Blue baby bottle SL review: one of the best Blue microphones

  • Alright, so this is one of my favorite microphones I own. The Blue baby bottle SL is an XLR microphone that has a full capsule on it, and it just sounds awesome. The microphone can get a little bit sibilant at times but that is nothing that can't be worked with in editing.
For people that want to do any sort of narration or audio books/voiceover they will really like the proximity effect on this thing because it has a great one. For those that don't like the proximity effect the 100 Hertz high pass filter works wonders to keep the low frequencies out, especially if you're going to be using this for singing.
This microphone has more of a vintage sound to it which I really love. This is more of a stylized microphone, so it does have its own unique sound. If you're looking for a microphone with a flat frequency response to really learn how to edit sound, I would probably go with something more like a RODE NT1 or Se Electronics 2200 because this has a little bit of added flare which I really like in microphones when it's done right like Blue did with this one.
When I hear this microphone on my guitar, I think it sounds great especially when you use the high pass filter to get out some of those lower frequencies and turn on the 20dB pad because this is a hot microphone and you do not want to overdrive the capsule. I think this microphone would be great if you're going to be using it for acoustic guitar or any sort of acoustic instrument because as a very bright natural vintage sound.
I have listed specific specs below.
    • Blue's Class-A discrete circuitry delivers ultralow self-noise of only 10.8 dB
    • 100 Hz low-cut filter increases clarity and reduces rumble from your room
    • -20 dB pad keeps your audio free of distortion
    • Operates on 48V phantom power
    • Hand-tuned, gold-sputtered, large-diaphragm cardioid capsule
I hope this video helped. If you have any questions feel free to leave a comment and I'll be happy to answer.

Great review. I really appreciate it. I already have one that I want to start using for voice over work and it is definitely a hot mic that seems to pick up every little noise. Can you tell me if it is best to have the High Pass Filter on or off for voice over work and which position of the switch is on or off. Great musical skills too. Love the guitar playing. Thank you :)

Very hot mic. You definitely need some treatment in your recording space because of that output and the full capsule this microphone has. To answer your first question... it depends. If you like your voice to sound lower and more bloomy when you talk closer to the mic then keep the high pass filter off. This effect of making your voice more lower and deep sounding when you get close to the mic is called a proximity effect. If you want your voice to sound more natural sounding when you get up close to mic keep the high pass filter on. To answer your second question the high pass filter is off when the switch is to the right and switch to the left turns it on. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Excellent review, thanks! I see it on sale on Amazon for $163 so I'm going to pick it up, especially since it might be discontinued. The video was a pleasure to watch, a great change of pace from the typical tech review vids on CZcams. Please continue to make them. Based on my bit of experience I think that improving your thumbnails could make a difference. You have a really cool studio setup and you are plenty photogenic so if you have everything in focus, not just the product, I think it'll help. You got some traction with this vid so learn from it and iterate. You also sound like a very good musician so let that shine too. Subscribed and looking forward to more.

Wonderful. Same sentiment, I just picked one up as well. $163 was too good of a price to pass up!

I stumbled across the Baby bottle on Amazon for $163 with 59% off. I immediately looked at reviews and I was sold. I joined the club and also picked one up too 😂

Yeah it is a smoking deal. It is a very good mic for $163.00. I don't think you would be able to get a high of quality full capsule condenser studio microphone for any cheaper.

does your microphone have a bottom cap that unscrews? i've tried two of these microphones and one unscrewed at the bottom while the other did not, both sl models

Yes, mine does have a cap that screws off. I can't speak to the older model baby blue bottle or the bluebird, but I do know that all the baby blue bottle SL's have an unscrewed cap. The reason for this is because it is supposed to be a professional studio microphone and it makes it easier for repairs as well as to be able to alter the microphone like switching out the capsule. Hope that helps.
