Sort of a landlocked "Mutiny on the Bounty," but well written, acted and directed.

The description is worse than inaccurate; it lies. This is a good movie, but not the one I thought I was going to watch. If I'd payed to watch it, in spite of how much I liked it, I'd demand my money back.

You don't like 'Chick Kelly, the Vitagraph Boy'? Learned his trade in silent movies. Known for playing the tough guy. And this movie was made after his serving time for killing his first wife's then husband.
Pretty stupid plot
Except that it happened more than once. You can go back to the Mutiny of the crew of the HMSS Bounty. That story made it to film three times. The last time, it won Academy Awards. In previous centuries up to and through WWI, service was harsh, and sometimes sadists got into positions of power, with the firing squad actively used for violations such as AWOL. By WW2, the Military Codes had reformed to a degree. However, sometimes, sadists did get into places of power. My father went AWOL during WW2 while his ship was laid in at San Diego. He was in the brig for six months. While there, a guard boxed his years, which left him deaf on one side. However, his TOD was extended six months and he was honorably discharged in 1948. He had joined in 1939. Lower down on this the right in the list of films to watch is "Damn the Defiant." It is about the general mutiny in the British Navy of which The Bounty was part. The near service-wide mutiny led to reforms in the service.

The fact that it is so cheaply made and obscure with no name actors is the reason nobody
on these boards has been able to identify it. It may never have been released in
the first place, but was later sold as filler to TV.
