- Riding Magneto to Velociraptor at Sentiers Du Moulin in Quebec. Taking all the A-lines this is might be one of the more challenging trails I've ridden in the eastern parts of North America. Slow Speed, Chunky Tech, bordering on Trials.

Welcome back to SDM Phil, and thank you for talking about Magneto and Velo-ciraptor ✌ It was intentional for the trail to be difficult to find. It was part of the concept of the trailbuilders from LB-Cycle : "Those who want to ride it will find it ;-)"
I kind of figured it was deliberate once i noticed where the trail signs were. Even knowing approximately where it was I definitely did not spot it. Super fun trail!
Some trail builder has a big ol' smile on their face from the words "this might be one of the hardest trails I've ever done" escaping the lips of Phil Kmetz on video.
They may not know why they're suddenly smiling, or they might be watching this video.
Either way, that's one hell of a compliment.
For sure 🙂
It's hard to believe how much "Aww, hell no!" they built into one trail. Thanks, Phil, for taking me some place I'll NEVER see in person.
It is worth the trip tho! It consist of 3 different hill, with 3 style of riding and every trail is absolutely awesome! You can get cheap Airbnb and mont-saint-Anne is only an hour away
@@stillburningstrong One number for ya: 66 (age). Another number: 3. (Broken bones, thanks to Angel Fire, NM.) Nope, this trail is off my list. Have been to Kingdom and Valee Bras du Nord, tho. (But NOT Full Nelson.)
You nailed it like a boss Phil, next on your bucket list: Nosferatu in Empire 47
That's been on my radar! Had we not gotten the rain that we did I would have gone there on our way out, but as it a few of the roads I needed to take to get back home were flooded only a few hours after I left.
@@SkillsWithPhil Yeah that storm was something and left marks everywhere, safety first
This has so many aspects of a slow speed techy BC trail. Amazing work by the builders.
It’s a great day when Phil posts, incredible rider and always meeting awesome people and his laugh always makes us smile 🔥
My background is in jeeps, ATVs, and side-by-side‘s. Just getting into MTBs and I absolutely LOVE this technical shit! You guys killed it!
Love Ian still showing his BMX roots by rocking NO PADS. Absolute mad man 😂😂
That is amazing, reminds me of the early days riding on the Shore. The terrain dictates the route down the mountain, sometimes there is no obvious route, so you have tight janky turns and rolls. I especially love the tech uphill in the first sections, true skills required, there is no faking that stuff.
Awesome riding as always. It took me at least 5-6 times to get this trail without any dab...on good conditions. That proline at 8min40, never had it tho ! Props to that one !
I think it would take me about the same to get it 100% clean. There are a lot of little crux moves throughout the whole thing that just keep you on your toes. I actually just watched your video on this after i got home.
Are there any other places in QC that are similar to sector maelstrom? The terrain, trail building and scenery is all very interesting, and much more interesting than flow trails. That being said I do need to get back to Bromont and I still have yet to ride MSA.
@@SkillsWithPhil Sector Maelström is a kind of his own. You could Check out Mont Ste-Marie near Ottawa. Maibock and Boneshaker has some cool lines .
Bromont definitely has some spicy lines too, but must of them are not on the map!
@@lachevre_mtb +1 to Mont Ste-Marie, but let's not forget about the one and only Lager!
Great trail, great riding! Love these kinds of technical trails. So much fun!! So challenging. The trail reminds me of some of the Duluth, MN and North Shore of Lake Superior trails. Rocky, gnarly, natural trails. The trails test all of your mountain bike skills.
Awesome ! Love the up hill that was satisfying to watch you crush it
Love the Quebec Content! 🔥
What an amazing trail! 😎
Dude, you're unbelievable. So much skill on a bike.
Real cool looking trail. Thanks for sharing. Agree with the others, great when we get a video from you.
I really enjoy these slower technical descents. Its a good change of pace from most DH trails
Hell yeah! 🍁
Nice to see you riding in Québec ! Great video
Awesome riding as usual, lets just say that when I ride Magneto it doesn't look like that hehe
Trial is savage. Took me 4 tries to get that rock line at 9:40. Savage.
That is one menacing looking trail 🚲🪨
You tired me out just watching that! That must be a really technical path.
that is so sick
I love your videos ❤
Fantastic riding guys! Way beyond my skills!
Been there but didn't know they had cabins. Thanks for the info
Holy crap…nice trail!
Sooo epik awesome trail 🤘
its a good day when phil uploads
OMG you are human….. thank you for the amazing ride Phil
That was gnarly...
Sick place !
Thats a crazy trail
We were at sdm a couple of weeks back, what an awesome place!
Underrated place
Sick!
that's gnarly.
A bit harder than Thunder, Amazing to see how well you rode these trails.
Hey Phil, love how you added what bike you are riding and some details. 2.00
👌 mint!
Insane is an understatement
More of an obstacle course than a trail!
This has my heart rate going!!!
Mine too haha!
I’m tired just watching this😂 nice work 👏
Hey allo Phil, je t'ai vu dans le parking, tu étais sur ton départ. Super vidéo 👌
I would say (when it comes to legal trails obv) Magneto is probably one of the hardest to clean, because of the janky techy climbs. But there's harder, more engaged and relentless downhills around, especially at MSA.
Guy turns up in shorts and tee, open face and zero armor
Audience: how hard can it be 😂😂
I'm hitting sdm on friday can't wait
We were there not long ago, it’s even better then what you can expect!
You should check out Greek Peak in Courtland NY sometime.
