    I'm a life-long GM fan, Chevrolet in particular. I ordered a MY23 Corvette Z51 and took delivery at the NCM. What sours my enthusiasm for GM and the C8Z are the way GM is willing to let the dealers make more money off of a C8Z than that of even what GM makes. No respect for the consumer, GM just cowers and says "we can't control what the dealers do." GM sure as Hell can control what they dealers do - they can stop rewarding the bad dealers with additional allocation.
    I was interested in an AT4X HD but grew tired of GM dealers wanting ADM; quite frankly, I'm tired of MSRP at these interest rates. The UAW's making a huge mistake asking for such a big raise - I will not continue to buy their products like I have over the last twenty years at these prices and interst rates. I ended up finding a heavily discounted Ram 2500 HD Rebel with a Cummins at a huge discount. It was made in Mexico.

    I have to agree that the costs are getting too steep for many to handle. Inflation or corporate/dealer greed or government or union, it doesn’t matter. I bought a 2019 C7 Z06 for about $73k (discounts were available then). Great car and plenty fast. Now a “base” Z06 is 50% more than I paid for that car. I have the money to afford either but it’s not like my income went up in the past 4 years. For people on a smaller income/budget they are priced out completely. No longer a middle class dream car for sure.

      especially the z06. in 2006 the MSRP was 65k. even someone making 100k a year could easily afford it. now 165k msrp? really 100k more, that's just asking to get raped on price. I'm one of those priced out. I can afford to buy 80k max, but not 150k for a z06.

      I have a C7 ZR1 ZTK and when I bought it the MSRP was $122,095. However, no one I know of, including myself, payed that. It was far more, and 150K plus was commonplace and often what the C7 is today.

    I agree 💯 percent buddy. They’re making it to where most won’t be able to afford it and even if you can possibly manage to you won’t if you have a responsible side and look out for your financial well being. It’s getting to the point of not wanting to afford it even if you can because it ls not worth it.

    You spoke in the right direction. Every year since the 2020 mid engine C8 came on the scene there has been a steady increase from 59k till the 2024 70k. Thats 11k in 4 years with no end in sight. As long as the Corvette continues to sell well, there will continue to be increases. Which in turn helps the already owners if they decide to sell theirs

    You nailed it Mike! The Corvette is no longer the middle class dream car and GM doesn't seem to care. Why would they with the profits of today? Since more exotic car buyers are buying the Corvette to have in their collection, my guess they are their new market. Before even Z06s were for the middle class and the ZR1s were you can say, for the upper middle class. Now the Z06/ERAY is for the upper middle class and any model after that will be for the top 1%. Sad times...

    It’s extremely frustrating when your dream was a Z06. I had no idea it would be so difficult to buy a 6 figure vehicle. Sold my 17 ZL1 over a year ago to get in line not realizing what a shit show this would be. I am no where near getting a car at MSRP and not willing to pay ADMs, for a car that was already a stretch of what I thought was a reasonable price…. And the bar keeps going up as I am stuck waiting and waiting on a car I may never see. Getting extremely frustrated and there is no other car out there that stirs my soul like the idea of top level Corvette. Been a fan since I was about 7 or 8, and now I am 42 and still waiting.

    I've been saving for a C8 ZO6 for 7 years now. And the price keeps going up. Plus most dealers charging over MSRP. I'm On the list for a Z06 With 2 dealerships. I'm trying to stay positive, but it's hard when you only make 50,000 a year. And the price is continued to go up. And they skip over you because you're not willing to pay over MSRP. So yes, they are pricing it where the average Joe can't afford it anymore. 😢

    GM reads the newspapers as well. As long as potential Corvette owners are willing to pay insane DMAs or bid up cars in the secondary market, GM will keep increasing prices on the car. Very short sighted on their part. Things will only change when consumers start voting with their wallets and refuse to pay unrealistic market pricing for the car. Until then GM, its dealerships and aftermarket outlets will price around whatever the market will bear.

    At $70k the C8 is an amazing car with few rivals. Demand still outweighs production and the price increase will have little effect on that. Perhaps in a couple years this type of increase would be consequential, but for now it seems like smart business.

