- Today is the last day of our Sentiers Du Moulin Trip. We're riding Slab city which is on of the most iconic trail here and it's apparently the one of the longest slab trails in North America. We followed that up with a lap down Granitosaur, which is one of SDM's more technical Trails.
Sentiers du Moulin is located just outside Quebec city. The Builders of the SDM bike Park have been developing some of the most impressive enduro and downhill mountain bike trails in North America. This place flies way under the radar outside of the area, but we'll be hearing more about it in the years to come.

That slow tech trail look gnarly already on camera. I can't imagine how "bad" it must have looked in real life. It looked like an awesome bit of trail.... which I by no way have the skills to ride.
Slab city IS super long, but i always figured the ribbon in grand junction was longer? I guess it depends how you measure it 🤷♂️

Yeah i agre with you (though I haven't ridden the ribbon)! Calling it the longest is a bit of a stretch, but can't say I've ridden any that are longer? Maybe something in north conway could rival it. Either way the whole trail was very cool nonetheless.
He will have to visit the ribbon and compare now. :)
2:20 it's crazy how easy it looks on GoPro compared to real life. SDM is a gem, one of my favorite (and furthest) places to ride!!

Made me feel better to see you had to pull for the jumps on Gold City haha. It's not just me!
Those jumps were really tough. Maybe on my sensor I'd have more speed, but i just felt like i had to use a lot more yank than I'd like.
The thing is , Gold City is made of all doubles and you really need to be on the edge to be able to clean it , and if you case one , you’re screwed for the next 4-5 jumps. Very few people can actually do it, and for 99% of the others, we cannot build our way trough it because it’s all double instead of tables…
It’s also a very weird place to put a jump trail so difficult, should be on S1 . Would have been nice to have something a little more accessible to complete the descent of slab city all the way to the buttom

Love this place, discovered it back 2015 on a DH trip to Mont Saint Anne that got rained out, so we decided to explore and found this and Vallée Bras-du-Nord. Did you also get a chance to go up to Vallée Bras-du-Nord, Accueil Shannahan? Some awesome stuff up there too.
I love how Phil just sends it blind on every new trail he rides. 😂
I only do that when I have a good sense as to where the trail is going otherwise, I am pretty cautious when I’m riding unfamiliar terrain. This is especially true when riding out BC.

In Quebec we have a tendancy to call everything a Proline, probably somewhat due to veeeery finicky insurance reasons. That said not too far away you have MSA which has waaay gnarlier stuff, "surprise" drops, gaps and what not with no warning signs and apparently its fine 😅 (I'll say it again, you gotta go ride the DH sector there at some point !)
And dont worry about Gold City, a lot of people have the same opinion about it, havent ridden it yet but I trust their judgement, and now hearing yours further cements it. It's definitely a trail the builders built for themselves !
It's always tough building trails like that. You never know how much speed you are going to carry until the dirt dries out which can take weeks or sometimes a month. The idea of the trail is good and there's a lot to love but I think the eye may have been bigger than their appetite!
I'm probably going to hit up Bromont the next tome I'm in the area. Ive raced a quebec cup on the WC track and it was sick, but i haven't been back since and that was in 2011
@@SkillsWithPhil Bromont is on my list too, probably soon when I take a week off. I hear there's some nice stuff there, but the best is "off the map" 👀
From what I'm told, its easier and flowier than MSA overall, bit faster and more jumps. The latter has more slow tech, more gnar and more challenging line choices.

