  • From DON'T PLAY US CHEAP! (1973)
Written & Directed by MELVIN VAN PEEBLES
Film version of his Broadway musical. A pair of devil-bats take human form and crash a Harlem house party in an attempt to break it up. But somehow, their attempts to ruin the party fail.
Joshie Jo Armstead gives an awesome performance. She used to be an Ikette & sang on their classic hit "I'm Blue (the gong gong song)"

I saw this show on Broadway several times back in 1972. When Joshie Jo Armstead took center stage and belted this song out, she stopped the show each time I saw it!

Thank you for posting this: Joshie Jo Armstead is my cousin on my late grandfather's side. I remember her singing this song when I was a little girl. She also co-wrote with Ashford and Simpson, and was a pretty good piano player :). She was always so full of life!

No she wasn't. The three of them wrote songs together. They were originally Ashford-Simpson-Armstead. And Jo Armstead went on to write and sing many great songs on her own.