    I bought mine in 2018 (4 y.o. car) with very low mileage (around 4k miles).
    It was a car probably sold brand new in the US for around 60-70ish K, i had to pay it 85k Euros (at the time around 100k usd) for an used one!
    Same thing right now with the C8s.
    There are used (very low mileage) and brand new ones, sold for not less than 120 - 130k Euros (around 150k usd) for a base C8!

    The price increases are justified by the effects of inflation and the consistent demand for the product. Most businesses will take advantage of this opportunity. But I think due to the quantity being produced that the dream is still alive for the middle class if only for a used car in another few years.

  • @KRGruner
    @KRGruner Před 7 měsíci +8

    If you adjust for inflation, actually Corvette prices have not increased that much over the years. The actual problem is that government policies have amounted to no less than a direct attack on the middle class (target market for the Corvette), with significant reductions in purchasing power over the past decades, and especially in the past three years which have been catastrophic. This is not GM's fault. I don't want to get political here but we all know where to point the finger.

    Super presentation and you asked the right question. The easy answer is YES, GM is pricing the C8 into a new, niche market, and leaving the classic middle class behind. When you look at the 'new' buyers, never had a Corvette before, where do they come from - Porsche, Lexus, MB, and other high end cars. Will these buyers stay with Corvette like the older generations - I doubt it. When the next C8 model comes out (ZR1) with a MSRP of at least $160K and with options, over $200K, what middle class buy will be able to afford one? I am afraid that the higher GM goes with performance and cost, the smaller of a market they will find. Have you noticed that the younger generations are not 'car' people, like we were in the late 50s, 60s, and early 70s? a lot of the kids do not have or want a driver's license. How many of them will buy a future Corvette? As we 'baby boomers' die off, I am afraid that the new Corvette market will see significant changes. Until the floor drops out, GM is milking the Corvette for all they can until one day when the bean counters ask, "Why can't you sell a $200K Corvette any more? And the next sound you hear will be the gate closing on the Corvette plant. Glad I will not see it.

I am on a waiting list for the E-Ray, but between the dealer markup and now a $2000.00 price increase before one Eray has been delvered is a bit much. Does the extra $2000.00 prcce me out, no of cource not. But it has made me consider changing directions, getting a classic, and maybe a C-5 ZO6 and I will still have change. Funny I have had a lot of Corvettes and my wife drives BMW's 335IS X3M40 M3 never had a single issue with any of the BMW's and they didnt turn into rattle boxes like my Vettes did. I have a paid off C7Z and thats my last Corvette I will own. If I am going to spend 200K on a sports car its defiantly not going to be a GM product. The 1% are not buying Corvettes if you have been in the car scene long enough you see those people buy GT3RS GT2RS 488GTB Lambos and lots of other cars of much higher quality sports. Just go to the HRE open house in San Diego you wont be seeing many Corvette at events like that for the 1% buyers. The selling point was what a “bargain” Corvette was. Now its not a bargain anymore. $170,000 for a mid level Corvette (not even ZR1) is crazy. Far from being a bargain any longer put a 2024 GT3RS next to a 2024 C8Z and you dont have to have a degree in engineering to see the quality differences.

