In order to get this ending you will need to keep Astarion as a spawn and then lose the duel with Orin.
Correction: Astarion's outcome doesn't affect the answer you get from him. He could be a spawn or an ascendant (or even if you haven't finished his questline) and he will give you this piece of dialogue.
There are many endings you can have with your romance interest but how about one where you never get to say anything to them? No plans together, not even able to break up, get angry, be happy, nothing. Just lose each other forever?
I hated this ending. Yes I sacrificed Gale to move along faster and I hated that too. Yes I cried for sacrificing pixel wizard man, sue me.
I hated that the last thing I saw of Astarion was him running away from the sun. No closure whatsoever, no romance ending scene.
You do get to see Karlach's ending in the end. You can still go with her, or see her die if you chose to kill yourself. - Hry

I mean, there's not much point explaining why a person shouldn't kill themselves when they're currently in the process of disembowelment.
This hurts so much more when you find out Astarion's just hiding behind those crates. He's still THERE but he can't do anything.

The worst one is if you take one for the team and become a mind flayer and then do the right thing and *remove yourself* at the end and he shouts "no, wait!" as you turn that knife on yourself 😭😭😭

Killing yourself is always one of the worst possible outcomes. It always feels "too soon" and without closure. I agree.

when the realization hit me...and you know what? Even though he is a spawn, I killed the other spawn because I couldn't fathom releasing 7000 hungry vampires into the world...he is truly alone 😭

I do like the option to kill yourself as durge. Taking power and autonomy back while you can, a last act of defiance. Even if it's not the happiest of endings... I do wish these endings had more of a reaction from companions. Astarion running away and only Halsin commenting? Not even Tav? Everyone just standing there like "ok. moving on"
Ascended Astarion does comment since he's there and doesn't have to run away from the sun. Not much though
The 'killing yourself so [Evil Force] can't" is always a really bittersweet option at best, but I like that it's there too. Durge died how they wanted
I mean, I would like it a lot more if there was actually other options, if they didn't go out of their way to punish not rejecting Bhaal the first time. If the set up didn't make it pretty much impossible to get the 'not good ' endings for your companions where you can actually SEE what happens with them (unless you break anything that makes sense from an RP perspective and have Durge support everyone's 'dark' ambitions to just abandon his own). It's bad enough it's not set up to do smart evil runs, and that Durge, the mastermind of the absolute scheme can't see a more complex answer to the question of appeasing Bhaal.
I made the mistake of starting a Durge run before finishing any of the Tav runs I had going... now it just seems like a chore to have to go back to basic Tav JUST to be able to get these endings and still get to actually play a role playing game the way it should be played. Since we can't even look forward to having Durge as a companion, it just feels hollow, and like I'll be forced to play a game I don't want to.
Honestly all Astarion romance endings are bittersweet
Fiz uma fanfic por causa disso. Escolhi tudo bom, não me entreguei a Baal, ele não acendeu, prometi a ele buscarmos uma cura para o sol. Mas no fim, Tav acabaria morrendo algum dia, pois convencê-lo a não acender deixaria que ele tivesse uma eternidade sozinho, pois ele não poderia fazê-la igualmente imortal. Tudo o que poderiam fazer era aproveitar a companhia um do outro que, caso ele vivesse muito, seria uma pequena lembrança na sua eternidade.
The suicidal sacrifice is less tragic than the losing yourself to the Urge completely, IMO. One is at least a final act of defiance in the face of the inevitable. The other is a total loss of self, identity, and free will. Astarion would at least respect and understand the former even as he grieved terribly.
i got this ending today and i feel so empty and upset. after what astarion said to you after losing the duel i expected there to be some kind of tragic bittersweet goodbye between them but they didn't get any type of closure at all wtf. also it makes no sense that my character wouldn't run after astarion after he nearly burned alive in front of him. they should've been scared/worried??? the epilogues really need an overhaul oof :(
this is so true. it just doesnt make sense to see your most beloved one almost desintegrate in the sun and not say a thing
Act 3 is an unfinished mess and a blackhole for companion interactions. Act 3 lacks a lot of companion content for such a large act with such huge story endings that deserve better reactions and interim scenes.
Hopefully they fix it in the next patch. As well as the new Ascended Astarion kisses where Tav look scared/ disgraced/ disgusted during.
I don't know, taking control of the Netherbrain is kind of worse for me. At least in this case Astarion gets to cherish the memories while living his life relatively free. I took the netherbrain in my evil durge play through and dominated the mind of my entire party to be my servants. Probably the worst outcome for him considering his past. I had been hoping for an evil power couple but... you reap what you sow.
This is considered the bad ending for sure, for everyone (except you probably if you have followed the evil path). The difference is that for me this ending made me feel so powerless and emotional. The ending where you control the brain is bad but it didn't create those sad feelings this one did. It probably has to do with the fact you don't actually get to see the consequences since the game ends there. You don't see it in this short version but I have the longer one where I sacrifice Gale and it's also one of the things that got to me really badly!
The netherbrain ending actually hurt me way worse. The idea that he trusted and loved you the entire time- him begging you to take the brain right until the end- only to commit him to an eternity as a thrall again after Fel PROMISED he would be spared had me ready to puke. No romance, no ending, just that despondent clapping? Nightmares.
@@LumaFuwari for sure that's bad. I had a weird thing in my good durge playthrough. I kept Astarion as a spawn and I denied bhaal. I was obviously going for the hero ending but then when we reach the brain, Astarion tells me "I know what you're thinking. Do it" and I thought I might indulge just to see what happens before I reload again. The moment I stab the flayer (which was orpheus for me) Astarion yells "what are you doing?" and then ofc I take control and everyone is a thrall. Was this a bug or something? Why did Astarion say do it and then immediately regretted it?
@@WitchHekate I have no idea, on my playthrough I had no options at the end BUT to take it. My Astarion screamed something along the lines of "Do it my love, everything can be ours!" And then I got the freaky clapclaps

