Such a lovely conversation! The saying about growing old is not guaranteed, is such a good perspective. My 22 year old daughter passed away 4 years ago, I now look at aging as a privilege that she was denied.

I'm so sorry about your loss. I have the same attitude as you. My husband died at 44 years old when I was younger than he. Every day that we wake up is a gift.
A close friend died when I was 39. Until that moment, I assumed we'd be best friend 'til the end, growing old and laughing together well into our 80s or 90s, as our Moms and Grandmas did. It changed my whole perspective on life. I had been a much 'harder/tougher' person than my friend. Her death cracked me open -- and I found empathy for every person, regardless of how much I personally liked or dislikes them. It also made me much more patient with people, with traffic, with life. After all, maybe that guy who just cut you off in traffic is rushing to a hospital to say goodbye to a loved one. You never know what struggle another person is going through.

I am 43, single and going gray. I am tired of suppressing my age. So I stopped and I don't mind my wrinkles or my grays. They show my wisdom.
Me too..I'm 45 and I just had my first child ...my miracle baby ....i have salt and pepper hair and all people can notice is that I'm an old mom and that my child will be told their mommy is "old" that comment hurt me so much cos why should it matter. The fact is I AM old and my "old" body gave birth to a beautiful baby 🙏

Aging is cultural related. In many societies in the world, getting older is not maligned and in fact honored and respected.

It’s not unimportant in this conversation that she is not actively seeking to date nor is she actively seeking acting roles in Hollywood. Both of these goals factor into women’s decisions to attempt to appear younger at 65.

Amen, growing old is a privilege. It’s sad that the pressure to stay young forever has pushed so many celebrities to alter their appearance through surgeries. I think that Andie is growing older beautifully, naturally, & gracefully. She truly is just as beautiful as ever.
Its not a privilege if you became 100…..so…how long it stays a privilege…? 60,70,80,90…..life is too short but the body doesnt feel that way when you are 100…your body will convice you of the opposite…that he cant anymore…the only luck is not to suffer too much….
Youth doesn’t work like that anyway, which is so odd when people say someone doesn’t age because they have a small amount of wrinkles and dyed hair. Have a good bloodtest...THAT is youth! In Scandinavia many men and women have gray hair and it’s not viewed as losing beauty or being old, it’s viewed as a privilege to be fortunate enough to grow older (some sadly don’t even reach their 1 year old birthday, so why not celebrate life and the years we get)!
I think that people who age naturally are far more attractive than those who alter their faces. It looks so unnatural. McDowell was, is and always will be beautiful inside and out.
Sad thing is they are still ageing in the inside and don't seem to be aware. The prettiest corpse in the cemetery still means they are dead.

Andie's got great bone structure, thick hair, beautiful skin--but all that is eclipsed by her wonderful energy and spirit, which imbues her with an incredible glow. She's also become a more authentic actress as she's gotten older. It's a pleasure to see her grow and change.

As a man who is older and greyer, I endorse her exact words and her sentiments. 'I want to be old, I was young' and now I am enjoying it (old age) as I did when I was younger. Great actress and great advice for the younger ones, 'to age gracefully is truly a blessing from God'.
I stopped dyeing mine at 50, I am now 64 and it's the best condition it has ever been and waist length. I was standing in the street in the UK and a family of Americans went past. The daughter doubled back and said how lovely my hair was. I like to give complements to other women ..we re all on this path so let's celebrate!
I never dyed my hair at all. I lost a bit of hair, then again I'm a guy 🤣🤣🤣
I'd much rather get genuine compliments on my face or figure!! If you make your HAIR YOUR BEST FEATURE, then that distracts from a beautiful face and a hot bod!! You'll just get noticed for your hair.... not complimentary at all!!

