  • Really fun build... When I first saw this can I took the specs and thought man I could stuff 3 or 4 batteries in it.. Lots of room, cool fun battery box for camping.. This build was around $200 and hours of enjoyment in designing as I went along...Charges 6 USB, 3 12V Cigarette Lighter, Battery Meter, Head Lights, Top Mounted Flasher, 12V Terminal Posts, Internal Fuse Block. Solar Capable.

    I made a couple of those. Mine are a little different. I included anderson power connectors for radio equipment and I connected my voltmeter to a master switch . Nothing has power unless the master switch is turned on. You did nice work, very neat and clean.

      Thank you! I just wanted it to look cool, not utilitarian. Andersons are great! They're reusable too I've found, out of necessity, poping out the leads and desoldering and away you go to ready for reuse. It's good fun building stuff like this.

    Love your videos! Great builds! Found them while looking for more ideas after I built a simple version, with a twist.
    Have all these Li Ion tool batteries layin around, so I figured why not utilize them?!
    Now I can just pop a Ridgid battery in there and charge up my devices!

      Thank you... I never thought there would be such interest in these... BTW, the batteries in this box are sitting on 1/8" hobby plywood form fitted to the bottom of the box for added support if you're thinking of building something like it customized to your requirements.

    Yes ! I love the creativity i just went for one big battery which left more room for switch panels on the side i was able to leave the lid unmolested for the purpose of rain. It was my first time and worked out by luck haha

      My approach is slightly different. I buy stuff that I think is cool and relatively inexpensive... There is a gestation period where I just don't do anything with it... Then bam... The idea comes together. It's like once you get that first opening sentence, the paragraph writes itself.

      Hey Danny, thank you for your comment.... I built these over time and bought parts over time to spread out the expense... Not that there was any particular use in mind, but rather just to relax and make something out of nothing.

    • @thisoldmanchannel
      @thisoldmanchannel  Před 3 lety

      Thank you! Wiring is easy as you'll see on the DIY build videos when I put a fuse block in there.... It's one circuit at a time one on off switch... What I did on the Zombie box was consolidate most of the black ground wires.. Looks more complicated than it is because it's in a compact space.. Anyone can do this.

  • @ometofu

    I built my zombie box with dewalt tstak case and dewalt batteries. I just don’t like dedicated battery which u end up not using for years. I know dewalt battery is not life04. But hey lighter weight and easier to charge with my existing field setup…

    • @thisoldmanchannel
      @thisoldmanchannel  Před rokem +1

      I put them in because of older vintage electronics like hand held CB radios. Since my days of building radio controlled cars and boats I became a huge fan of of Anderson Powerpole Connectors... They're great for quick easy connections and a favorite of amateur radio enthusiasts. Also look at the SAE connectors... A CZcams commenter suggested it and I Installed one on my MTM Mini Ammo Can Battery Box. Go lithium, they're lighter and can provide a longer run time than gel cells.

    As far as I can see you have auxiliary plugs thin copper brass or steel body with a plastic disc to hold the positive conector a cigarette lighter plug has a solid steel barrel and a ceramic disc designed for the higher heat of a cigarette lighter al

    • @thisoldmanchannel
      @thisoldmanchannel  Před 2 lety

      Understood, the term cigarette lighter plug is somewhat ubiquitous for this style of connector. An actual lighter plug is an entirety different construct as you pointed out.. You are very astute observer Sir.... Thank you for commenting. Thank you for watching.

    Hey Old Man, (catchy channel name - like it), fellow old man here, LOL. Was wondering, I have just discovered the world of these power boxes, etc. Was wondering, do you ever add a list of items used in your video descriptions? Would be a nice addition. Just a thought. You sure do take the time to dress things up. Pretty cool stuff. Thanks for the cool vidz.

    • @thisoldmanchannel
      @thisoldmanchannel  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey, there, thank you for commenting! I made quite a few of these boxes long before making CZcams videos. Since there was such interest, I made very lengthy DIY videos and took the time to explain everything and what I was using...
      You're not the first to ask for a parts list... Maybe I'll include one in future videos, but there's one thing in the back of my mind... If I make a 14 minute step by step video and the average view time is 3 minutes, the audience is already missing most of it anyway.

      Thank you for your comments.. ... The box, batteries, wiring, angle connectors, etc., were all purchased on eBay. This build cost around $200 approx. I suppose the batteries can be upgraded to lithium ion at some point, but gel cell is still pretty cheap and this thing is great for picnics and other weekend outings as is... Surprisingly handy item and conversation piece.

  • @msimcox2
    @msimcox2 Před 2 lety

    if you switched out those batteries for 3 12 7ah LiFePO4 batteries, they would be cheaper, and all three would weigh what one of the lead acid ones weigh, you would only lose 6ah, but I think that the weight savings would more than make up for the los of ah, and if its really an issue, you MIGHT be able to shoehorn in a 4th battery

    • @thisoldmanchannel
      @thisoldmanchannel  Před 2 lety

      Absolutely! Once you build and wire the box, swapping out batteries is a breeze... I'll be adding a Dakota Lithium Ion battery to the orange bus and do a step by step wiring video with a 4 gang fuse block... Great comment! Thank you for watching!

    I wish I could get some wiring diagram like your build😇

    • @thisoldmanchannel
      @thisoldmanchannel  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi there! Don't use wiring diagram, but you'll just need one for the on off switches that you choose to use. I typically wire the negative first from component to component in a specific circuit and then to the negative block. Positive is wired similarly to the switch and then to the fuse block with a dedicated fuse. DC is pretty simple and there are no relay switches. Very straight forward working with Direct Current.

    • @thisoldmanchannel
      @thisoldmanchannel  Před 2 lety

      Yeah, NOOB, the whole idea is to inspire people. Love to see what others are doing. Just gotta be careful and use the right guage wire for the lengths you're running based on the amps you're drawing. One big reason why to use the thickest wire you can, best wire which is silcone jackated wire -60C to 200C, and low amp fuses to keep things safe. Also, make sure those batteries in that box can't move or flop around at all.

    • @thisoldmanchannel
      @thisoldmanchannel  Před rokem +1

      Hmmm... Completed in 2017 or 2018, probably around $130 to $150 tops. Actually I spent a little more as I was designing and building over time so I didn't end up using everything I bought for my second green ammo box which is what you're looking at... The building tips videos cover my very first build and the evolution from there. Thanks for watching and commenting!