sorry :( if it makes you feel any better I was also crying like a weeping child lol. This is actually so much worse if you think about it. I hadn't realized it at that point but I actually killed all the spawn because I didnt want to release 7000 vampires into the world. Astarion runs away in the end, he doesn't know what happens to you, he's not there in your last moments before you lose yourself or kill yourself. And I killed all the spawn!! He's alone out there!! Damn don't make the same choices as me.
My heart is now broken.

Holy crap I didn’t even know this was possible I assumed that it would be an automatic game over for losing the Orin battle
Anyone that complains "This ending is so unsatisfying", that's the point. It's supposed to motivate you to go back and fix your mistakes to avoid this outcome, or start over. You didn't just not reject your father, you lost the Orin fight so handedly that your companions had to come save you. That's his blood in you and he's disgusted that you became such a weak Bhaalspawn and spent the whole time (I assume) defying him like "I can overcome the Urge."
And because of moving parts, Astarion doesn't have long enough to hang around before he needs to dip, so you can just leave or kill yourself and he's left to hear about this from the surviving companions - never mind that you sacrificed Gale to do it (which I didn't even realize was an option).

It's a difference in DMing philosophy.
Do you punish your players for being evil, or do you let them achieve their evil goals in the end because they are your main characters and the game is about them?
Neither are wrong, they are just different. Players are allowed to be unsatisfied with being punished for being evil in a game. Often in DND, at the table, we dole out player consequences, but we don't punish players, and we try to let them "win" - whatever that means to them.

BG3, although basically a D&D module in video game format, is a video game. It can be replayed, saves loaded, etc. Unlike a real D&D game with other people and a human DM, you can do-over hours of content if you messed up or explore all the outcomes of big game changing decisions. If anything, the game seems to expect you to sometimes. Because BG3 is a video game, this ending is intensely unsatisfying. It wants you to try again and see the better endings it has ready for you.

Oh god I just thought of something even more heartbreaking… Astarion couldn’t have gotten that far from where you were when you decided to end your own life. He knows what your blood smells like too. He probably knew something terrible had happened to you in that moment but he couldn’t turn back because of the sun setting him ablaze. That thought to me is just heartbreaking, almost stomach churning.
Picture this:
He finds a dark corner to hide in, his back hits the wall, as he lets out a wail in grief and pain over everything that just happened, then he starts sobbing on the ground. Come nightfall, he learns the truth of your demise. He lashes out in anger towards you, guilt ridden for not being able to save you, regretting not at least saying goodbye. He journeys to the oceanside forest where you first met, taking a seat on a log, numbness in those red eyes. He looks back on his life as far back as he can recall, then recounting every memory he has of you, the good and the bad. The sun begins to rise, the heat sets his pearlescent skin aflame, but he can’t bring himself to mind the physical pain. He feels as though he is being cleansed in a holy light. As he ignites, he peers down at his hands. The same ones you once held in loving compassion. He feels not the flames upon them, but the warmth of your skin in his grasp. His arms wrap around his own body, for he knows that once he goes, he can be in your comforting embrace once more. As he begins to drift away in gentle cinders flowing in the wind, he swears he can feel his heart beat just one single time… then he’s gone. No trace left of him, aside from the blackened scorched markings on the fallen tree he had rested upon moments ago.

my logic was that they didn’t ask for that life, they would likely go on to kill innocents, they have suffered enough already, the kids probably wouldn’t be welcomed back with the hunters anyway, and my biggest reason was because at least some of them would certainly try and take revenge on Astarion for basically trafficking them even though it wasn’t his choice.

