    Great episode Ryan! I love what Blackmagic is doing for independent film. When you combine their hardware with their software, professional quality results have never been more accessible for regular working class filmmakers. They've had Adobe on its toes more and more with their continual improvements to Resolve, and now Canon and Sony are feeling the heat as well. Love it.

    Dang, the built in ND filters might be a selling point for me. I was going to get the normal 6K already, but ND's are well worth the price increase for on the go filming.

    • @paul.grohmann
      @paul.grohmann Před 3 lety +8

      Especially bc you're going to have to buy them anyways for your lenses. And if you buy good ones you easyly spend more. Same with the extra batteries that you'd have to buy going with the normal one. Still need them, but not as many. You're probably saving some money in the long term

    • @professionalpotato4764
      @professionalpotato4764 Před 3 lety

      Would it make a difference though? They're still in steps, so it's likely you'll never be shooting at native ISO outdoors without lighting and modifiers.

      @cfl4286 Před 3 lety +3

      Totally. A good set of NDs is already more than the difference between the regular 6K and the 6K pro. Plus the better battery and swivel screen are an opus upgrades. This was a great move by blackmagic.

    • @NielsGramsen
      @NielsGramsen Před 3 lety +2

      To be honest I have seen some reviews already popping up of the ND filters having decent tints, the higher the stop the higher the tint, which indicates that the ND filters are not as high quality as some claim.

    I see lots of people wishing for IBIS, but I think it’s important to note that you’d also be sacrificing some things by incorporating that. With most “cinema” cameras it is often assumed you will be doing your own stabilization, and cameras with IBIS often have issues using these forms of stabilization. For example, adding IBIS makes it unusable as a crash cam in cars due to the micro jitters and jello. IBIS also makes it more difficult to fit internal NDs into the camera body. As usual, I think it comes down to what tool works best for what you’re doing.

    • @marcuscisneros8528
      @marcuscisneros8528 Před 3 lety +7

      If rather have IBIS than internal ND tbh, i can always screw on a variable ND to a lens and use step up rings. i love being able to move a camera handheld and know it will be smooth

    • @kolecava
      @kolecava Před 3 lety +7

      I just don't get this IBIS need. No, no thank you. I can use my body or just heavier setup and slowmotion to make it "shake free" or just get OIS lens. I think people who request this are certainly not experienced or really have the need for this camera. Same for continuous AF, I'd love it, but it's not truly needed. All it would do is add unnecessary costs ..

    • @kolecava
      @kolecava Před 3 lety +2

      @@marcuscisneros8528 just use your body, I don't want anything correcting my image unless I choose to. Additionally, IRNDs are great for run and gun or times where you simply do not have time on shoot schedule to be messing with matte boxes and screw ons. I think IBIS is rather amateur request considering there is pleathora of ways to combat it. If anything for solo run and gun shooters AF would be better, but then maybe the cinema line isn't really what you are looking for.

    • @imiy
      @imiy Před 3 lety +6

      @@kolecava slowmo just for sake of "stabilizing" - that is amateur.
      Anyway, all those features improve the filming process and make it more accessible. There's no point of saying "cinema cameras don't have IBIS and AF, and that's it". Like you're not pro if requesting that. Like it's some kind of religious burden "pros" must carry for some magical reason. Bullshit! Everything is changing. If focus pullers and dollies, gimbals, and steadicams won't be needed anymore at some point - that will be a huge relief and a big step forward.

The piece of mind I got going from an FS5 (always at F5 or higher) to the DPAF on my C200 was an absolute game-changer. Not all AF is created equal, BTW. Nice upgrades all around (what the original 6K should have been), but the biggest misstep for me is the EF-mount. RF would made it MUCH more versatile and worth upgrading from previous versions. As much as I like the upgrades and built-in ND would be quite nice, I'll stick with my BMPCC 4K. Maybe the BMPCC 6K "Max" or "Ultra" will have RF mount?