I stopped coloring my hair a year ago and I feel so free. I applaud her.
Me, too. I have waist-length hair, so it will all take a while. LOL But, I'm not yet 100% gray. After 40 years of experimenting with my hair color I'm tired of it. It's au naturale or nothing!
I decided that enough was enough several years ago, and it truly is liberating. My hair grows really fast, and I love not having to constantly deal with that half inch of after growth... I have been waiting since forever to get the gorgeous, silvery white hair that most women in my family get as they mature. I have been stuck with a "salt, pepper and cinnamon" situation for a decade, but it's me, and that's okay.

@@ThatOpalGuy I started with experimenting with different colors. My hair is naturally auburn. I've been full-on flaming red, strawberry blonde different levels of brown, black, and most recently peek-a-boo mermaid green teal, and blue. Mostly I did it for fun. The more natural colors I did while working in the legal industry. It was seen as good grooming to color away the grays. I haven't been in that field since 2003, though.

This is the horrible baloney. She has botox and fillers and maybe an occasional face lift. The only thing she did give up was colouring her hair. Maybe she is allergic, so one has no option but just stop it
When she speaks, you can see lines and wrinkles on her face, she doesn’t have anything done.

Watched their show together last year and I loved it, it was very moving. A really refreshing show (about domestic violence) with all the meaningless crap that's produced today. I'd love to watch her new series, too, but I don't like movies/series about physical diseases. They make me so sad.
I can't say, at 79, that I love being old, but it still beats the alternative.
I am reading a book called 'Hagtitude' by Sharon Blackie and really puts a new perspective on getting older plus I find at 60 I care less about what others think of me and that is so liberating! Andi does look beautiful as an older lady it doesn't have to equate to just being young its just a different kind of beauty that shines out from within too with deeper wisdom!

As a woman of 42, I excite in seeing my "tinsel" coming in. I welcome aging, I love it! I wish more women did as well. But I feel like we'll be seeing more of this 😁💖 Thank you Andie! Growing older is a privilege denied to many...I feel so fortunate to be in my 60s and having fun doing things I love. You are both stunning!
Well said! My grandmother used to say that all the time, not everybody gets that privilege. And like you, I'm doing fun things I love......I started ballet at 47....still going strong 6 years later (I dance 6-7 hours every week; I would do more if I could afford it ).
But what about those who have horrible health because of aging? Thats not a privilege. People stuck in nursing homes due to age related disease can no longer do the things they love or enjoy the freedom that aging is supposed to bring according to some.
Andie is fabulous! There's something really charming and likeable about her. Very refreshing.
She's still gorgeous which is probably why she was comfortable let her hair go grey.

I notice that most of the women who say that ageing is wonderful look amazing. Its all very well for a good looking older woman like her to say that ageing is wonderful and that we should embrace it, but not everyone gets to age beautifully like her, and most of those women hate getting older. It affects everyone's looks, self esteem and mental health differently so we need to respect everyones view and not judge

Age is more about lost of energy
I'm almost 60 and only of average looks, but I still embrace aging. It's all about being comfortable in your own skin. Some think I'm "confident." I guess to a point, but I wanted to look like someone else since I'm 15 and it was only the past decade or so I appreciated my own looks. Hell, I wish I was way smarter too, but I'm not. Whether we're young, middle age, or old, women can be too hard on themselves. Just appreciate what you have; a genuine smile is a natural face-lift. ❤ Looks are just a part of it though, the real hard part of growing older is all the loved ones getting sick or dying. That knocks you for a loop and you can't help that it shows on your face ... tired and worried...but it means I felt deeply about people.
Actually, aging is probably more psychologically disturbing for beautiful people because they're used to being the ideal, and getting older, especially as a woman, is not ideal in America. However, taking care of yourself can do a lot to help someone age gracefully, even if you don't have favorable genetics for aging or are not naturally good-looking.
@@emem2863 Yes it def is harder because much more of your identity is wrapped up in it. But for me I wouldnt have minded going from beautiful to plain, because you can still have fun with makeup, fashion and hair even if you arent stunning. But aging really wrecked my face and made me look so hideous I didnt even want to leave the house. I know people say it shouldnt matter but it does unfortunately. It just crushes your self esteem. Its nice of people to say that 'Im beautiful anyway' but honestly, who are they kidding. Pep talks about trying to redefine beauty or appreciating my personality didnt help me feel better ) : I def feel a lot better from lifting everything using magnesium oil of all things. It works like a charm but sadly far too complicated to explain how to do