Yo sick mullet bro! That’s awesome I got one too 😂
Brutal
love your vids kee going i am also started making youtube ids because you inspired me
10:12 - Mountain biking sure does have a lot of "not to be taken out of context" moments
Also, really broad skillset required for this trail! I think trials skills are required for some sections. Nice that they anchored a fence into the rock when the trail goes "steep section>cliff"... 😬
What a crazy and super interesting trail. The industry keeps trying to kill 27.5 but it looks like a nimble bike (or at least a mullet setup) could have its advantages here with those tight turns.
There is something to be said about 27.5 becoming harder to find. However wheel size isn't as big of an issue as wheelbase and head angle when it comes to tight turns like that.
@@SkillsWithPhil Can't argue with that. Still love me some 27.5 tho.
This video has redefined my definition of sketch
Lol this was awesome.
“Lots of words” -Phil 😂😂
I know your heart is in building these days, but its nice to see you on the jank!
What stem is that it looks so sick
You breathing hard makes me feel good about myself. Although I'd probably be breathing so hard I'd sound like a shop fan into that microphone.
those front wheel pivots are tech
hey phil i have a question. I have a half shell helmet and was wondering what the best go pro mount is for it?
@Skills With Phill when are you planing on going back to Thunder Mountain again?
Sensor will be my next bike. I just can't find one at the moment with an air shock on the frame.
Should be Physics with Phil, how I defy them!
Just love it no one rides a bike like Phil just sees the world different, lines apon lines..
I live 3 hours away but I've never been there I was sure it was a sort of scenic ride 😂
Phil, serious question. Do you have the skills to ride the redbull hardline course from top to bottom?
Phil, can you please come to camp fortune in Ottawa Canada? we have an uplift bike park and the trail crew has done a ton of working and continues to do so this season. It's gnarly but you'd love it
It looks fun and the trail crew is definitely working hard, but there are places closer to me that look very similar that i still haven't been to
Sick mullet phil
My hair was getting in my eyes so it got the chop!
@@SkillsWithPhil you are one of the few who can actually rock it
Phil you should race the sugarbush enduro it is and esc next weekend
That's the hardest breathing I've heard from u Phil. That was Narley
I can relax a bit more on pure dh trails but trialsy is insanely tiring.
I feel like locally Waterworks in the only thing that really kind of captures this sort of riding.
What weird is lot of terrain in vermont could have trails like this but we just keep building more and more machine built.
Pssst, we don't mention that name. 😉
Anyway many of the SDM trails are also machine built and they are pretty darn good. This trail was definitely hand built, but there's plenty of machine built trails you wouldn't know are machine built unless someone told you around in Vermont. That's what I'm trying to do with the lower half of the trail I'm building at the driving range. czcams.com/video/emIP6hqLxOY/video.html
That being said, SDM and many other places in Quebec charge people to ride but as a result can hire a full time trail crew. In Vermont, in part due to act 250, whether you are building a mtb trail or a huge shopping center, you have to go through the same permitting process if you are commercial operation and charging people a entry fee counts. Act 250 has its benefits but it really makes doing this stuff more challenging. I also suspect Quebec tourism invests heavily on this stuff while our tourism department seems to only care about skiing.
I will also say the geology in Quebec is more comparable to higher altitudes terrain in NH/Maine than it is VT. The geological make up is vastly different.
Not to mention thousands if not tens of thousands hours of volunteer work , mainly from LB-Cycle and Dig SDM community.
Most people of the handbuilt trail are almost totally made by volunteers
@@SkillsWithPhil Indeed, the entrance fees allow us to prioritize trail maintenance. We have a full-time trailbuilding team and equipment dedicated to this task. This year, we have 8 full-time trailbuilders + 1 small excavator, enabling us to keep the trails in good condition throughout the season.
Magneto design and hand build by LB-cycle crew
Velo-ciraptor design and machine-built construction by velosolution canada trailbuilding company.
fucking sick. my favorite kind of trail, although i'd be walking a few spots on that one!!!
Looks like the average ride in the white mountains... you should join sometime Phil
Please do a clip with Dangerous Dave.
11:58 omg that line, is this dangerous dave??
As soon as he entered the unmarked entrance I was like “woah what a hard trail” then I realized that was literally just the entrance and the trail hadn’t started I was floored
That trail makes me want to cover my entire body in knee pads. :)
Then you have Ian with NONE 😂😂
Full commit 😂😂
I’m from ontario canada. When I first rode Quebec trails it was a whole nother level, their trails have no chill.
I haven't put my finger on it yet, but the terrain is similar to Vermont and NH yet it feels way different.
Putting the mountain in mountain biking.
0:40 remember that he got a Bike lol 💀💀
This was probably one of the most sketchy trails I've ever seen someone ride. You handled like a boss, sir.
00:40 lol dude peeing centre-frame
Hope you got to experience poutine during your time!
I have had poutine many times :)
@@SkillsWithPhil As it should be! Hope you enjoyed your stay!
Out of curiosity - do you still ride with a 50mm stem?
My bike check is in the description and has the answer to your question.
I’ve been on that trail and I can assure you, this s&!t is hard! Even harder then what you see on screen!
Is that remmis back yard lol
Hi
Like for phil and remmy collab!
This one is way beyond me.
WICKED
I love mtb and dh trails but that trail nope lol
When I did Wolverine (on a small HT lol), I had this feeling where I felt like if the trail just went down all the time I would love it, but everytime it would throw a techy climb and break my dreams lmao. Still a superb trail tho. We almost did Magneto right after but having to climb Klondike we decided our energy levels were depleted :P
Phil quebec videos are my comfort watch
I hate trails like that. I’d come out with a broken bone or 2. No f’ing doubt 😂. I’ll stick to flow trails and nice jump lines. As always damn nice riding Phil. Haven’t watched any of your vids in a long time.
There's another trail that starts and ends at a similar spot called slab city. That trail is really awesome if you want to avoid dying but still want to ride cool rock slabs!
