- The iKamper X-Cover 2.0 is one of the most underrated tents on the market today. It combines both tons of space and also a slimmer profile. Somewhere in between a softshell and hardshell tent with the ability to mount skis, bikes, and kayaks with ease. This is a patented design that no one else has or will have in the future.

What’s your favorite tent you’ve ever owned?
For floor tents, anything with two huge doors. For rooftop, just got my first one ever. I bought the new FSR Aspen lite. Hopefully it's a great experience and the beginning to more overlanding trips.
@@FernandoLopez48 I need to try out some new ground tents this year. I want to try something large inside. How do you like the FSR? You said you just got it but have you gotten to test it out?
@@OXFOOT It's a pre-order item. It's supposed to start shipping or production in May 🤷.
@@FernandoLopez48 hmm. Well let me know how you like it. I love this X-Cover but I like hearing feedback about others just in case people ask me about them.
@@OXFOOT Sure! I'm just hoping that it's big enough for me, my wife, and my two toddlers.
Love your setup. Thanks for the videos.
Putting carpet tiles in there only elevates the experience even more! It so much nicer crawling around up there while getting the bedding situated.
I had carpet tiles in my last ikamper and loved it. I haven’t gotten around to it in this tent.
Love this tent, so much room for you, me, and 🐶. ❤
Plenty of room for his kennel and far enough way that we don’t smell him at night when he’s got an upset tummy from eating stuff he found around the camp site.
@@OXFOOT lol very specific, but yes. 💩
Very nice. The 3.0 starts at 5K and is a beaut. Thanks for showing this model.
Yeah I really love the all black on this one. It’s obviously not as low profile as the skycamp but I really love the thing!
Thanks for thorough review. I ordered one.
Hell yeah! It’s a great tent!
yes after looking over their skycamp 3.0 and the xcover 2.0, the xcover 2.0 seems a tad bigger inside. I'm just waiting for iKamper to ship my xcover now lol. Definitely a overlooked tent and I got it when it was on sale.
Yeah it looks like the price went way down since I got mine. Glad you got a deal on yours. It’s a really great tent.
@@OXFOOT i just ordered mine, waiting for it to be shipped out too.
HI OXfoot , thanks your review , may I ask with is the brand of your roof light bar ? thanks a lot
Great video! How us the wind noise when driving?
I have the sherpa rack also on my 4R, do I need extra mounts to clear the roof?
Hey Jason, have you notice a decrease in fuel economy with the xcover compared to gfc and skycamp because of the square shape and “soft shell” material? Thanks!
Hi Jason! Do you still think this is one of, if not best, RTTs that you’ve owned? Just ordered one 🤞🏻Thanks!
Perhaps if the vents were angled up instead of down or horizontal, it would be more like indirect lighting that shines up instead of down and it wouldn't be as intrusitve for sleeping?
I'm thinking of purchasing my first RTT.
Other than weight, wind noise, price I'm not able to find the difference between hard shell, soft shell tents.
Can you please make a video doing a detailed comparison. Esp in terms of ventilation, performance in rain/snow, folding after rain, etc etc type of aspects.
Thanks in advance.
I can see if I can work it in to the rotation but for the most part soft shell tents are usually a little bigger when opened. I think this one being a hybrid tent both had shell and softshell is probably my favorite tent. This thing is the easiest tent to ventilate I've ever had.
The one major downside to softshell tents is they are bigger and heavier typically so they do hurt mpg a little more than hard tents. Like I said I'll try to come up with a video out of it. Thanks.
its 12"H, is that height including the roof rails. Can they be removed?
How would you compare the performance of each of your tents in heavy wind? Colorado has been crazy windy and wind performance in roof top tents is not talked about enough in the industry. James Baroud is the only company I see that actually posts a wind rating of up to 75 MPH (which is incredible really).
So I’m all honesty the best tent for wind was the GFC as long as I faced it the right direction. This one is probably second. The Tepui I had was probably the worst and then after that was the skycamp 2.0. None of them were scary in the wind really but some performed better than others.
