How Does Accutane Work?

  • Hi, I’m Dr. Chad Hartmann, a board-certified dermatologist with U.S. Dermatology Partners, and today I want to talk to you about Accutane.
Accutane is a medicine that's taken by mouth to treat acne. It's not only very effective at treating acne but it's the only medication that can induce a long-term remission or cure of the acne. Accutane is taken for a period of approximately five to seven months what we call a course of acne. After a course of acne, most people have their acne completely cleared. Even more impressive is that two out of three of those individuals won't have their acne come back. In the one-third of individuals where the acne does return. Normally, it's not as severe as it was prior to the Accutane, and we will normally put those individuals on a second course of Accutane because then only one out of three of those individuals will have their acne return.
Accutane works by several mechanisms, of the mechanisms we currently understand probably the most important are two. One, it exfoliates the skin to help unplug the pores getting rid of those blackheads, and two it helps to reduce oil production, and oil production is important because that's what certain bacteria that cause the inflammation with acne feed on and allows them to grow.
Many people ask me how long it takes to see improvement with Accutane, and although that can vary from person to person, typically within one to three months we can see significant improvement in individuals on Accutane. After six months almost all patients have had their acne clear.
If you are suffering from acne and have further questions about Accutane, please contact one of our U.S. Dermatology Partners locations so that we can help you.

I took accutane 12 years ago with severe acne, was on it for 13 months. Now I get a maybe 1 pimple a month! Side effects are rough though, dry flaking skin and depression, but life after has been amazing!

It does much more than reduce oil production. It actually converts the bacteria on the skin to other types of bacteria that aren’t as irritating to the persons skin

I'll be soon finishing my second month. I gradually increased my dosage (from 10mg to 30mg)
Right now my skin is WAY better. I purged the first month, but now it looks good.
My face is not totally clear yet (I have a few inflamed scars and one active pimple). But compared to before it's so much better , and I still have a few months of treatment to go through.
As for the side effects, I'm good. My lips are dry but that's it

Went on isotretinoin (accutane) for about 6 months and it did nothing… then went on a second dose and stopped after like a month bc I couldn’t be bothered and kept forgetting which is my own fault but now (2-3 years later) I’ve started up again. Been on it for a month with no improvement however over the course of 12 months I’m on it hopefully it fixes me completely

If your acne is severe, you can take it for a year. My dermatologist told me I might be on mine for a year since my acne is kinda body-wide 😮‍💨 but she says the longer I'm on it and the more I take, the better it will work lmao then she said "if only all medications would work that way" XD

All these dermatologists are trained to adhere strictly to insurance guidelines, otherwise they can't practice with their diplomas! They wait until these young people have serious scars to treat them appropriately. This is outrageous and must be stopped!

All Diseases have remained consistent throughout time, and the best doctors study medical history, listen to their patients, and provide effective treatments. Unfortunately, some doctors prioritize pharmaceutical companies' interests, using patients as test subjects instead. Patients should be aware and critically evaluate their doctors. Poor people don’t have choice because they are slaved to government healthcare that tax the hell out of people and give back healthcare that worth shit. YOU DEICIDE!