Young is so overrated. Enjoy it as much as you can because it’s HARD. Life requires a lot of us, and getting hung up on our age, which we have no control over, only makes it harder at every age. Enjoy your youth, but don’t try to hold on to it. Life gets a whole lot better as you go. 😊👍

I went gray/natural in 2019. I love it! After dying my hair for 10 years, it was a relief to stop. The chemicals, mess and the cost of dying my hair black every 3 months or so...exhausting.
"The truth of the matter is, 'I'm old, and that's okay.' .... Why do we have so much shame attached to getting older? Because it is an important and valuable time in our lives." Well said, Andie. I am exactly Andie's age, and I have never felt more secure in who I am, not worrying about anyone else's opinion about me. I'm just cherishing the people that I have in my life knowing that nothing material is going to last including my body. I am stronger spiritually, having let go living up to superficial expectations that matter little in the big picture of life.

I haven’t felt inspired in a long time but her attitude towards life and age is magic. I’m 32 and just getting the pressures to look “younger” and I have no idea why. I’ve been 20, I’ve been 25 and now I’m 32. I look forward to enjoying my life at every age. Not grasping at straws to look 21 forever. She’s one of the few “role models” out there
Here’s a tip, the sooner you embrace that you’re old, the better you can be the best old person you can be like she’s describing. Because otherwise you’re just going to be waiting for that moment when you say, “oh I’m old now.”
I’m over 40 now , I could’ve done that when I was 35, because looking back it’s some where between 30 and 35 that youth passes, even if you look younger.
@@hirsch4155 If your goal was never chasing youth there’s nothing to embrace. I’m just my age. I never woke up needing to embrace being young. I don’t necessarily think there’s anything to embrace about getting older. Just enjoy it.

@@lisavanderpump7475 yeah it is you’re right, and nothing wrong with living in the moment obviously but the thing about aging is that the transition from being asked for ID and being called sir or mam happens very fast lol. Might as well embrace it. Just like embracing being in the prime of youth. After mid 30s there’s no going back. You can still be “youthful” but it’s not the same . Like she says it affects the career . But affects lots else .It makes for a more grounded life if you come to terms with that early . Like she says, people know what to do with you if you own it.
She took issue with the young interviewer because the question was reinforcing a narrative , that it’s sad to get old. It’s not, the prime of life isn’t the be all end all .
I’m turning 59 soon and I love this message. I have no interest in dating someone 20-30 years younger. Maybe 10 years younger but even then it’s not easy to have things in common…depends on the person, of course. I’d date Andie or Katie in a heartbeat and it’s not because of their fame. Both amazing women

I agree with Andie. Embrace your age. I’m 71, and stopped dyeing my hair about 4 years ago. Gee, my hair got healthier and thicker, and felt nice to the touch. Yeah, people do see me differently than I feel because of the platinum blonde color, but I like it. Also, no facelift and no makeup. Again, it feels good to concentrate on health, and beauty from the inside out.
SO admire her. She is so empowered and grounded in reality, What a beautiful enlightened soul. Love you Andie. It's crazy that this is even a topic of discussion, when you step back and look at the big picture. What a crazy world we live in.