I’m also aware that the worst part of the wind is the rain fly flapping making it seem worse than it really is so it’s possible the GFC being the best was because it didn’t have a rain fly.
Torn between skycamp 2.0 and this x cover 2.0. 2 adults, an 8 year old and toddler. Kinda feel like the skycamp 2.0 looks awkward on tacomas. I have a 3rd gen and a Leitner bed rack. Leaning towards x cover more so. Any thoughts?
Curious what route you took. My BIL has the SkyCamp 2.0 on his TRX. I’ve slept in it and it was great. I have a Power Wagon and looking at the X-Cover 2.0 for myself, wife, two yr old, and one more on the east.
I just got one. I noticed that it doesn’t zip up like the older versions. Does rain sneak in while traveling under the fabric skirt?
I had originally wondered that too but no. It cinches up underneath so it’s actually less likely to leak.
what light bar and brackets of you have this the Sherpa roof rack?
Diode crosslink. I think Sherpa carries the bracket. They installed the bracket on mine.
Hey @OXFOOT - Did you have to make any adjustments to the IKamper mounting hardware to fit with your Sherpa rack? I heard from the Sherpa product manager that it's not a perfect fit as is. TIA.
Im not sure what had to be added to make it fit but runnin4tacos on IG is the shop that did it. They may have made some adjustments but I can’t think of any that I remember.
@@OXFOOT Great shop, just down the road from me! Thanks.
@@bobbygarcia8415 If you need any parts I think you can use code Oxfoot for 10% off possibly?
@@bobbygarcia8415 online you can but idk about in person.
So I am torn between the full size x cover or the mini. One hand I would like the extra room and the ability to have 3/4 people fit comfortably. But the other hand the mini would free up some more room for some pelican cases or potential solar panels on the rack. So far it just me, my gf, and my 70 lbs dog. Any advice?
You guys could fit in the mini but it would be a bit tight with the dog if he’s like mine and sprawls out. If you think you need the storage then you can get the air mattresses and put all the bedding inside if the tent to have more space inside to store stuff.
A bit more expensive for the full size one but not by too much.
Ended up pull the trigger on a 23zero armadillo x a couple of days ago. Thankfully he is a curler. So I think we should all fit if she comes with.
How does wind noise compare between the skycamp and the Xcover? Similar or the skycamp a lot better?
I’d say it’s about the same. I guess I could see if possibly being slightly worse because it’s the whole tent and not half of the tent with a hard side on one side? In my experience my ikamper 2.0 was slightly noisier but I had it in more high wind situations. I really do think it’s about 50/50 on that though.
Hardtops are much quieter hands down with less wind resistance because there is nothing flapping in the wind! Anyone that tells you different I would second guess their credibility in giving you an honest answer. Look at how much he fumbled and stumbled trying to set it up. With a hardtop for example the skycamp 3.0 there are two clamps you release ( with one hand if you want) and lightly push up on the hard shell as the gas struts do the rest and your tent is basically set up in seconds! It’s not even a close comparison! I have no skin in the game and don’t really care what people purchase but people should be honest when reviewing a product because others are basing their decisions on videos like this. Do your due diligence and review other comparisons before pulling the plug on a large purchase. Look at everything, size , weight, construction, wind resistance, fuel economy, are you taking it off road…soft top will catch on branches and tear, your must haves and wants, budget etc. and the list goes on. Sometimes companies will send out products to people to review and intern dictate what they can and cannot say. I’m not saying that this is the case, just be aware and do your homework.
Can you move the perma-mounted non iKamper ladder to the middle & skip using the iKamper ladder? If not, why not remove it?
I wanted to removed it but at this point it’s been on for 3 years and I’m not sure it can be removed.
What a pain in the ass open and closing! That is exactly why I like the hard shell!
