Enneagram Type Six in Film and Television

  • Taking a deeper look at the Enneagram Type Six by showing examples from film and television.
    From the Enneagram Institute: "The committed, security-oriented type. Sixes are reliable, hard-working, responsible, and trustworthy. Excellent "troubleshooters," they foresee problems and foster cooperation, but can also become defensive, evasive, and anxious-running on stress while complaining about it. They can be cautious and indecisive, but also reactive, defiant and rebellious. They typically have problems with self-doubt and suspicion. At their Best: internally stable and self-reliant, courageously championing themselves and others."
    Note: This video is not a statement that every character shown is 100% a Type Six. Most are fictional creations and might have characteristics of multiple Enneagram types that a real person would never have. Rather, it's a montage of characters acting in a specific way in a specific scene that demonstrates some attributes of an Enneagram Type Six.

      @joe-mama6451 The test on the Enneagram Institute website is the best for my money. However, all “tests“ should be taken with a grain of salt. They are really more just a way to get you pointed in a general direction. What I’d recommend doing is reading the full type descriptions on the Enneagram Institute website and see what hits you. For most people, one type, maybe two, will jump out and punch you in the face. Then you can dig deeper from there.

    Fun! One of my favorite 6w7s on television is Stiles from Teen Wolf. He hilariously captures how manic, anxious, and hilarious that combo can be. I'd say my favorite 6w5 is Benjamin Martin from The Patriot. As a 6 myself, it's easy for me to recognize them in fiction. They're all careful, as I would be.

      I've got Sam in the Type 2 video, which is what he's generally Typed as. However, as I've been working on this series I've tried to recognize that because many of these characters are fictional (read: made up), it's entirely possible for them to have characteristics of several Types that a real person might not have. So it's entirely possible the Sam has some good Six traits as well as Two.

    wonderful video! the scene of diana especially brought me to tears, because that's exactly the kind of good i want to be. which brings me to my inner conflict- am i a type one or type six?
    i'm confused because both the authority figures in my life and the family that i desperately seek are religious figures. and my means of "winning" their approval and love is by being the morally best person i possibly can be, and i'm mistrusting of literally everyone else in my life because i'm hypeaware of their fallibility and inevitable betrayal.
    but i know i still seek approval and validation from the people in almost everything i do, whether it's an interest or a good deed. ironically, the religious figured are still my moral compass, and so regularly my anxiety gets a bit too loud and tells me, "what if they're upset with you because of what you did? what if God hates you?" and i spiral into utter anguish for the few days it takes to come back to my senses.
    when i first read the descriptions for type one, it immediately clicked into place, but now i'm not sure.

    • @TypeCast
      @TypeCast  Před 2 lety

      I can definitely relate to seeking the approval of religious authority figures (I grew up in American Evangelical Christianity). However, I'm sure you're aware that those figures are just as likely, if not *more* so, to be fallible and inevitably betray you. The higher we place people on pedestals, the harder they will "fall from grace."
      Is the approval/validation that you seek more about Security ("If they approve of me then my place within the system is secure; I can trust that I'll be taken care of."), or is it more about having your own personal Righteousness affirmed ("If they approve of me then it means I really am a good person, I'm on the right path, and my morality is validated.")?
      I'm a Type One and... the struggle is real! Ones and Sixes very often have overlapping traits. But Ones are ultimately more concerned about being Right and Good. Sixes are ultimately more concerned about Security and their place within the group/system/hierarchy.
      Check out the "Misidentifying Ones and Sixes" page on the Enneagram Institute site. It might help bring you some clarity.

    This video made me realize I completely understand Malcolm X. Don't agree with him, but I acknowledge his motives. It's very hard to trust someone, especially a leader, that has done us harm in the past, regardless of them telling us and trying to prove us they changed. A type 6 could easily go as far as provoking that figure they're suspicious about, just to get a reaction that confirms their suspicion. There's a desperate need for safety and acceptance, both for themselves and for the people around them.

    I do seek affection, but I actually avoid being the center of attention. I want my achievements to be noticed and praised on their own, but I feel uncomfortable showing those achievements to others. I seek to be loved, but I don’t want to stand out.
    I do struggle with the fear of losing acceptance in the eyes of others like Type 3’s do, but I am also afraid of panicking and losing control like Type 6’s do.
    Am I a subtype of Type 3 or something, or am I more of a Type 6?

      Enneagram “tests” are a good way to get you pointed in the right direction and narrow things down, but you should not rely on just those results. I recommend that you read through the full Type description for Three and Six and see if one or the other really jumps out at you.
      www.enneagraminstitute.com/type-3
      www.enneagraminstitute.com/type-6
      Another way to identify your Type would be to narrow it down to the lowest common denominator. If it came down to it and you could only pick one, which of these would you pick…
      1. You have high esteem in the eyes of others, “success“ in whatever ways that is important to you, and you are also seen as successful by others. But you don’t have much life security. There’s instability in your life. You have a hard time finding your place within the organization, the group, etc…
      2. Your life is secure. You know your place, and you are both trusted by others and you have trust in others. You have stability. But you are not viewed as successful or held in high esteem by others. You are “average”, not standing out in any particular way.
      Does one of those scenarios stand out to you more than the other?