But people who get work done can be good people too. Its not nice to look in the mirror and hate what you see. it doesnt matter how much people want us to embrace aging etc, if ageing has made our faces look ugly, its very hard to feel good about yourself-just the same as if a woman who has lost her hair gets depressed. But no one every tells them that theyre 'over reacting' or that they should just embrace it
Love her. Just so refreshing to see women like her and Jamie Lee Curtis out there and being fabulous. They have so much to offer. And love how she cautions to not judge other women for whatever choices they make.
So fabulous to see a famous woman embrace her natural hair colour. I had to stop dyeing my hair due to allergies. I did not want to go grey but I had no choice. Now that it’s all grown out I absolutely love it! I get stopped by random strangers telling me how wonderful my hair looks. It’s so healthy and soft. I feel a million bucks…..yay to hair dye allergies!
I never had so many compliments until i let my grey hairs take over my head, from elegance to natural, from original to vibrant and organic...love them all!😅

@@lynnyhen Listen, I stopped dying when I thought I had allergies to the absolute junk I was putting in it. I treated the problem with a shampoo (dermatologist) and let me tell you I am 56 and about 70% grey and love it. I also have my DL, I know…but I colored my hair for it and I look so much older as it draws attention to the rest of my face. When hair is grey, we expect the other characteristics, not flaws!
My mom was coloring her hair during the 90s with those reds that were the trend and she was my age, now (56). I went to see her and it took her 2 days to ask me why I don’t color my hair…I was waiting for her to ask! I told her it was a pain in the keister and dyed hair made me look older.
Andie is the reason I decided to go white last year. A couple of years ago I saw that she wanted to stop dyeing her hair black and she grew out her grey hair. Called herself a silver fox. I was getting tired of dyeing my hair for 20 plus years and plucking out the white hairs so I cut all my hair off in Sept and have been letting the white hair grow in. It's been really freeing. So tired of all these beauty standards here in America for older women.

The way I feel is that I had my "day in the sun" and if it's someone else's turn now, so be it. So don't feel bad if you aren't getting the reactions you used to. Just be the best YOU that you can be, and do it for yourself.

I love Andie's philosophy and thinking on getting older and not to be slamming other women for how they choose to do it. However, as an Andie fan, it made me sad how honest she was when she said we don't have time left...we are at the end of our lives. I will be sad when this beautiful and inspirational person goes, if she goes before me. And she is so right, I too know we don't have time to waste anymore. I am trying to save as many animals as I can before I go.

I stopped coloring about 7 years ago. Stay the course, I bet you'll love it and wish you'd done it sooner! I get compliments on my (now) healthy, shiny platinum hair all the time. Never got compliments on it when I colored it!
Andie didn’t do this naturally. Hate to tell you this. She went to Jack Martin. He told me she was getting her hair done by him while I was sitting in his salon getting my hair done silver. Hers is silver color to match her roots. The average cost is about 5,000.00 for one visit. The guy did Jane Fonda, Francis Fisher, Sharon Osborne. He is a huge gossip and brags about all his famous clients. He’s overpriced and not very good at what he does unless you pay him a lot and see him for multiple touchups. Most of his celebrity clients will take the color recipe back to their celebrity stylist and have them touch up the silver color monthly. Facts.

Andie has the money to make it possible to hasten the process, so she did.
I’ve friends who decided the same but a couple couldn’t finish waiting the months it took so they started dyeing once again. During covid they were at home so they started the process again and to their delight were able to return to their natural hair! It takes courage to take the leap, but it is so worthwhile.
I just turned 76, I’ve let my hair remain natural for 20+ years. I never colored it completely…I tried highlights and lowlights for a couple of years .. liked very much how my hair looked. But I made a decision in 2001 that instead of spending the $$$ it cost I would set $$$ aside and help families who were in great need of assistance in the country of my birth. The joy and blessings I have felt does more for me than any $$ spent on my hair. We each have choices…best to applaud the decisions others make…it is so much better than judging others… and it can also be exhausting. …as Andie said.🧡🌟 Blessings 🌺🌸
@@Cwgrlup Who cares how she did it. She is graying slowly. At her age people usually have thick grey roots. My hair is completely grey on top. Not quite there yet. My hair at 66 is growing slowly! She looks and is fabulous.