Meh, I’ve need a lot of soft and hardshell tents and this isn’t much harder. Sleeping inside the vehicle is the way to go if you don’t like set up imo
@@OXFOOT
I could setup and take down a hardtop before you even had that set up. It’s not even close. Not to mention that with a hard top you’re not dealing with zippers which is a pain in the winter due to snow and freezing temperatures and summer due to dust getting into the zippers and making it difficult to open. Soft top is only good if you’re on a strict budget and can’t afford a hardtop. Even then in time you will wish you spent the extra for the hardtop just for the durability and convenience of setup and closing.
@@ctk3873 I mean, you’re telling someone who has had 5 hardshell tents… hell I have 2 hardshell tents literally at my house right now filming, lol; it’s really pretty close when I’m not filming and setting up the camera and all that. Opening might take 1 minute more and closing is probably faster than most hardshell tents. I don’t even run this tent anymore as I have hardshell tents but there’s really not that much of a difference. Also winter camped in this tent a ton without issue.
@@ctk3873 that being said, I am about to run the new inspired overland carbon fiber tent here soon so I’ll be back to full time hardshell tent life.
Hi. Have you had any issue with the sides of the cover? I’ve seen a guy that had issues on the long sides of the cover. The strap was not able to fit tight to the base of the tent so driving on highway it flaps and bugs and water got in.
I don’t know if I’m getting clear with my explanation 😅
Was that person using the first one or the second one? I never had any issues but I didn’t even have it for a full year before I switch to the tundra. There could be issues more long term but I had nothing wrong with it. It flapped a bit since it’s a fabric sided tent, but nothing that would cause it to come up.
Bingo!
Just another reasons amongst many others to go with a hardtop!
@@OXFOOT the second one, I mean de 2.0 like yours. In his case, the side fabric cover doesn’t get properly fitted tight with the tension rope. Pretty much causes a lot of tension and corrugation at the corners at both sides of the bucle but doesn’t fit tight along the long sides.
If it flapes it’s because it allows air flow getting inside the side panels. I don’t see it a problem in any condition but in dust.
Thanks!
I was looking at the xcover. I like the fit on a 4Runner but imho is way overpriced for a soft shell style tent. I wish it was around $2k
Have you checked marketplace for a X-Cover 1.0? Might be able to get them for that much.
I would say the tent is more hardshell than soft shell, but I get what you mean.
@@OXFOOT the opening mechanism, windows etc resemble the classic soft shell tents, the only thing is the hard top with cross bars which are a nice to have but still, hugely overpriced imho. Maybe that’s why you don’t see many around.
Supposed to be a sale for Memorial Day 23
It’s close to $2,000 now…
Looks like you're using ikamper's air mattresses. Know if any others that would fit? Most I'm seeing won't fit the odd footprint of the x cover
Hm, not really sure. I have the HEST foamy wide now and that’ll fit in almost every tent but it’s more than the iKamoer one lol
Truth be told I don’t even have the ikamper or even the 4Runner anymore so I couldn’t check on that anymore unfortunately
@@OXFOOT Yeah I saw you were working on a new build. Have fun! Maybe we'll bump into each other out there... I'm also in Colorado (Denver)
Would you say an adult and 3 kids fit easily in the x-cover?
How old are the kids? I would say if there is a tent out there that would fit it, this one would be it. Have a buddy who does him, his wife, kid and big dog in one.
According to their website the dimensions are two mattresses that are 78”X 80”
@@OXFOOT 3 all under 6 years old. Wife isn't not big on camping. So it'll be me and our boys.
Seems like a RTT tent would be 😊 be until they're older and I'll get a GFC or Topo topper.
@@delvinmorales9458 Yeah that should be plenty. I'd imagine you all would fit in there. It's technically rated a 4 person tent but when it comes to kids I'd imagine it'd be easier.
In 48 hrs I'll be dead...
What? You’ll be dead?
Why I Switched To iKamper…. It Was FREE! 😂😂😂
I bought the first ikamper two years ago and this one was not free.
With 33.8k followers okay. I find that hard to believe but we as viewers have to take your word for it. This is the 1st time coming across one of your videos.
I do like you honestly.