    I don't mean to be disrespectful to you Mike, but I think you are incorrect in your premise that a corvette was affordable to the middleclass car buyer. My pop bought a '72 Coupe De Ville new, that car was almost level $7,000.00 delivered. I bought my 72 LT-1 used in 77 and paid 5 grand for the car. The list on it was almost as much as pop's caddy. I remember in the early 60's the only ppl that had sports cars were almost just like the only ppl driving caddys, lincolns, & imperials; they were doctors, lawyers, engineers airline pilots, CPA's. Heck, a 63 fuelie decked out was almost 4k list. I think I disagree with the definition of middleclass that you are using. The corvette was always just like all the other toys, high end earners only. Oh man, i didnt see this video. I commented similar to " killing the corvette dream" on your zr1 post a few minutes ago. I'm glad you did this video for sure. I'm lucky I've been able to afford my cars and collection. I was part of the largest corvette club ( corvettes west) since back in the early 90's . I was a driver for the " dream and drive" corvette marketing campaign and the Cadillac as well where they target potential buyers and they would come out and drive the cars (Dick Gullstrand was running that for GM). A couple of my friends that might not have the funds i do, were still able to get into a corvette z06 and much easier the base model without taking a credit line on their house. The C6 and C7 z06's with msrp's of $65k and $78k respectively. C6 z06 doing the Nürburgring in 7:22 which beat the carrera gt, enzo, gtr, Slr and other exotics by a minimum of 5 seconds. C7 z06 running 7:12. Both easily out the door under $100k easily. Now? its a joke (besides most all year vette prices going up as well) I see some people that waited to get a vette, until their ladder years, because of family obligations, priorities etc, finally being able to get the car they have always waited, unable to ever sniff a z06 or zr1 and be lucky to grab a c8 if anything with them selling for over $100k new and used in the $90k dollar range. $60k msrp hype. NOT! Then blame it all on the chips and pandemic? smfh we are way past that. Dealers raping people and GM does nothing. People say GM "can't" force the dealers to stop gouging the customer , THEY CAN. Very simple, cut off the supply/allocation to those dealerships, simple as that. But its alllll ABOUT MONEYYY.

    I have been watching how the C8 price increases have come over the last 3 years, however, I watched your current video that showed prices will drop as supply increases. I have tossed it around on buying one, however, for to finance the car, I would be putting 60% down or a little more and could purchase a new one. I would only be buying the standard C8 as a convertible some of the options. I have been patient and figured prices would drop once supply increased.

    I’ve been thinking this very thing since the C8 Z06 price reveal.
    I believe even though they are currently selling every car before they are built, it will not be sustainable with further price increases along with climbing interest rates.
    The Corvette has always been an affordable mass produced weekend sports car for the average middle class American, and I believe that is what sustained it through some very tough times (70’s &80’s particularly) when the power and performance sucked.
    If Chevrolet continues to seek the world class exclusive super car status they appear to be pursuing, I believe they will ultimately kill the American Corvette Dream and the car line itself. It has come very close to happening before.

    Thank you for making this video. Just yesterday I went to Chevys build site and built out a 2lt with not that many options and it came out to 85k! All I choose was the z51 package and nicer seats. 85k for a non z06 and not even a fully loaded vette is crazy. But to be honest it’s all cars. My 2023 2ss 1le had an msrp of 55k. Ten years ago a zl1 had an msrp of 55k. I don’t think they want regular people buying cars anymore :( if it weren’t for all the msrp increases throughout the life of the 6th gen Camaro I may have been able to swing a zl1 if it still had its 2017 msrp. It’s not like they updated rhe 6th gen Camaro throughout its life in order to justify the msrp increases.

    I agree with the premise of the video and what you are saying, but let's be fair... We have this thing called inflation and practically everything is increasing in price. Then there is the strike going on. Even if they lower or keep prices the same, then that's just that much more money the scalpers flipping these on auction sites will make. Comments can call it chevy's greed, but it's basic supply and demand. Eventually supply will be able to keep up/fill demand and prices will steady out.

    I agree but more to the extent of the dealer mark up. My Z06 was 144k I paid 134k for a 19ZR1 in 2018 so not crazy. Except that I spent 35k over for the C8 which at the time seemed pretty good. But still not a good feeling being gouged. And that part is making it harder to obtain. I’m hoping I can afford a C8ZR1 but will see.

It’s now going to rival some European manufacturers in a new way price! Stop buying them!!! With a multi year wait list for a Z06 what did you expect? The C8 price increase was absolutely stupid. The C8 demand is not that strong as to justify the latest price increase.

    I cannot totally blame GM, they made a great product and we the consumer in our eagerness to own, help facilitate the sharp price increases. Let’s remember that GM was ecstatic announcing the price under $60k. We the consumers and mostly the flippers controlled this market. Now, unfortunately for GM, once the newness is gone,so will their core base for the corvette. Never lose ur base. This will cost GM because they settled for short term profits over long term loyalty to customers. Mass production would have been a simple fix to control the flippers and to keep the overzealous consumer from agreeing to pay ridiculous markups. Those extra short term billions will cost them everything in the near future.