@@Eva-oe3se I have never colored my hair(the whole thing, only highlights a few times). Embracing the natural can be freeing. Helen Mirren comes to mind, the natural hair color, for so long, I know I am used to it, would be a jolt for her at this point to color her hair. Maybe that is how it is for you with Andie, those long dark locks such a signature look for her. Hopefully you can see her beauty through the lack of dark color. We ALL grow older, men often embrace the gray(George Clooney, Steve Martin), why not women? Respect your opinion, hope you respect mine.
I spent a large portion of my life coloring my hair and wearing makeup, and while there is nothing wrong with that I have to say that I love myself more fully since ditching all of it and embracing everything including my silver hairs. When I first ditched the dye, I referred to it as my christmas tree tinsel, because it's super pretty against my naturally dark hair. A few people hgave been snide, but I decided that to be judging others on their appearance is a pretty low blow, especially if we are fit and happy with ourselves. I like this message coming from a person who has a large following. You are enough, and probably more than you know!😁

Andie MacDowell is the only celebrity I have ever seen in real life. I grew up in Montana and had a layover in SLC on my way home from some trip. Mrs. MacDowell also lived in Montana at that time (no idea if she still does) and was waiting to board a flight home as well. Just saw her off in the distance across the terminal and thought: "Huh. I f***in' love Groundhog Day." She is just as lovely now as she was then (90s).
I do feel there's less time to waste...and notice I'm more confident in my convictions, and have little doubts left in life. I love maturity!!

Andie I just love you and your sincere, honest, and empowering view on aging women. I just turned 69 and my hair is natural too. I chose to avoid coloring because I don't do anything to my body that may cause cancer. I eat, bathe, breathe natural resources as much as I can so I can embrace my senior years with good health and energy.

I think your hair is gorgeous. I started going grey in my 20's, as my Dad had . Of course , at that age I colored it. However, at 34 I got breast Cancer and lost my hair to chemo. When it grew back in , it seemed too delicate to put dyes on it so I let it grow in, and it has been white ever since.Since I went grey so young I do not associate grey hair with age. I have had white hair now for 40 years.

I love Andie. She understands that you're 65 no matter what color your hair is. I gave up coloring nearly a year ago, and I love the gray that's coming in. Having dyed my hair since I was in my early 30s and always considering myself a brunette, plus realizing that people think gray is old, made it tough, but I love the nuances in the colors coming in. Let me tell you, it looks so much more natural at age 61 than the dyed hair did, and it IS natural. Gray is a beautiful color. Silver is a beautiful color. We need to embrace it.

Now at 33, I am at a point where in I absolutely love what used to make me insecure when I was younger. It is so freeing. Gray hair is beautiful! Getting older is a privilege! Women need to see more women embrace getting older. I’m turning 40 and I see all of these ads stating that you pretty much have no value after 40, so it has been a hard transition, but this is super encouraging! Thank you❤️
I feel so much more valuable to myself at 47 than I did in the past. Maybe I'm not as valuable to advertisers, but I'm ok with that. The beauty of growing older is learning to ( like Andie said) develop compassion and empathy for yourself and others through your experiences.

I've been color free for three years now and feel wonderful. The only thing I can say is you have to be ready for it, make your own decision, love yourself. I'm in my 70's and last year in the heat of a Southern summer I got a buzz cut I was thrilled, walked different, felt better it was a wonderful feeling.
I know where you are coming from BB. I will be 70 this year. Got a semi buzz cut today. Little bit of 2 months old high/low lights on top.
I recently went grey and honestly I can’t believe how much easier and cheaper it is. I get a lot of mixed reactions but mainly people thinking I have aged because of my hair. I just think that it’s so sad. I just don’t want to dye my hair anymore. It’s sad that more of us can’t embrace our real hair colour. The beauty industry has honestly done a number on us.
But people disliked ageing hundreds and thousands of years ago before there was a beauty industry. Just just human biology to not like ageing, its not about being influenced by the media. Its great to admire women for embracing their age, but it always seems to come at the cost of shaming those who want to get a little work done. I also think many women look great grey but Im not one of them, but thankfully I just do it at home so its half an hour every moth for £8 so it can be cheap and easy to switch from a salon if thats what people are worried about

