    Sighthounds are the fastest dogs in the world and the famous Greyhound is part of this group. Because they need to be fast, they have lean bodies, flexible back and long legs.
    Sighthounds are very old and ancient group of dogs. For example Saluki or Sloughi are very old breeds.
    I mention some questionable breeds into the video. Rhodesian Ridgeback, Thai Ridgeback and Basenji are sighthounds based on some major kennel clubs while some other kennel clubs put them into different group. But since there is always at least one major kennel club (FCI or AKC) that mark them as sighthounds i decide to include all three into this video.

    The sight hounds are so different from other dogs, particularly the ever snuffling Beagles. I never realized how the height of the dog ties into its ability to hunt by sight. They appear to be gentle animals and love to see them run. Thank you for the vid, fun to see them all.

    Loved the vid and learned something new! As someone owned by two whippets I was looking forward to the fine example that would be used to demonstrate the breed... um... an utterly gorgeous heart melting puppy was awesome, but they only look like that for such short time! And who can resist a whippet puppy??? A more grown up example would have been in keeping with the rest of the video.
    For the record, Saluki's, Afghans and Silken Windhounds are utterly gorgeous.

    Rhodesian Ridgeback, Basenji, Thai Ridgeback. For some kennel clubs they are sighthounds but some other kennel clubs put them into different category. I put them into this video, because always, at least one major kennel club (AKC or FCI) have them in Sighthound group. What do you think? Are these dogs really sighthounds or not?

    • @Rocadog
      @Rocadog  Před 5 lety +3

      @@gilregev4823 i have the same opinion as you do. I put them into the list, because AKC or FCI (not sure which one now) have Ridgebacks in sighthound category.. And i found that it is based on a fact, that some of the foundation stock used by Cornelius Van Rooyen during the creation of the breed was sighthound stock. Support for this theory has grown in areas (most notably in the United States) where ridgebacks have been allowed to compete with sighthounds in lure-coursing field trials. The theory's detractors contend that success in lure coursing trials does not in and of itself make a dog a true sighthound, and further bolster their contention by pointing out that ridgebacks are very poor performers when allowed to run in unofficial open field courses where they typically cannot keep up with the true sighthounds. Even so, no one can argue that ridgebacks have not been successful at lure coursing events. In fact ridgebacks have been very competitive in almost every lure coursing venue in which they have been allowed to compete. Proponents of this theory will often further defend it with a (debated) claim that while ridgebacks are versatile and use all their senses, their first and strongest inclination is to find game by sight-which itself is considered normal for dogs of any type, when the game is actually in sight

      They are one of the breeds that might or might not be included in the video. They are definitely different from the typical sighthounds, but for example the UKC (United Kennel Club) classify them as Sighthounds. But to this day people argue if they should be sighthounds, scenthounds, cur dogs, wagon hounds or even primite dogs.

      @Rocadog  Před 4 lety +4

      The English and Polish Greyhounds are probably not related, but we can not say that for sure, since the origin of the POlish Greyhound is little bit a mystery. There was a time, when it we believed, that Polish Greyhounds were developed from the Greyhound (English). But they look more like greyhounds from Asia and today, scientists believe, that Polish Greyhound is totally separate breed from English Greyhounds. I will maybe make a video comparsion between the English grey and Polish greyhound in the future :)