There's one I think is more tragic. DJ Shart. Karlach goes to avernus along with wyll. Astarion runs away because sun gives him the ouchie booboos. Gale is the bomb literally, and Lae'zell runs off to free her people. You and her are alone. And you kill yourself in front of her. She is alone.
Personally, I like that in the moment she sees you are dead, that Dame's last words to her before Shart killed her rings clear in her mind. About going down the pathto become a Dark Justicier will find her abandoned and alone.

This was the worst to my experience ofc but I'm sure others have had worse endings than this one. In this video I only showed the romance ending but I did sacrifice Gale and that made it even worse for me. I absolutely hated sacrificing Gale and I don't want to do this ever again!
@@WitchHekate for an Astarion romance, yes. This is perhaps one of the most tragic ones. I find the Shadowheart romance with her being a Dark Justicier because she literally is alone. Everyone left her. Even the MC.

They are working in it! There was news about their commitment to improving act 3 just recently. They said for starters there's a bunch of stuff that is bugged, some of which leading to lost content that never initiates at all, and then there's content they had scrapped that they are going to finish and put in after all based on player feedback, and they generally agree some of the endings need a bit more work to give the closure the characters deserve. So go participate in discussions, cuz this is a rare studio that actually gives a shit about the fans and about their game as a work of art unto itself.
I had a 15-minute video ending and I was really satisfied. I promised non-ascended Astarion we'd find a solution to the sun issue together, and he was happy to start a new adventure. We saved Baldur's Gate, Karlach went with Wyll in the Avernus to kill them all, the emperor died in the final battle, and I killed Orpheus as he asked and gave him a glorious hero death. Lae'zel fled on the red dragon, Gale planned to create another crown for Mystra. Good Shadowheart saved her parents (it was worth a little pain on her hands). The best ending for me 😊 (the one I wanted at least).
@@Lastregona. yes this was my second playthrough basically which I found the best, except I didn't kill Orpheus, just let him and Laezel go back to Astral. I should have killed him though now that I'm thinking it.

this is the best ending for evil durge tbh, bette thqn killing everyone at the epilogue party. I did this with ascended astarion and he shouted "NO, WAIT" 😅
in my first dark urge run i was actually romancing vampire ascended astarion and i also didnt got a ending with him the romance was 100 so lol. instead i got the karlach ending... and nothing else after... idk it feels like when we go with bhaal and dont resist there is no romance ending like a conversation. i try right now to resist in a other dark urge playthrough

I think Durge might just be bugged to hell. It would be worth joining the forum to discuss, because the devs are trying to fix and flesh out Act 3 and the closing scenes based off customer feedback.
Yeah I just finished an evil durge run romancing ascended astarion and there were no ending cutscenes. Just me sitting on the throne with everyone else mind controlled and then roll credits
Ok yes apparently the only way to get an ending with your RI as durge is to deny bhaal in his temple. Anything else and you end up alone. My butler tricked me! He said I could spare my partner 😭 think of all the unborn bhaal babies!

I was like, man, are they really going to go through that end game battle for that terrible ending, and then I saw the part about sacrificing Gale and it made me chuckle. Good choice! If you're gonna go down like that, may as well take Gale with you! 😂
I only did it cause I've played that battle so many times I had to take the shortcut. Honestly it made it even worse though. Looking at Gale sacrificing himself because I was too lazy made me weep like a child lol

@@WitchHekatehonestly gale and I have a very... complicated relationship I hate him he irritates me cuz I have no desire or attraction for someone that won't stop drooling and talking about their ex 😂😂😂 but I would never purposely kill him or hurt him I can't even bring myself to chop off his hand when playing durge I either leave him in the portal or take him out and leave him there 😂😂

@@WitchHekate That same thing happened to me, lol. I dumped Gale for Astarion twice, and his reaction was so heartbreaking. When you ask "So you don't hate me?" He says something like "I could sooner hate breathing air" and it just killed me both times. So I finally was strong and dumped Astarion for Gale the 3rd time, and Astarion's reaction is hilarious. He basically says he isn't bothered, but will still always get to picture what he did with you... Such a jerk, but I love it. No regrets.