I understand prices go up but this car has gotten outrageous and is no longer affordable. I’m the target market they’ve always tried to attract. They had me and now they lost me. Maybe this explains why I still haven’t seen one new c8Z on the road…. But this isn’t just with the corvette. Everything that’s gone on over the past few years is killing the American dream and the middle class

  • @robsa0
    @robsa0 Před 7 měsíci +4

    Mike, two things:
    1) Inflation. You should discuss the present value of the $ with each of your price increase quotes.
    2) GM isn't killing the dream, dealers are. 30-50% markups over msrp on the C8 have killed many dreams. It's actually good that GM is increasing MSRP so fast because it will take the $ people are willing to spend on the C8 away from worthless dealers and give it back to GM.

    • @thereissomecoolstuff
      @thereissomecoolstuff Před 7 měsíci +3

      You can’t say that without knowing the parts and material cost of the car. The car shouldn’t cost more than $35k based on parts. Add labor and automation and design. The company is making a lot of money on the backs of production worker especially if you add dealer markup. Harley went through all of this in the early 2000’s. The dealers were adding huge markups. The workers got pissed. They got a better contract next time around. The UAW deserves the same.

      @runningdebate2670 Před 7 měsíci +1

      @thereissomecoolstuff that's a joke, 35k? What about all the research and development they put into these cars.... You know absolutely nothing. GM doesn't make money on dealer markups either so dunno why you even made mention of that. They make nearly 80k and over 100k with OT and you think that isn't increasing the price of cars? Asking for a 40% raise and to work 32hrs a week GTFO.

    • @cassiespencer6134

      A quick search led to this:
      "The majority of UAW wages currently range between $16.35 (25th percentile) to $20.19 (75th percentile) across the United States. The average pay range for a UAW worker varies little (about $3.85), which suggests that regardless of location, there are not many opportunities for increased pay or advancement, even with several years of experience." That results in ones average UAW wage being in the mid 40's.

    • @runningdebate2670
      @runningdebate2670 Před 7 měsíci

      @cassiespencer6134 Right, that's accurate, that same site says I make 75k and I made 220k last year in my job. Ziprecruitrr is trash and none of those are accurate. You go down the next site days 28$ an hour, the department of labor says north of 27 an hour. So yeah you can guess all you want. Also they're getting benefits, which is worth like 15 an hour, plus they're paying union dues, trust me if they didn't make crap their union wouldn't have 875mil sitting in an account to strike when they just went on strike last contract.... You think they accumulated that much money paying pennies in dues and didn't make any money for themselves? How much does someone that literally stands there and fastens a few bolts deserve? It's not a skilled trade and anyone can do it? Why would any company stay here when they can just outsource it? Companies are made to be profitable if they aren't what's the point of staying in business?

    Everything is going up a mustang is up to $60k now. A ZO6 is going to destroy cars that cost 2-6 times as much. Its still a great deal. The ZO6 and ZR1 is a lot more car than previous vets of course its going to cost more. Sting ray is still a great car for not much more than a challenger mustang or a camaro. If anything is being killed its those cars. Look ay pickup trucks paying over $100k for top of line pickup. The raptor r selling for $180. In 2023 vet sales were up from 2022. Why the price increase is because of better car more HP that will run with or beat anything.
    Wake up its not just the vet its everything. Would it be cool if vet was still around $60k ya but those days r gone.

    Couldn't agree more. GM will push its profit margins higher to the point where a mid-engine Mustang may pick where GM left us. Always said they should have kept a front engine model in the lineup. Ferrari has both and they're all gorgeous and sell. Even Porsche has a tiered rear engine model lineup with the 911s & 718s. Last point is I felt the SUV type was an extension/growth path for the Corvette and out came the Nay Sayers but what has Ferrari done? Lamborghini? Porsche? 🤔EXACTLY that....
