watching mate! I appreciate your comment but due to the ambiguity of the nature of block chance I generally prefer having high armored units. A large shield means you have just a chance of the shot being blocked. Albeit a good chance but then that chance goes up or down depending entirely on the engagement (Such as direction from the shooter, wind speed, weather, trajectory, elevation, etc). Then if you have a unit with no armor the potential for that unit to die becomes even more magnified. Whereas armor, although still gives a chance of protection, it is not influenced by so many potential factors. If a unit gets shot by a skirmisher from behind, they will still have the chance to take less damage; however, a unit like what you mentioned would almost definitely be killed since their shield is on the front. Hence in theory the chance for less damage to occur should be higher for the more heavily armored unit.
      Perhaps I shouldn't be so harsh on units with low armor but again, without knowing hard stats of shield block chance and the insane amount of factors that can go into projectiles being fired, I generally will still value high armor units greater.

      Interesting, what do you think Pontus needs then?

    • @rolo8950
      @rolo8950 Před rokem

      Personally, I think that their main roster is just a lot of light infantry and cav. If you play campaign you'll notice pontus is surrounded by enemies including Armenia which I view as having a better roster than pontus. Like pontus heavy infantry and cav are beaten out by some of their enemies around them. I just feel like pontus doesn't have one set of units that they specialize in and so it's hard to build a solid army for the long-term game. I find myself hunting for mercenaries in a lot of my games. And it's kind of sucks because pontus has a robust history. A history that includes the leaders you start with on turn one who lead a rebellion against the Romans and really gave them a run for their money. But if you try to compete in game with Rome and other factions you are definitely an underdog. But, in fact I believe that most of the Greco factions have weak rosters. Rhodes, Athens, and even Sparta have terrible rosters in my opinion and they aren't suitable after the early game. Epirus has a better roster than most of them and after Pyrrhus dies Epirus largely fades from history for a while, yet they have one of the best Greek rosters in my opinion. They start with some really freaking good heavy infantry right off the bat and war elephants which are very useful if you know how to use them.

    • @rolo8950
      @rolo8950 Před rokem

      @@Immersaholic in conclusion I think pontus is nothing to write home about, mediocre roster and lackluster. There isn't like one specific unit I can say I really like or is really reliable on their roster. Like their best infantry unit is a generals body guard but it's useless if it's the only one you have. Meanwhile Armenia has legionnaires and nahakaar warriors who's AP damage is out of this world. Along with their even more extensive calvary options.

    • @Konrad_IV