This happens if you lose to Orin; if you don't give in to your urge and beat Orin, you get the option to basically say 'Fuck you' to Bhaal. For this he takes his 'gift' away, wich kills you on the spot; but withers is there to revive you, free of your urge and Bhaal

Armour of agility. You can get it in Act 3 by buying it from a merchant called Gloomy Fentonson in Stormshore Armoury - it's close to the Lower City Central Wall waypoint.

I'm curious because my dialogue was bhaal praising my durge before blessing me. I had no choice to be evil or good, I was simply chosen and that was that. In my case half of my team mates got pretty hyped for me. Gale and shadowheart were a little nervous but were happy to no longer be the only two chosen but that was about it. Minthara and Astarion were very happy talking about dominating the world together and Papa blessing our evil plot. My Lae'zel was sacrificed for the Slayer so not sure what she would have thought. Basically I didn't let any of my team mates make good choices in my run. We were all murder hobos. I didn't even have the option to try and dissuade Shadowheart nor Astarion in their arcs from being bad, they just automatically went ahead with murdering their parents for power and sacrificing 7,000 souls for ascension.

It's weird you didn't get the option to choose if you want to embrace bhaal or not. From my experience you always have the choice. I have a playthrough where I went full evil durge, killed anyone I had to and my companions also made all the bad choice and I still had the option to deny bhaal, convince Astarion to not ascend and I even had to convince shadowheart and laezel to make the bad choices cause those 2 make the right choice by default if you don't intervene. The DC die is really high to convince them to kill nightsong and bow to Vlaakith.
In this specific video, Astarion is spawn so I had already dealt with Cazador and convinced him to not ascend. It doesn't matter though, even if you go there before you deal with Cazador, or if he has ascended, you still get the same response from him in this particular scenario.
The scenario is: just lose the battle with Orin, let her kill you. That's all.

Also if you accept bhaal fully and become his chosen, you can only take the crown for yourself in the end. If you try to be a hero and save everyone, you get this ending in the video.
Basically as chosen of bhaal you have no option to get the ending romance sequence with your RI. Except Karlach, you can see her ending (if she's even alive).
@@WitchHekate I was talking to a friend the other day about this issue, because I was pretty surprised to see you had choices I didn't. I ended up streaming my game with them and well turns out my issue isn't related to going full evil durge at all. For some reason some of my dialogue choices just didn't show up and I would get just a "continue" button. Apparently it's a dialogue bug if you skip through the audio too much, so I must have just been rushing and it was just selecting whatever came first. Because oddly enough, although I didn't see the dialogue box choices, I would end up in the dice roll screen and see up above what had been selected. I assumed this was intended, and it certainly is not lol. Going back in my saves proved this because reloading did give me the dialogue options this time.
So all of what youre saying makes sense now. And I was able to go back and see some missed dialogue that also now lines up with part of yours. (I'm guessing because I'm hard of hearing and have adhd that... when I'm rushing during dialogue, I'm missing important things and not noticing because I either didn't hear the audio well enough or I'm just distracted and not paying well enough attention, along with when you rush too much the game itself can get a bit confused.)
Luckily I know most of the evil choices already and how choosing bhaal forces you to enslave the brain, I'm still doing what I intended on doing thankfully. When I eventually do my durge redemption play through, I'm definitely going to take some of the more important scenes a lot slower this time around lol.
I do appreciate you replying though! I'm used to other games giving you a game over anytime you die, so I never even knew you could die to Orin and it be a valid choice in game. Very useful information, and this video ended up being way more insightful than I realized lol.

Yes the "continue" thing is a known bug, or maybe it's intended to be that way in order to avoid bugged dialogue. If you see it again I'd suggest saving and reloading to get all the dialogue options otherwise you miss some stuff for sure since it only picks the first dialogue option.
Death is actually rarely a game over. Unless you get a whole party wipe or you pissed off someone who has godlike powers, it's unlikely that would be the end of your game. Sometimes you might just get a different ending if you choose the "obviously bad" option - like with Gale or Emperor.

@@DikobrazFilth the only way to get a good ending as durge is if you beat Orin and then deny Bhaal so you're freed of your bloodline. Then yes, you can get the hero ending and live happily ever after with your sweetheart.
If you lose to Orin, or accept to be Bhaal's chosen, you only get bad endings.
The butler has a sweeter dialogue for you than Astarion does. Act 3 really is botched companion-wise.

No, this is just one of the bad ones. You can have happy endings
What a bad ending, and Gale is dead too :( you detonated him just to make it more dramatic didn't you? Is Karlach dead too? :P
I sacrificed Gale because I've played this so many times that I decided to take the short way out. Karlach is dead in one of my choices, I've made multiple to get different answers and cutscenes
