URGENT: Matti, I donât think youâre seeing the entire picture. Youâre attaching the negative term CZcamsr to your channel when you donât have to. Your channel can be whatever you want it to be. You have over 1 million subscribers to help support whatever you love to do. As an example, your channel could become a behind-the-scenes channel on whatever filmwork you decide you want to work on.
Most people subscribe to your channel because they like you. Youâre a very likable guy. Use your channel to promote what you love. Donât take too long of a hiatus and throw years of hard work down the drain. Use what you built to your advantage.
We all wish you the best but use the 1M+ subscribers that God already blessed you with wisely. We are rooting for you.

I agree, the use of âJust a CZcamsrâ seems a little obtuse seeing that CZcams is the platform that got him to where he is today, itâs okay to transition and grow, but thereâs no need to knock something especially when it gave him his success. I feel like something has shifted with Matti in the last year. Far less authenticity. It comes off more as empire building and this particular video really leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you. Itâs very tone deaf. Without YT Matti would be nothing. Thereâs nothing wrong with pursuing bigger narrative projects or docs or filming on an Arri. Thereâs also nothing wrong with making YT videos, especially when everything you have in your life from the gear, to the Tesla, the vacations and the connections you have are because of YT. I get what heâs saying but this could have been said in a much more inclusive way. Instead, this just comes off as narcissistic film snobbery

I have an "in the middle" approach right now. Because I currently work as a producer at a big agency. I wanted to take the traditional route directing but now I want the flexibility and power to create the things that make me happy at my own rhythm. I also don't want to go to the other extreme of just doing things that are cool for the sake of coolness you know. Let's see where this takes me.

The real reason why "Big youtubers" are unhappy and unmotivated to make videos nowadays is because they are dissatisfied with their decreasing views.

Hey Matti, course correction is a great way of putting it. To be brutally honest, I've enjoyed the more "filmmaking" style of content you've been putting out, alot more than the "usual" youtuber style content. The Lawrence Sher video was superb. Granted I'm a camera nerd, but it was very refreshing to watch. The big thing I've noticed, and take this for what it's worth, is that you're energy has absolutely shifted. i worked as a cam op for a 10M sub youtube channel for 3 years, but i'm just like you, i love filmmaking than anything else, so i left the channel and open my own film studio. It's not easy but i can feel it's worth it, even if i failed i still feel happy because i did try. Good luck with the serious filmmaking Matti!

I feel you on the lighting aspect of filmmaking, I did my classes online and lighting is the one spot I wish I could have been on campus with instructors because I don't think I fully figured it out.
Hopefully with your future video on lighting I can learn more and become better at it.

Great move! I feel like 99% of video/photo CZcamsrs or filmmakers have just turned into gear reviewers and exactly that CZcamsrs not filmmakers. The magic of the scene left and replaced with flashy new products so massive respect for this and canât wait to see what you make in the future. Before you talked about the camera you are using here, I was saying out loud how beautiful it looked! WOW!
Glad to hear your are taking time to really think about what you want in life and taking steps towards that!
Itâs not that you are afraid of having less knowledge about lighting. Itâs more about understanding, that big sets work with big crews, where the right personnel is responisble for creating the looks that you need. Itâs part of a cinematographers job to have a massive network of people, making connections with gaffers and integrate them into your work ethos. Being a cinematographer also means, to be a âpossible-makerâ for productions companies, guiding them to the right crew and also giving away a lot of tasks to your trusted gaffers.
What you are teaching as a youtuber is a lot of gear-stuff in all sorts of departments (camera, light, audio, grip, post, etc.), which leads to people being these one man shows with a good basic knowledge. I see more and more of these content creators, who build up their own lights, set up the mic, operate the camera by themselves, direct the talent on their own⊠which ultimately leads to them being burned out pretty quickly and also creating these markets, where clients learn how much is possible for paying less.
Iâm not saying being a youtuber / content creator is a bad thing. But it should be more transparent and honesty (or even brave) about all the topics, that are also essentiell to being a filmmaker: talking to clients, how do you find crew? How do you guide people? How do you give away tasks? How do you talk with a director? How do you come after expectations? etc. etc. I could go on foreverâŠ
It sometimes feels like being a cinematographer is 90% communication⊠because: Filmmaking is a team effortđ€

Honestly, I see a big trend on CZcams in the past couple of years - where it seems like "quality" videos are reigning supreme. For example, Mr. Beast or Mark Rober. Not to speak on the content necessarilly, but the planning, storytelling, production, teams. I think the next phase of CZcams is really LESS videos MORE quality. I think you can use your platform to showcase what you could do if you dedicated yourself to 1 video a month instead. Or less even. Whatever it is that you need. Solid video Matti. I've been a subscriber for I'm not even sure how many years going back to the Travel Feels days. I definitely have felt the recent shift or spark with the more filmmaking and cinema content and it's all been great. It's super cool that CZcams is this community and platform to share all the knowledge and these type of ideals cause we all go through it with all our respective things. This video spoke to me since Iâm in the early stages of my channel and filmmaking journey. Thereâs such stigmas and negative connotations attached to being a âCZcamsrâ but I think thatâs on itâs way out since we have more ârealâ filmmakers on the platform with credibility behind them. I think by making videos you want to make and creating work youâre proud of, the negative title of âCZcamsrâ will fade since we have people like you, Danny, Mark and many more small creators bridging that gap. Keep going and I canât wait to see what else youâre going to create!

Itâs great to hear you are going to make tutorials again, I was disappointed when you stopped and actually unsubbed for a while but came back when you started doing the original style again. As far as being a CZcamsr, just post when you have something to say.
Love it Matti, I love filmmaking as well, and now I do it for free. I started in the late 80's, a different time. Had to get into a new career at the time. Live in the Nashville TN area, at the time Music Videos were very popular, then lost it's popularity, anyway became a IT Salesman. Many Many yrs later, gotten back into to filmmaking, but do it for free for local music artists with no budget to produce music videos, or weddings, or corporate videos for the company I work for. But everything I do, I treat like a feature film in my eye. Maybe, one day, when I retire I can go back to it full time. Big fan, learned a lot. Keep on keeping on.
I hope you write and direct some cool stuff this year and submit it to festivals!
One thing I learned about myself on YT is that I became someone who wasn't really me. I was trying to become what people wanted to see. I miss it but taking a break was great for my time with God, myself and my Family.
I will eventually come back but not until I feel like i have that free time to do so.
I appreciate you sharing your story because it helps me think of my time on YT in a different way

Seems to me that YT can the perfect place to start learning film making skills as you journey to a higher destination. You get to network, learn, get instant feedback on your work, and grow in whatever direction you choose. It's a natural progression...much like how amateur theatre prepares performers for professional work. Only the individual creator can choose if and when they want to move forward, and they should never have to feel bad when they reach that decision. After all, we each have our own lives to live, so don't live them for somebody else.
Matti, I will miss you when you go, but I'm thrilled that you will be following your dreams!