    These videos are great but I feel that the text from references added help and hurt the initial presentation of watching this as I think I should pause to read then re-engage in the scene that's already started which dilutes the teaching of the scene with the text placed there.
    It's quite jarring actually, maybe it would make more sense to place the text so we can pause and read then move to the scene with the text there as a slight reference and it not interfere then the scene ends and the next text block appears and cue the next scene.
    Of course what works against me personally is I haven't watched most of these films so I'm seeing them for the first time so I have to keep that in mind.
    It is still great work despite my long critique!

    • @TypeCast
      @TypeCast  Před rokem +2

      Yeah it's not necessarily ideal. I've experimented with different formats and this seems to work the best overall. One problem with having the quotes before the scene is it nearly doubles the length of the videos, which are already long to begin with. Most people just aren't going to sit through a 45-minute video that's half just text they have to read. The other issue is that some of the quotes match specifically with certain parts of the clips. So if a scene has two different quotes over it, the second quote might be something that is specifically referencing a behavior that's happening at that point. If the quote was placed before the scene that connection could be lost or missed. So my best advice... watch them multiple times and run up my view counts!

    Is there anything positive about the 6? This was all very negative….

    • @TypeCast
      @TypeCast  Před 2 lety +17

      Each of the videos in the series has a spectrum of healthy to unhealthy examples. For the Six, I think the clips of Ben Wyatt (Parks and Rec), Malcolm X, Natasha Romanoff (Avengers), Woody's 2nd clip (Toy Story), and Princess Diana all demonstrate healthy traits. Then there's some that have "neutral" traits (could be positive or negative depending on how the traits are expressed), like The Good Shepherd, Larry David, and Cast Away.
      I've already got a running list going for "Round 2" of this series, so if you've got any healthy Six examples in mind that you'd like to see... I'm all ears!

      @@TypeCast Thank you for your response... Maybe you can help me understand this... I fall almost exactly between a 7 and a 6. Neither really feels right. Do you have any characters in mind or any traits or anywhere I can look into to understand this better? I feel like i oscillate between the two, but they are so different...??

    • @TypeCast
      @TypeCast  Před 2 lety +3

      @@kathrynwittmeier3035 For starters, keep in mind that not everyone has an explicitly "dominant" primary Type. For myself, I'm 110% a One, absolutely no question about it. I'm the One-est One you'll ever meet. But someone I know is almost perfectly split between a Two and a Three... very strong characteristics of both. So you don't necessarily have to "pick" a single Type. Your spectrum might be broader than that.
      Have you watched the Seven video yet? Do you feel split between the characters in both videos, or does one resonate more than the other?
      The next thing I'd recommend (if you haven't already) is to read through the Six/Seven Type Descriptions on the RHETI website...
      www.enneagraminstitute.com/type-descriptions
      Reading those might help something "jump out" at you.

      @TypeCast  Před 2 lety +5

      Hmm… I think whatever “hate/competition” he’s displaying is more about his insecurities and fears than some desire to be special or unique (as a Four would). In fact he deliberately downplays his unique abilities, wanting to work construction with Chucky for the rest of his life instead of using his math genius to stand out.
      That’s what makes the Enneagram so powerful. It looks beyond the surface traits to examine *why* someone is behaving a certain way. You could have several people all acting the exact same way on the surface, but they’re all doing it for very different reasons.

      I can't really tell if she's a 6 or a 9. She usually acts more of a teenager but she can be real paranoid over what seems to me like something small and even though she acts like a teenager, she really cares about her authority and respect. She has a habit of bottling up her emotions so occasionally she'll just out of nowhere explode over something small. She can be pretty unpredictable though usually she does try to be nice.

      6 and 9 are connected, so either could make sense. I would check out the Type descriptions for each on the Enneagram Institute website and see if one clicks more than the other.

      No, pretty sure he’s a counter-phobic Six. Although for the purposes of this series it doesn’t really matter what his actual Type is. The clips are more to give a general overview of each Type. Angela Kinsey is a One though, and I’ve got her in the One video. Check it out!

      With this series I’ve learned that many characters act as a Rorschach test… people see what they “want” to see, myself included. Plus with fictional characters they might have traits in combinations that a real person would never have.
      Having said that… Dwight is no One. His main drive/focus is not being perfect/right/good. He sees threats everywhere. He’s totally loyal to Michael (except for the Crentist incident). He’s the office “guardian”. He’s an almost perfect Counter-phobic 6w5… but that’s just what I see.