Wow what a cool place !!!! Well i have learned one thing for sure this week . The elevator drop on Drummer hill verses Hardtail ...Elevator drop 1000 hardtail broken lol. I lived though stuffed the front suspension its stuck and a bit bent . Front and rear rims well are kinda a little umm tweaked. See what the trade in value is at ALPINE in Keene . I just bought it a month ago . I'm gonna need a little tougher one than this lol. Think if i put the reflectors back on it i can get a better trade lol. The looks on there face will be epic !!!!
Hey Phil you should try the trail à Quebec City in the empire47 center or e47 in short it is at lac delage it is 30 minute away from sentier du moulin. There is mont saint Anne and massif de la petite rivière saint Francois. There is some trail at montchatel. And btw the rock at Quebec are REALLY grippy especially at sentier du moulin the are kind of more grippy wet.
euh... please don't go to Le Massif Phil... complete waste of your time. Spend 2 days at MSA instead and 1 other at Empire47 (forget about the small stuff, go for Descente du coude and Nosferatu, so much fun czcams.com/video/P-AYVbJk4Oc/video.html)

I like the way Hailey was mimicking you at the end of the video. I don’t think she even knew she was doing it.
That was a great mix of trails and some impressive riding. That "Granitizer" or whatever it was called, with the long wooden bridge climb (imagine that climb on the ground, would take 2x or more energy!) -- that was pure early 00s natural tech, which is very hard to find these days.
Some of those rock-to-rock gaps you made on a few of the steep chutes are things that you see naturally, but I wouldn't see. But after watching you do it, I think, "well, that was a possible line to ride!"
Last time I watched one of your videos, you were riding with Wyn Masters. Your bike was creaking in that video too. Show it some love, man! But seriously, thanks for this video and the impressive riding.
I don't think people realize how often i take apart my bike and maintain it. Im constantly cleaning it, changing bearings, regreasing my bikes, but the fact of the matter is that if you ride a bike hard, multiple days in a row, it's going to creek. If you go back to the first day of this trip my bike was silent. This was the last day of a trip where i rode the bike hard the previous days. It doesn't help that the first day was muddy, and the other days were humid.
@@SkillsWithPhil I was sorta kidding. At my level of riding, my weight, my age I'm not stressing my bikes much. You ride aggressively and I'm sure put your bike through way more than the average rider. Most modern MTBs, as good as they are these days, are still designed mostly for average riders riding average speeds on average lines. Bigger more powerful riders, faster riders -- they stress bikes way more.
I went back & watched the video of you climbing the Slab City or whatever it was called. The kinds of lunges & hops required on that kind of climb is a good example of what I mean -- what you'd put your bike through, vs what Mr Average would. Mr Average would be walking that climb where you're doing power lunges, hops, and if given enough room, gaps.

On that side of SDM, even in pure wet conditions, those rocks will not break traction. It's insane. However, if you crash for ANY other reason, those slabs are like a giant cheese grater.

Slip angle is the relation of your friction versus momentum. If you start to turn, you increase the slip angle, which will tend to spin you out of control. If you brake and turn. it causes similar failures. It's why you brake into a turn and accelerate out of the turn. In either case, the goal is to be going straight asap and turn whilst only turning. This is true for all vehicles... hint hint car people who never drive their vehicles in extreme learning circumstances... this is why driving at a track and learning what 'going out of control' is like in controlled circumstances is soooo GREAT!!! learn to loose control, and you learn a lot about maintaining control on the line before falling over the cliff of LOST control.

1:50 You say it was a lot easier in that direction as you stop your front tire on an arrow carved into the wood pointing you in the direction you were going. It's amazing how easy it is to miss stuff as you are going along that can stand out to someone watching.
I know right!? Its amazing how many things i catch while editing video that i didn't pick up on in the moment. It's like being able to relive the day but frame by frame. But yeah, that arrow blended in. All i saw was ladder, which means trail, and then my eyes jumped to the trail behind it. That's where having redundant and predictable signage helps like You'll find on highways. That being said, there's so little traffic on that trail the arrow seems like more of a suggestion. Riding backwards up slab city on the other hand would be bit more problematic.

Kidding. 😉 Speaking of missing stuff, I recently improved enough in fitness / pace to start riding out front with my riding buddies and I realized how bad I was at paying attention to where we are going as I constantly was taking the wrong turns on our local trails once I was in the lead.

There’s not much you can do about that. Nothing trail related ever translates onto camera.
