    FAQ
    Q) Why are there comments from a week ago when this video has just gone live today?
    A) Patrons usually have early access to videos. I'll show the first version of a video on Patreon and often the feedback I get results in a video going through further revisions to improve it. e.g. Fix audio issues, clarify points, add extra footage or cut extraneous things out. The video that goes live on youtube is the final version.
    FAQ
    Q) You’re doing the Vinyl Zoetrope wrong
    A) Nope - Here’s the technical info kindly provided in a comment by groenendiek
Counting the images there's 38 sectors with images on the record, resulting in 20.9 images/second at 33 rpm and 28.5 at 45 rpm. There's no camera shooting mode which uses 20.9 frames per second, so indeed it will never work as advertised. But, when you play at 45 rpm and record video at 30 fps then you'll see the animations, but moving counterclockwise at 2,25 rpm.

Re: SID Chip @ 3:00 onwards. Interestingly I have just released an adapter to allow an 8580 to work in circuits/computers designed for the 6581 (I've been making interfaces to use the SID sound chip on Z80 based systems since 2003). It takes care of the different voltages, filters etc, so this would allow the SX-64 to use a 8580 and play the music as sonically intended. I won't spam this post with links, however the latest video on my own channel shows it in action and has further information and points you to my website.

      @@omahahnful You'd need 54 images on the record (33-1/3 rpm / 60 sec/min = 0.555~ rps, 30 fps / 0.555~ rps = 54 frames/revolution) to get to 30 fps. 25 fps would need 45 images. (Edit: Corrected math)

    • @groenendiek
      @groenendiek Před 3 lety +20

@@omahahnful At 33 1/3 rpm (NOT 33 to be exact), in one second there’s 33,33/60=0,56 rotation. So if you want to view 30 images in that one second, they’ll have to be in that 0,56 rotation. We’ll have to divide 30 by this number, finding 54 which is the number of images you need, to produce a still image on a LP at 33 1/3 rpm. The frame rate of the average smartphone video recording is 30, though the cheapest ones often use variable frame rate recording. And I can’t tell what frame rate you see on screen without recording, so I can’t say for sure that using a phone camera as a strobe effect to view these records will work without actually recording the video. Also, with needing 54 sectors to able to view a still image through a camera, the sectors containing the visuals are becoming quite narrow (360/54=6.7 degrees) - which may well be the reason that they've chosen a compromise allowing for a larger canvas.

But most importantly they have the "Deluxe Omni-Album" so you don't need to buy all their albums on vinyl you can just buy an "all-purpose album cover containing liner notes, artworks and song listings that are suitable for all six TISM album releases." It has 100 minutes of analogue silence across 2 clear vinyl discs so you can listen to the digital versions of their albums in peace.

Nice! As a studio engineer, the DAT would be the only format I really can relate to, but I never even saw any commercial releases. For us DAT was a “pro” format for delivering stereo mixes for mastering or soundtrack, between say ‘91 and ‘00. I say “pro”, because our well tuned 1/4“ analog Studer A-80 sounded way better than our £6k Sony PCM-7030 (1992). The Sony was a real beast, a fantastic machine to use. A simple clean took two minutes, while keeping the Studer in top shape took hours each week. No wonder I took the easy way out back then. Today no one requests those “CD- quality” (same effective data format) master originals. Sheer luck if we can dig out the analog tape copy instead.
Well, that’s an early digital audio history lesson. In 2020 it seems few care about the integrity of their music’s source data files, session copies are sooo boring... 😅👍

Quite the quirky little collection of media outlets used to play music and have a niche market to do it with. I’m sure a lot of people would be following the links to look for the next (little) big thing

Ah, William Allen White. That's the face that is shown during They Might Be Giant music videos and concerts. Editor and Publisher of the Emporia (Kansas) Gazette from the 1890's until the 1940's. I love They Might Be Giants and have all their albums and have been to a few of their concerts.

I rally like the style and type of this video, and indeed the less common media types and new music that gets released. I would really like to see more of these kind of videos next to the normal lineup. (I guess making a comment says more than simply hitting the like button)

Glad I found this, immediately had to buy two copies of Flood, one for me and one as a surprise for my best friend. Flood was one of the most influential albums of our young lives, and I'm super excited about it. Gotta dust off the turntable and maybe set up a strobe.

You could do a collab video on the marantz pmd740. The other person shows what all the knobs are used for, etc., and you tear the thing down showing the tech and giving your traditional bit of history on the brand and product. Love your work, man, thanks for the videos (always great content with proper research done well).

So, back in the day there was a brick and mortar store near where I lived that specialized in CD and DAT. Lynn's Disc & DAT, as I recall. It was too expensive for a teenager, but I did go in a few times, they probably sold every DAT release that ever existed. Long defunct of course.

Not sure if this is something you'd be interested in, but Tristan Perich has a few albums on a chip: 1-bit music, 1-bit symphony, and noise patterns. Even if the music isn't of interest to you, the tech is pretty cool. In any event, great video, as always!