I did this 4 years ago when I was noticing young women were purposefully doing their hair gray. I just turned 50. I’ve gotten more compliments since I went natural then when I colored it. I have a really cool “stripe”, and I feel unique. It’s incredibly freeing! When I get compliments on my platinum “highlights “, I tell them God did them! 😊
I agree. But what s the other option of getting old, right?! What s important is go natural but not let herself totally go. Being healthy is always the first priority
You are mistaken heaps with this. NOT God did it. God created us to live forever, never die, never get ill, never get old. What you call "God's work" it is actually the devile's work. Jus read the Bible. So, we should not be happy when we see that we are aging, but do against it what we can.

I am so glad that Andie is giving women permission to go grey. Like her, I started going grey during the lockdown. Other women doing the same broke th barrier for me. I decided to keep growing out my grey grow out. I was a brunette and it's fun to have light colored hair. Coloring my hair was a hassle as I can't stand the look of grey roots. That is what feels aging. I love my grey. I feel pretty.

I love your hair. It looks age appropriate and you look amazing. I love being 60. I do not care about being young. I'm loving life as a 60 year old and loving the senior's discounts. I earned every single gray hair and so did you, Andie. Embracing age is the way to go.

I am a former hairdresser the same age as Andie and went grey over 5 years ago. I have had more compliments on my hair color--even from young men than ever! She looks fantastic and I am so glad to see her be a role model for being comfortable where one is and embracing it. It's time we come out of those archaic cultural belief systems.
Same here. Old hairdresser and went grey about 5 years ago. More complements on my grey hair than when I colored it.
I also let my hair naturally" highlight "itself 6-7 years ago. I get more compliments now on my hair, but when I suggest to other women to just let theirs go naturally, they just shrink back in horror and say " Oh, I could never do that!" Kinda makes me feel that I'm a monster on one hand, and incredibly sorry for them on the other. If they only knew how freeing it is to be your authentic self!

Those who deny the reality of aging miss out on a treasure that is in the present season. Every age phase has its value. I found a "hiding place" when I turned 65. Those I didn't need around me anymore (and didn't want to be), didn't come around anymore, but the true gems in my life stayed through it all. They are few, but they are constant. Nothing is guaranteed.

Andie is so wise and yet I found myself wanting to tell her - the younger man older woman thing is all about the individual people and their unique relationship together. I’ve been with a 20 year younger man for 11 plus years and I never would have dreamed of it before meeting him, as in only him. I highly doubt a relationship would have ever happened with someone 20 years younger just because they were 20 years younger. So, in all your wisdom Ms. Andie - it’s not about the age difference. @@mariaobregon9604 there is no such thing as grey hair. When our hair loses pigment it becomes white. The hair gives an overall grey appearance when we have white hairs mixed with darker hairs. When we no longer have darker hairs, our hair looks snow white.
Andie is still gorgeous!! I love her new show on hallmark , “the way home!” She’s only a year or 2 older than me…& is working it still…..not many can do this…. I love her spirit!! I stopped dyeing my hair a few years ago…..I’m ok with that……lets empower women and keep it positive! Love her!
Andie is so genuine, and that's what I love about her. If we could all just be genuine and accept and embrace each other for that, it would be awesome. Whether you dye your hair or not. I still wear makeup. I feel good that way. I went silver during the pandemic, and YES it makes me look older. But, I AM older. I am "invisible" to so many people now, and I DON'T CARE! I am more myself than I have ever been, and it's delicious!