  • @ToastedSynapseGaming
    @ToastedSynapseGaming Před 3 lety +3

    There's an interesting battle between IBIS (in-body stabilization) and Internal NDs. And I kind of get the physics behind it, since the sensor needs to move, but it also needs to stay still in relation to the ND glass. So the solution is kind of finicky. Design an IBIS strong enough to move the ND together with the sensor (but you also have ND motors and cables)
    OR, what I think would be the next step in the future, because we already have a glimpse of that in today's cameras: A LOT of Native ISOs (including very low ISOs), as ISOs in digital cameras are just basically reading/amplifying/dampening the sensitivity of the sensor. Think of it like your mobile phone charger that takes a lot of Volts out of a wall socket and transforms it into less Volts for your phone. So a Dual Native ISO basically means 2 "Transformers" attached to the same sensor, and the camera switches between the 2 when it reaches a certain ISO. So how about we have 10-20 Native ISOs, including LOWER ISOs. I'm talking ISO 20, 10, 5 or even ISO 1. That will be your ND filter, the Electrical Ability of your camera to Lower the sensitivity of what the sensor is seeing. Similar to how Volume knobs lower the amplitude of the sound that is being heard on the speakers.
    I'm calling it now, in 5-10 years we'll be debating whether to get this 20 Native ISO camera or the other one that has 25 Native ISOs... And this is because "parts" are becoming smaller as we evolve (so you can maybe fit 4 transformers in the space of 1) but also more complex so maybe you can have a transformer that handles like 4 bands within the same circuit.

    Was nice to hear comments comparing the bmpcc4k with this camera as (it seems) everyone else is only comparing the two 6k’s! I hope BM do a 4K pro for all those that have invested in M43’s! Also, many older computer systems struggle with 6k, factoring in a new NLE system is not for everyone! Most material shot that is delivered online is never higher than 4K, moreover, still a huge majority of it is HD. Sure, it’s nice to be able to crop, built-in ND’s, tillable screen.. but we’re talking only ergonomics. However, from my understanding of IBS, I’m not sure (with current technology) that this would be a wise move as users have complained with the GH5 that this can detrimentally affect the image.. there are videos on this I believe. After all, Arri don’t use IBS on their mini cameras, though I must admit this doesn’t mean that in principle this is not a good idea, and of course technology will improve.
    Still a great camera by the looks of it. Food for thought eh?! Thanks for the review.

    So much temptation!! Argh! I think I'm still going to stick with the 4k because of how well it suits my current needs with the setup I have. Although if you're looking into buying a Blackmagic, then I truly believe that the 6k Pro is the way to go. For some folks it probably is worth the upgrade to this from the 4k. Just not for me... yet... but if they add IBIS sometime in the near future, then I won't be able to resist anymore. It'll all be over at that point :)

      As a recent grad myself, everyone in your classes will ask you to shoot if you’ve got the cool camera, be that for better or worse. My school was really tight on letting us get gear, so I’m wishing I had mine before I graduated. Since graduating, I haven’t gotten a job because of the camera, but because of connections and my general experience. Just keep that in mind, gear will get you plenty of student work, but the rest of the world doesn’t think you’re a rock star just because you have a cool camera.

      If you can afford the camera body, lenses, tripod, rigging, lighting, microphones, editing computer, and data storage, without going into debt, then go for it! otherwise rent as required until you can buy directly from your own pocket. If you haven't bought any equipment yet start with audio and lighting. Investing in lighting and audio (equipment and skillset) will make more of a difference to your work than the camera will.

Quick question, what is the audio quality/ internal Amp like when you plus in a shot gun mic using a xlr to mini xlr into the camera. I'm thinking about using this camera for foreign trips so I can travel much lighter in terms of equipment (current have an Arri Amira set up) and I would need to plug a shotgun mic which I boom for interviews straight into this camera. Would the audio be good enough or would you need an external recorder? Thanks in advance, Sparky
